2010 World Cup Rankings: Top 10 Teams

Posted: 09 Jun 2010 08:21 PM PDT

With the 2010 World Cup about to begin, here’s a look a ranking of the tournament’s top ten teams. While Brazil and Spain are definitely the two favorite, any team in the top ten of these rankings has the mettle to pull off a World Cup victory.

1. Brazil
Brazil seemingly always has a great team and this World Cup is no different. When it comes to athleticism and natural talent, Brazil has no equal.

2. Spain
In recent years, Spain has been practically unbeatable. In the world’s biggest soccer tournament can Spain continue their domination? We’ll see.

3. Argentina
Argentina is being overlooked and counted out for one reason: everyone doubt’s Maradona’s ability to coach. As far as talent is concerned, Argentina is stacked.

4. France
When it comes to being battle tested, France has a lot to point to. They’ve been through controversies and have thus far stood up strong. Don’t overlook France.

5. Netherlands
The Netherlands are definite contenders. They have a great coach and roster filled with players who can play. That said, goalkeeping is a question mark.

6. England
With Wayne Rooney playing out of his mind, England is a very dangerous squad. Rooney has shown the ability to win games virtually by himself. That will come in handy in the 2010 World Cup.

7. Italy
The Italians aren’t expected to make much noise — even though they are the defending champions. However, I think their experience will be a big factor in this tournament.

8. Germany
Germany has dealt with injuries and their roster isn’t very deep. The good news is they can put group a tough set of players who will scare any opponent.

9. United States
While lacking headlining talent, the United States still has a chance. Why? They have great chemistry. A win would be shocking … but it could happen.

10. Portugal
Cristiano Ronaldo being on Portugal gives this team a chance. If his teammates can continue their recent hot play, Portugal is a team to watch.

Blackhawks Win Stanley Cup in Overtime

Posted: 09 Jun 2010 08:21 PM PDT

It wasn’t easy but the Chicago Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup for the first time since 1961. The Blackhawks had a 3-2 in the third period but the Philadelphia Flyers came back to tie the contest and sent it into overtime. In overtime, Patrick Kane won it with a hard-to-see goal that needed replay to confirm.

Jonathan Toews, who was named the MVP of the Stanley Cup playoffs, wasn’t sure that it was a goal prior to the replay.

Said Toews: “I was just hoping to God it was just an actual goal.”

Kane, on the other hand, was much more confident.

Said Kane: “I knew it went in right away. What a feeling. I can’t believe it. We just won the Stanley Cup.”

By winning the Stanley Cup, the Blackhawks ended the longest drought in the NHL. For Blackhawks fans, the celebration and parade is sure to be extra sweet.

Nets, Avery Johnson Reach Verbal Agreement

Posted: 09 Jun 2010 07:39 PM PDT

Russian billionaire Mikhail Prokhorov has made his selection for the new coach of the New Jersey Nets — ESPN analyst and former Dallas Mavericks head coach Avery Johnson. Johnson has interviewed with both New Orleans and Dallas recently, but reached a verbal agreement with Nets owner Prokhorov on Wednesday to take over the head coaching duties of the team.  The deal is reportedly a three-year contract. Johnson confirmed an agreement has been made during an interview with Hannah Storm on ESPN Wednesday afternoon.

“We’re excited about it,” Johnson said. “We’ve come to a verbal agreement and hopefully the Nets will have an official announcement tomorrow. But, yes, I am headed to New Jersey.”

In more than three seasons with the Mavericks, Johnson compiled a regular-season record of 194-70.  In New Jersey, Johnson will be re-united with former Dallas point guard Devin Harris as well. Harris was traded to the Nets in early 2008 in a deal for Jason Kidd.

Many people thought Johnson was headed to Atlanta after three face-to-face meetings with the Hawks — most recently on Saturday when Atlanta GM Rick Sund came to Johnson’s house in Houston. Now with Johnson headed to New Jersey, the Hawks are expected to choose between Dallas Mavericks assistant Dwane Casey, holdover Hawks assistant Larry Drew and ESPN/ABC’s Mark Jackson.

Johnson will take over a team that finished the 2009-10 NBA campaign with a horrendous record of 12-70. New Jersey is expected to have enough salary cap space to sign two top tier free agents this summer. They also have the No. 3 overall pick in the 2010 NBA Draft, which takes place later this month.

Taco Bell Wants More $2 Bills

Posted: 09 Jun 2010 07:25 PM PDT

You don’t see many $2 bills these days…and Taco Bell wants to see more. That’s right — Taco Bell.

