Travis Wood Almost Throws Perfect Game

Posted: 10 Jul 2010 08:55 PM PDT

A player I’ve never heard of, Travis Wood of the Cincinnati Reds, almost threw a perfect game on Saturday against the Philadelphia Phillies. Wood lost the perfect game to begin the ninth inning. Not only that, the Red eventually lost the game 1-0 in 11 innings.

But first of all, what is with pitchers this season? There have already been two official perfect games this season — and a third perfect game by Armando Galarraga that was stolen from him by an umpire. To put this cluster of perfect games into perfection, the last time two pitchers had a perfect game in the same season? 130 years ago.

As for Wood, this was his third career start. The 23-year-old was drafted in the second round of the 2005 draft. He has yet to register either a win or loss in his three starts. It would have been an amazing feat if his first win was a perfect game.

Said Wood: “I tried not to think about it too much. I just tried to go after one hitter at a time and not think about it.”

Hopefully Wood soaked it in because this is the closest he’ll ever come to a perfect game.

Lon Babby to Run the Suns?

Posted: 10 Jul 2010 08:53 PM PDT

The Phoenix Suns are a mess right now. General manager Steve Kerr left to team for a television gig allegedly because owner Robert Sarver was being cheap. Amare Stoudemire, arguably the best player on the team, left Phoenix to sign with the Knicks because the Suns didn’t offer him a max contract. To top it off, Sarver is now looking to hire Lon Babby to run the Suns.

Babby is the pay-by-the-hour agent who represents players like Tim Duncan, Grant Hill, Shane Battier and Ray Allen. Though respected around the league, how does Babby qualify to run an NBA team? Simply because he reads NBA contracts for a living? Is Sarver so frugal that he’s looking for a new general manager he can pay by the hour?

It’s a shame that the Suns are plummeting so fast. In the 2010 NBA playoffs, they made an unexpected run to the Western Conference Finals. Now, with Kerr and Stoudemire gone, making the playoffs at all will once again be a challenge.

And no, an agent moonlighting as a GM won’t help matters.
