Iron Man 2 Tops Robin Hood at Box Office

Posted: 16 May 2010 08:54 PM PDT

Iron Man 2 was No. 1 at the box office for the second weekend in a row with about $53 million, while Ridley Scott’s expensive Robin Hood prequel opened to $37.1 million in ticket sales in North America.

Robin Hood, a Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment film, did well worldwide with a solid $111.1 million in global ticket sales over its first three days in theaters. Universal has had a streak of bomb movies and is hoping that Robin Hood will make some noise.

The romantic comedy Letters to Juliet, starring Amanda Seyfriend and Vanessa Redgrave, tallied $30 million — good enough for third for the weekend, while Queen Latifah’s Just Wright was fourth with $8.5 million.

Ronnie James Dio, born Ronald James Padavona, died on Sunday morning after a six-month battle with stomach cancer. He was 67. The rock vocalist and songwriter was widely considered one of the most powerful heavy metal singers and was credited for popularizing the “devil horns” hand gesture in metal culture.

Dio performed with the bands Elf, Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Heaven & Hell, and of course, his own band Dio.
