Posted: 20 Jun 2010 08:28 PM PDT Graeme McDowell held off Gregory Havret to win the U.S. Open on Sunday. McDowell, from Northern Ireland, is the first European to capture the U.S. Open in 40 years. Not exactly a household name, McDowell wasn’t flustered when three big stars – Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Ernie Els – were lined up behind him on the leaderboard. But maybe surprisingly, it was Frenchman Havret, who is ranked No. 391 in the world, who was the biggest threat. McDowell made only one birdie in the final round and closed with a 3-over 74. His final round was the highest score by a U.S. Open champion since 1985. Havret finished the tournament one shot behind McDowell, shooting 72 in the final round. “When you have Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Ernie Els there, you’re not expecting Gregory Havret to be the guy you’ve got to fend off,” McDowell told the press. Dustin Johnson collapsed early in the day with a triple bogey on the second hole, losing his three-shot lead. On the next hole, he double bogey’d to make matters even worse for himself. In the video below, AP Golf Writer Doug Ferguson analyzes McDowell’s win. Post from: EveryJoe |
