Create Your Job Seekers’ Tool Kit

Posted: 04 May 2010 08:48 PM PDT

A well-crafted resume isn’t the only thing that you need to land your perfect job. Ford Myers, career coach, speaker and author of “Get the Job You Want, Even When No One’s Hiring” (John Wiley & Sons, 2009) says the resume is just one of many tools a job seeker should have in his or her “Job Seekers’ Tool Kit.”

To stand out from the crowd, Myers suggests the following 10 items every new college graduate should have:

  1. Accomplishment Stories. Write five or six compelling stories about school or work-related tasks that made you proud.
  2. Positioning Statement. Prepare and practice a “15-second commercial” about who you are, what you’ve done in the past (academically and professionally, if applicable, and the particular strengths you can contribute to an employer.
  3. Professional Biography. Write a one-page narrative of your career in the “third person” — as though someone else wrote it about you.
  4. Target Company List. Make a “wish list” of adjectives that would describe your ideal employer, such as size, location, industry, culture, environment, etc. Then research specific organizations that meet those criteria, and put them on a list of 35 to 50 “target companies.”
  5. Contact List. Compile a list of all the people you know personally and professionally. Remember that approximately 80% of new opportunities are secured through networking.
  6. Professional/Academic References. List colleagues or professors who would “sing your praises” if asked about you. Contact each of them, and get approval to use their names on your list of references.
  7. Letters of Recommendation. Request letters from four or five respected business colleagues or academic associates which will be printed on their professional letterhead.
  8. Networking Agenda. Write out a full networking discussion or script so you will know exactly how to manage the networking discussion — how it flows, what to expect, how to react to the other person’s comments, etc.
  9. Tracking System. Keep a detailed record of your job search activities, including phone calls, meeting notes and correspondence. This is essential to keeping your process organized and productive.
  10. Resume. It’s the last on the list, but still indispensable. And, it has to be GREAT. Be sure your final resume is carefully edited and succinct (no more than two pages) with a layout that is easy for the eye to follow.

Myers adds, “It may take some time to produce these documents and to learn how to use them effectively, but it will be worth it. Building a satisfying career is much easier when you have the right tools.”

$12 Cup Of Coffee

Posted: 04 May 2010 02:53 PM PDT

Your grandparents will probably tell you that they can remember when you could get a cup of Joe for a dime. Those days are long, long, long gone – Starbucks put an end to cheap coffee prices many moons ago. But how about a $12 cup of coffee? That’s outrageous.

Coffee beans

According to MYFOXNY.COM, Cafe Grumpy in New York charges up to $12 for a cup of high-end coffee. The ridiculous prices are blamed on the coffee quality and the fact that the shop roasts their own beans.

Their selection of coffees changes reguarly and one of the current choices (“Nekisse” from the Neji locality of Ethiopia) is described on their website as “Very clean, sweet, complex cup with tropical fruit notes of pineapple, kiwi and key lime. Floral notes of jasmine, lemongrass and rosemary.” Now that doesn’t sound like coffee at all.

Jessica Simpson Doesn’t Brush Her Teeth

Posted: 03 May 2010 08:45 PM PDT

On The Ellen DeGeneres Show last week, Jessica Simpson revealed that she only brushes her teeth about three times a week.

“My teeth are so white and I don’t like them to feel too slippery, but I do use Listerine and I do floss every day,” Jessica explained to Ellen. “But, I don’t brush them every day…My lips just slide all over the place…I can’t catch up with my mouth. I need a little coating.”

She also said that sometimes she uses her “shirt or something” to wipe her teeth off when they get nasty.

“I know it’s gross but I always have fresh breath,” she laughed. “It’s really weird but I have great breath.”

Between her Mom jeans and bad oral hygiene, it’s no wonder Tony Romo broke up with her.

Nash, Suns Top Spurs to Take Game 1

Ask a Phoenix Suns fan which team they hate the most and you’ll only get one answer: the San Antonio Spurs. You shouldn’t be surprised considering that the Spurs have eliminated the Suns four times since the 2003 playoffs.

On Monday, the Spurs and Suns played Game 1 of the 2010 Western Conference semifinals. Playing in Phoenix, the Suns needed a victory to hold onto homecourt advantage. In a rollercoaster of a game, the Suns were able to hang on just enough to post a 111-102 victory.

Steve Nash got the Suns off to a fast start by scoring 17 first quarter points. The future Hall of Fame point guard finished with 33 points and ten assists, while draining 13-of-19 shots from the field. Jason Richardson chipped in 27 points and six rebounds, while Amare Stoudemire totaled 23 points and 13 rebounds.

The Spurs were led by their Big Three of Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker. Duncan had 20 points and 11 rebounds, Ginobili led the way with 27 points, five assists and five rebounds, while Parker had 26 points off the bench. The four-time champion Spurs simply didn’t get enough production from their role players.

Game 2 is on Wednesday. The Suns will try to remain in the driver’s seat while the Spurs will look to take control of the series and begin the art of demoralizing the Suns and their fans once again.
