The American Cancer Society recommends eating five or more servings of fruits and vegetables each day to help prevent cancer. Fruits and veggies contain important vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals, and antioxidants and are generally low in calories.  Image: istockphoto At the CDC website fruitsandveggiesmatter.gov, you can input your age, gender and activity level to find out exactly how many servings you need. Buying from local farmers markets is also essential for local communities. The 2007 U.S. Agricultural Census reports a 49% growth in sales from farms directly to consumers since 2002 — representing $1.2 billon that stayed in local communities. But at the same time, more than one million acres of farmland are developed each year – most around cities where there is greatest demand for local food. American Farmland Trust (AFT) has opened the voting to select "America's Favorite Farmers Markets" at www.farmland.org/vote. The on-line contest is a nation-wide challenge to see which four farmers markets across America can rally the most support from their customers. The goal is to promote the connection between fresh local food and the local farms and farmland that supply it. Voting is open until midnight on August 31, 2010. At the end of the contest, one small, medium, large, and a new category, boutique, farmers market will win the title of "America's Favorite Farmers Market" for 2010. | Posted: 31 May 2010 08:23 PM PDT The NBA Finals are set to begin on Thursday night as the Los Angeles Lakers and the Boston Celtics face off in Game 1. Many pundits wrote off the Celtics long ago for being too old. However, they beat LeBron and the Cavaliers in six games in the Conference semifinals, then took down Dwight Howard and the Orlando Magic to advance. | Blackhawks Take 2-0 Lead in Cup Finals Posted: 31 May 2010 08:11 PM PDT The Chicago Blackhawks defeated the Philadelphia Flyers 2-1 on Monday night to take a 2-0 series lead in the Stanley Cup finals. This game was a defensive battle, unlike the Blackhawks’ 6-5 win in Game 1. Chicago goalie Antti Niemi made 32 saves, including 14 in the third period.  Image: US Presswire The Blackhawks’ crowd really appreciated Niemi’s performance, chanting his name in unison. On offense, Chicago broke the scoreless tie late in the second period when Marian Hossa and Ben Eager scored 28 seconds apart. The Flyers got their sole from Simon Gagne during a power-play in the third period. Games 3 and 4 will be played in Philadelphia on Wednesday and Friday respectively.