Taco Bell launched a national petition to the Federal Reserve to circulate more $2 bills to celebrate its all-new $2 Meal Deal. Consumers are encouraged to sign the petition on the "$2 Dollar Deal" tab at www.facebook.com/tacobell to show their love for the $2 bill — and Taco Bell.

The petition provides a tongue-in-cheek way for Taco Bell fans to support the two, proving $2 Meal Deals has created demand for the bill. By signing the petition, they also enter a sweepstakes to receive some cool/exclusive Taco Bell prizes. Taco Bell even had a full-page letter/ad to the Federal Reserve in today's USA Today.

The Fed prints all denominations according to demand and, let's face it, the $2 bill has just not been in demand recently. It hasn't even been printed since 2006. While older generations of Americans treat the $2 bill with reverence, giving them as gifts or keeping them for good luck, younger generations have yet to discover it.

Maestro Americana Cocktail

Get ready for 4th of July with red, white and blue cocktails. Maestro DOBEL, the world's first Diamond Tequila, has transformed the classic Banderita into a festive Independence Day-inspired cocktail.

Originally meaning "little flag", the Banderita is the national drink of Mexico, because it makes up the colors of the Mexican flag. Three shot glasses are filled, one with tequila, another with lime juice, and the last with tomato juice. This commemorative cocktail is then consumed by sipping from each shot glass successively.

Australian Miners Protest Tax Hike

Posted: 08 Jun 2010 08:55 PM PDT

The Prime Minister of Australia, Kevin Rudd, has talked about hitting mining companies with a 40% tax. On Wednesday, 2,000 Australian miners reacted to that news by holding a peaceful protest in a park in the city of Perth.

The protesting Australian miners had a number of slogans at their rally including “Super Tax, Super Stupid” and “Axe the tax”. The demonstration was put together by the Association of Mining and Exploration Companies.

Prime Minister Rudd proposed the tax hike as a way to raise money for a number of pressing needs in Australia, including retirement savings. The Australian government estimates that a 40% tax on mining companies would translate to nearly $10 billion per year.

Opponents of the tax say that the common workers would be the ones hit hardest. Additionally, opponents say that mining companies would be less likely to do business in Australia in the future with such a tax hanging over their heads.

Derek Fisher a Hero in Game 3 for Lakers

Posted: 08 Jun 2010 08:55 PM PDT

With the 2010 NBA Finals tied 1-1, Game 3 was viewed as a pivotal contest for both teams. When push came to shove, one man stood out above the rest — Derek Fisher. The wily veteran point guard for the Los Angeles Lakers scored 11 key points in the fourth quarter to lead L.A. to a 91-84 victory over the Boston Celtics.

For the game, Fisher had 16 points and three rebounds in 41 minutes of play. He was also impressive on the defensive, playing a big role in shutting down Ray Allen — who missed all 13 of his field goal attempts for the game.

Kobe Bryant had 29 points for the Lakers but hit just 10-of-29 shots from the floor. Pau Gasol also underperformed, finishing with 13 points and ten rebounds in 39 minutes of action. If it wasn’t for Fisher’s clutch play, the Lakers would have definitely lost Game 3.

As for the Celtics, this one was a tough one to swallow. On top of Allen’s horrid shooting, 2008 Finals MVP Paul Pierce was just 5-for-12 from the field and was slowed by foul trouble. In fact, the only player on Boston who played above expectations was Kevin Garnett, who had 25 points and six rebounds on 11-for-16 shooting from the floor.

Game 4 is a massive game for the Celtics. If they win, this is a series again. If the Lakers win, the 2010 NBA championship will be all but decided.

Lindsay Lohan: SCRAM Bracelet & Lingerie

Posted: 08 Jun 2010 08:22 PM PDT

I’m not sure a SCRAM bracelet was ever intended to accessorize lingerie – but Lindsay Lohan pulls it off. While brandished a bow and arrow during a photo shoot for acclaimed photographer Ellen Von Unweth in Malibu, Lindsay’s alcohol detection ankle bracelet was hiding under a pair of UGG boots.

Lohan is currently out on bail for misdemeanor charges stemming from two DUI arrests in 2007 and court-ordered to wear the bracelet.

At an MTV Music Awards party on Sunday night, the bracelet on her ankle sounded a silent alarm that was “alcohol related” and because of that violation, her  bail has been forfeited.

“The court finds that she was in violation of the conditions of bail. So her bail is forfeited,” Judge Marsha Revel said at an emergency hearing.

“Having just received the report, I am not in a position to speak to its accuracy or validity, however Ms. Lohan maintains that she has been in complete compliance with all of the terms of her probation and her bail,” Lohan’s laywer Shawn Chapman Holley told The NY Daily News.
