Byron Scott to Play Russian Roulette

Posted: 30 Jun 2010 08:55 PM PDT

Byron Scott is a brave man. The former coach of the New Jersey Nets and the New Orleans Hornets will reportedly be named the new coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers — even though he has no idea whether or not LeBron James will be on his team.

It’s the ultimate leap of faith for an NBA coach. If LeBron returns, Scott has perhaps the best job in basketball and a legit chance at a championship year in and year out. But if Lebron doesn’t return — and that’s looking more and more likely — Scott will be coaching a team that will have to endure perhaps the most difficult rebuilding job in NBA history.

In the latter scenario, Scott’s job would undoubtedly be the worst in the entire league. It would take Cleveland fans years to recover from losing LeBron. The rebuilding process would take years. In fact, some experts wonder if the Cavs could ever recover from the loss of their global superstar.

Making it an even riskier move for Scott is the unknown status of Phil Jackson. If the Los Angeles Lakers coach were to retire, Scott would have been a leading candidate for that prestigious job.

Hopefully things work out for you, Byron. Good luck with that pull of the trigger.

What is Richard Jefferson Smoking?

Posted: 30 Jun 2010 08:54 PM PDT

Remember RJ, it’s puff, puff, pass. Otherwise you’ll do things like you did Wednesday night when you decided to opt out of your contract that would have paid you more than $15 million next season.

What were you thinking, Richard Jefferson? (Image: TSN.ca)

Fifteen million dollars. For Richard Jefferson. Yes, the same Richard Jefferson who averaged nine points per game in the NBA playoffs last year for the San Antonio Spurs.

To the shock of the NBA world, Jefferson has decided to pass on his millions and instead become an NBA free agent. A number of teams are circling the free agent waters hoping to strike and land a LeBron James, a Dwyane Wade or a Chris Bosh. Those teams won’t be confusing LeBron James and Richard Jefferson any time soon.

Seriously, what is Richard Jefferson thinking? There’s no way he makes more than the $15 million that was owed to him.

Perhaps he really wants a long-term deal. Perhaps he desperately wanted out of San Antonio. Perhaps he is doing the Spurs a favor.

Perhaps he forgot to pass.

Roger Clemens Silences Son

Posted: 30 Jun 2010 08:25 PM PDT

Either Roger Clemens still has a good arm or his son isn’t much of a baseball player. Koby Clemens had his dad pitch to him in the Texas League Home Run Derby — and proceeded to go homer-less. Not exactly the greatest father-son day at the office.

During minor league action, Koby actually is pretty good. He’s second in the Texas League in home runs and RBIs. The 23-year-old has a good chance of eventually being called up to the big leagues. But apparently he doesn’t face anyone as good as his long-retired father.

As for the Rocket himself, this was a rare venture into the public spotlight after he was caught up in the controversy of steroids. With a tarnished legacy, it’s likely we’ll never see Roger in the same light again. Once a hero, he’s now looked upon as one of the leaders of the Steroid Era.

Then again, with as well as he did against his son, perhaps Roger Clemens decides to unretire and return to the mound. This time with weekly drug tests for steroids.

Hey, he’s the same age as Jamie Moyer.
