Best Starting Pitchers in Baseball

Posted: 22 Jul 2010 08:40 PM PDT

At this time of the year, every baseball team is trying to figure out how to add another stud arm to their rotation. Whether it’s the Yankees looking to buy a star pitcher or the Royals trading for minor league prospects, great pitchers are a cherished commodity. Here’s a look at the top five best starting pitchers in baseball in the 2010 season:

5) Roy Halladay, Philadelphia Phillies
The Phillies acquired Roy Halladay in the offseason to be the ace of their staff. He has delivered. Now if only the Phillies can starter hitting again …

4) Ubaldo Jimenez, Colorado Rockies
Even though he has cooled off lately, Ubaldo Jiminez has the best record in baseball at 15-1. When he’s hot, he’s extremely hot.

3) Cliff Lee, Texas Rangers
The Rangers gave up a lot to get Cliff Lee — and he’s well worth the price tag. Over the last few years, there hasn’t been a pitcher as consistently great as Lee.

2) Adam Wainwright, St. Louis Cardinals
The Cardinals have a dominating pitching staff. Adam Wainwright is the best of their best. He’s the master of controlling a game.

1) Josh Johnson, Florida Marlins
If you haven’t been following baseball closely, you’re surprised by the top dog on this list. But with an ERA of 1.61 and a WHIP of 0.97, Josh Johnson is clearly the best starting pitcher in baseball.

Michael Beasley Stopped Smoking Weed

Posted: 22 Jul 2010 08:35 PM PDT

When Michael Beasley was drafted as the second overall pick of the 2008 NBA Draft, he had appeared destined for stardom. In college, Beasley had jaw-dropping stats and a body that was built for the professional level. Unfortunately, Beasley’s lack of maturity and constant smoking of weed kept him from reaching his potential with the Miami Heat.

This offseason, while the Heat were dumping contracts to attract LeBron James and Chris Bosh to town, Beasley was sent to the Minnesota Timberwolves. In Minnesota, general manager David Kahn insists there will be one big difference with Beasley: he has stopped smoking weed.

Honestly, if you’ve watched Beasley play the last two seasons, you can easily imagine him getting high before each game. He didn’t run much, he moved in slow motion with the ball, he lost focus easily and the munchies appeared to do a number on his body.

If Beasley has stopped smoking weed, at least during the NBA season, he may reach his potential. Or, perhaps, weed was the key to his game and he’ll fall off the map.

Stay tuned.

Chris Paul Pulls a LeBron James

Posted: 22 Jul 2010 08:18 PM PDT

Apparently LeBron James is a trendsetter. LeBron gave up winning a championship on his own and decided to go to the Miami Heat to be Dwyane Wade’s sidekick. Now Chris Paul is doing the same thing.

According to reports, Paul doesn’t think the New Orleans Hornets are close enough to a championship. For that reason, the superstar point guard wants to be traded to a team he feels has a better chance. Teams that he’s interested in include the New York Knicks, Orlando Magic, Dallas Mavericks and Portland Trail Blazers.

Excuse me but since when did NBA superstars become cowards? Back in the day, superstars would try to improve their team with blood, sweat and tears. They looked at other superstars with hate. Beating those superstars was the ultimate.

Not anymore.

Today, superstars want to join with other superstars to make the road to a championship easier. Chris Paul, instead of wanting to a win a championship on his own, wants the help of players like Dwight Howard and Amare Stoudemire.

Hopefully this doesn’t become an epidemic in the NBA. Competitiveness should still mean something.
