Ron Artest Video: Kobe Never Passes Me The Ball

Posted: 18 Jun 2010 08:55 PM PDT

With Ron Artest, you never know what he is going to say or do next. In his post-game interview after the Los Angeles Lakers won the championship, Ron Artest was simply classic. You can watch the ten minute video below to see exactly what I’m talking about.

Throughout the interview, Artest finds it difficult to keep his emotions in check. He talks about everything from not usually being able to perform in tight situations to how much he can’t wait to hit the club scene. Near the end of the video, Artest talks about how excited he was when Kobe Bryant passed him the ball late in the game because Kobe never passes him the ball.

While Artest has had a checkered past, it’s difficult not to feel good for his success. In Game 7, he scored 20 points to go along with five rebounds and five steals. Without his stellar play, Kobe and the Lakers likely would have lost to the Boston Celtics. But the Lakers got the job done and Kobe passed the ball to Artest.

For once.

Baseball Power Rankings - Top Ten Teams

Posted: 18 Jun 2010 08:50 PM PDT

With the NBA season finished, it’s time to actually start paying attention to baseball. If you haven’t been keeping track, here’s a look at our current baseball power rankings. These top ten teams have a few surprises but the rankings are mostly comprised of the usual suspects.

1. New York Yankees
The defending champs are at it again. The Yankees have a stacked lineup, very good pitching and good defense. In other words, the Yankees have no weakness and no reason not to repeat.

2. Tampa Bay Rays
The Rays were the story of 2008. Last year, they fell off … but they are back on top once again. Their record of 41-26 is tied with the Yankees for the best in baseball.

3. Atlanta Braves
While their pitchers have been good to start the season, the Braves have a number of hitters off to a slow start. Once those hitters heat up, Atlanta will be a scary squad.

4. Boston Red Sox
Boston got off to a slow start but they’ve seemed to have gotten everything ironed out. The bad news is they’ll have to scratch and claw to get into the playoffs due to the first two teams on this list.

5. New York Mets
Winners of eight straight games, are the Mets finally for real? It looks like it. They still have trouble winning on the road but the pieces to the puzzle are starting to align.

6. Texas Rangers
It’s difficult to believe in a fast start by the Rangers. Once the heat begins to sizzle, the Rangers usually fizzle. But you can’t deny the talent on this team.

7. Minnesota Twins
The Twins have built one of the most talented rosters in the major leagues. While they haven’t played too fantastic lately, they are a team that you can count on making the playoffs.

8. San Diego Padres
It’s tough to score runs on the Padres. They have a huge ballpark and very good pitching — particularly in the bullpen. If they can score enough runs, the Padres should keep on winning.

9. St. Louis Cardinals
St. Louis has all the parts to be an elite ballclub. Their pitching has been good so far but their hitting has surprisingly been quiet. That said, I expect this team to make a run up the power rankings in the coming weeks.

10. San Francisco Giants
The Giants are in the same boat as the Padres. The pitching is once again really good. The hitting? Not so much.

Lakers Win Set Tweets Per Second Record

Posted: 18 Jun 2010 05:56 PM PDT

Sports are making a real impact on Twitter traffic (and downtime) this month. Twitter revealed that it achieved a record 3,085 tweets per second on Thursday night as the Los Angeles Lakers beat the Boston Celtics in Game 7 to win the NBA Championship.

On average, Twitter receives about 750 tweets per second (65 million total tweets per day).

Basketball isn’t the only sport that has been popular on Twitter lately though. Twitter highlighted the most tweeted goals of the World Cup the past week:

Japan scores against Cameroon on June 14 in their 1-0 victory (2,940 TPS)

Brazil scores their first goal against North Korea in their 2-1 June 14 victory (2,928 TPS)

Mexico ties South Africa in their June 11 game (2,704 TPS)

We can likely look forward to more tweeting records as the World Cup goes on.

Should the Feds Have an Internet Kill Switch?

Posted: 18 Jun 2010 04:39 PM PDT

Should the federal government have the power to shut down the internet? Senator Joe Lieberman thinks so. Lieberman has proposed a bill that would give the government the power to seize or even shut down the Internet in emergency situations.

“The Internet can also be a dangerous place, with electronic pipelines that run directly into everything from our personal bank accounts to key infrastructure to government and industrial secrets,” Lieberman said. “Our economic security, national security and public safety are now all at risk from new kinds of enemies: cyberwarriors, cyberspies, cyberterrorists and cybercriminals.”

Under the bill (titled the Protecting Cyberspace as a National Asset Act — PCNAA) the federal government’s power to force private companies to comply would become broad.

The PCNAA also calls for the creation of a National Center for Cybersecurity and Communications within the Department of Homeland Security. The center would be able to require certain companies to share information with the government.

The whole thing sounds a little too vague (and too powerful).

What do you think? Leave a comment and let us know.
