Lakers Strike First in NBA Finals

Posted: 03 Jun 2010 08:49 PM PDT

In 2008, the Boston Celtics began the NBA Finals with a win over the Los Angeles Lakers. This year, the tables have turned. Led by Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol, the Lakers won Game 1 by a final score of 102-89.

Leading by nine points at halftime, L.A. blew the game open in the third quarter. By the beginning of the fourth, the Lakers had a 20-point lead. The Celtics never were within striking distance again.

Kobe poured in 30 points to go along with seven rebounds and six assists, while Gasol totaled 23 points, 14 rebounds, three assists and three blocks.

The Celtics were led by Paul Pierce’s 24 points, however Pierce was kept quiet most of the game by the defense of Ron Artest. In fact, the Lakers didn’t allow any of the Celtics to get going.

Boston will look to bounce back in Game 2. To get in the win column, they’ll need better production from their stars. As for the Lakers, they will continue to be the favorites as long as Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol play like the two best players in the series.

John Wooden Dead at 99

Posted: 03 Jun 2010 08:24 PM PDT

Update, Friday, June 4, 2010: Coach John Wooden, who built one of the greatest sports dynasties of all time at UCLA, has died at 99. The university said Wooden died Friday night of natural causes at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center. Jim Wooden and Nancy Muehlhausen issued a statement shortly after their father died, saying, “He has been, and always will be, the guiding light for our family.

“The love, guidance and support he has given us will never be forgotten. Our peace of mind at this time is knowing that he has gone to be with our mother, whom he has continued to love and cherish.”

From June 3, 2010:

John Wooden, regarded by many as the greatest coach in basketball history, is reportedly in grave condition at UCLA Medical Center. The 99-year-old legend led UCLA to ten NCAA championships, seven of which were won consecutively.

The reason for Wooden’s hospitalization isn’t known but many media outlets are reporting that he is in his final days. The Hall of Famer was to turn 100 in October.

After having success in his two years coaching at Indiana State, Wooden signed a three-year contract to coach at UCLA in 1948. Although he successfully turned the program around right away, the championships weren’t immediate. However, from the 1963-64 season to the 1974-75 season, Wooden coached UCLA to ten national titles.

Following his tenth championship, Wooden retired as UCLA’s coach. Since his retirement in 1975, Wooden has remained a large figure in and around the game of basketball. He wrote a number of books and authored a number of memorable speeches. His simple yet powerful messages have inspired many.

Wooden will be remembered as the coach all other basketball coaches will be compared to, while also being remembered as a better person than he was a coach.

The Golden Girls, a sitcom that ran from 1985 to 1992, helped transform McClanahan from a career supporting actress to a household name. In 1987, her work as Blanche won her an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress.

While Rue McClanahan was best known for being Blanche Devereaux, that was far from her only gig as a actress. She was in dozens of television shows and movies and was also an award-winning stage performer.

McClanahan suffered a minor stroke earlier in the year while recovering from heart surgery. Those close to her say she fully recovered prior to this latest stroke.

You can find The Official Rue McClanahan Memorial Page on Facebook. In accordance with her wishes, Rue McClanahan will not have a funeral.
