Playstation Network is Down

Posted: 28 Feb 2010 06:52 PM PST

You can breath a sigh of semi-relief and know that the Playstation Network is down for everyone…not just you.

That probably doesn’t make you feel a whole lot better but at least you can sleep soundly tonight since that person you pissed off last night during a game of COD4 had nothing to do with your issues.

Not these issues at least.

Playstation LifeStyle was the first place I saw this issue reported and now Mashable has picked it up so you know it’s pissed A LOT of people off.

The last tweet on Playstation’s official Twitter account addressed the issue with this:

We’re aware that many of you are having problems connecting to PSN, and yes, we’re looking into it. Stay tuned for updates.

That was two hours ago at the time of writing this.

SO, all I can tell you is to cool your jets and know that Playstation knows about it.

There. Feel better?

My suggestion?

Go read a book. This might take a while.

How to Remove the Security Tool Virus

Posted: 28 Feb 2010 05:58 PM PST

I had a bit of a challenging task recently serving as alpha-geek for my extended family. My mother-in-law had gotten the Security Tool virus on her machine and it was doing a great job of keeping her from doing anything productive to remove the offending malware.

security-tool-malware

The Security Tool malware virus presents itself as a very believable and helpful application. It uses quite a bit of social engineering to make the infected computer’s owner think they should be clicking on approval buttons and icons to let the software do more “help” on their computer.

What makes this even more challenging is that Security Tool actively denies just about any action you take to try and remove the offending application. You’ve really got to do a couple of different steps to make sure everything is removed and doesn’t come back to infect you later.

The best instructions I’ve found in quite some time to remove a virus, are the ones I found on the Bleeping Computer website (great site name by the way!). Step-by-step instructions, and even the suggestion of printing them out so you have them available through the different restarts that may be required. My only suggestion to you would be to read all the way through things first, download everything you need before you start so it’s available just like the printed instructions. Then get to it.

If you’re infected with the Security Tool virus malware and looking for ways to remove it, visit Bleeping Computer and follow their instructions. It worked perfectly for me.

Lewis Hamilton Best Time on Day Four

Posted: 28 Feb 2010 04:44 PM PST

The fourth day of testing on the track of Barcelona was a success for all who attended, but McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton had the fastest lap time of the day with a 1:20:472 second lap. Hamilton finally looked like he was able to get his McLaren race car up to speed and his smile was evident after the session, so he must have had a better day from his point of view. Hamilton finished about two-tenths of a second ahead of his nearest competitor on the day, Red Bull’s Mark Webber, who looked pretty fast and controlled out on the track. Webber worked on fine tuning the set up of the car all morning and actually went through a few mock qualifying laps to see how the car was reacting to the forces on the track. He was able to get in a total of about 70 laps, so the team and engineers will have lots of data to crunch before the next test session.

The F10 looked a lot better on day four at Barcelona

Webber and his Red Bull team mate Sebastian Vettel was out on the track in the morning for about 75 laps of pretty good work. He was able to finish with the fifth best lap time of the day, while getting lots of work done on different aspects of the car set up. This along with the data from the laps he ran should give the engineers lots of data to help them figure out how to get the car running its best for the next test session.

The third fastest lap time of the session belonged to Felipe Massa in his Ferrari, he was on the track for a total of about 110 laps in the F10 and he looked pretty nimble on the track. The Ferrari race car still needs lots of work but things are starting to look a lot better as the car begins to round into form. The 2010 season is probably going to be a difficult one for Ferrari, as it will for all of the four new teams, and the new team that does the best this year is going to have a definite leg up on the other three teams.

Force India’s Adrian Sutil had the fourth best lap time of the day, while working on the aerodynamics of the car, the brake system, running through qualifying simulations and other things that kept him busy and smiling all day. The car looks pretty fast and competitive out on the track and this is great news for Force India who will be looking to do even better than the pretty good showing they had in 2009. They need to keep improving the car and final standings at the end of the year to be considered a success in 2010 and this is going to be difficult.

Kevin Harvick is Ready to Race!

Posted: 28 Feb 2010 04:08 PM PST

The third race of the 2010 Sprint Cup Series has been run and Jimmy Johnson looks to be fast and strong once again, but things are still early and reading a lot into the results so far is going to be a mistake you’ll regret later on. The Sprint Cup Series is just getting started and some of the teams will be slower starters than others. Jimmy Johnson is known for being a strong starter and even stronger finisher, so things are looking good for him and his chances of a fifth consecutive Sprint Cup Series Championship. Johnson was back in form quickly at the start of the first race and after the third he’s looking even stronger. His competition has been a little slower to get up to speed, but expect the other racers to get him in their sights soon and start to reel him in.

Jimmie is looking fast and confident on the track again.

Kevin Harvick has had a slow start to the 2010 Sprint Cup Season and on Friday his start became a little more hectic and chaotic as he ran into the wall during Friday’s practice session and was just able to qualify in 34th place. On Saturday, Harvick’s weekend continued on its trend as he only managed to finish 25th out of 42 cars that were out on the track for two sessions. His difficulties are just part of the trade of racing in NASCAR, so don’t read to much into them just yet. Kevin will get things turned around soon and the team will get the car running fast and nimble before you know it Kevin will once again be near the top of the Sprint Cup Series standings and challenging for the lead.

Things change quickly week to week on the Sprint Cup Series tour and you have to keep informed on the events in order to have a good understanding of what’s going on. A racer can be on a roll one week and sitting in the pit lamenting a crash that has them sitting and wondering what could have been. This of course is the exciting part of NASCAR and the Sprint Cup Series that keeps us all coming back for more excitement and entertainment, week after week. Harvick will keep plugging away though, he’s not a quitter or one to give up, so he’ll be fighting to the last race and corner and this is why we love him so.

Harvick will be out on the track again next week, no matter the result in his last race and he’ll be giving it everything he has to win. This is the goal of every racer in NASCAR, to win as many races as possible, and win the championship at the end of the season.

Soulja Boy “Pretty Boy Swagg”

Posted: 28 Feb 2010 10:56 AM PST

A new music video from Soulja Boy has been released. The video is for the song called "Pretty Boy Swagg."

soulja boy

It looks like the track is off of his upcoming album, "The DeAndre Way." The album title refers to his real name which is DeAndre Cortez Way.

Honestly, listening to the song and looking at the video, it just seems like a big joke. Is he being serious?! Maybe, it's just me, but not only is the song stupid, but the video is so low quality.

I'm sure he's earned enough money off of "Crank That" to come out with something better.

Take a look at Soulja Boy's "Pretty Boy Swag" music video below:

“Last Rebellion” Out Now

Posted: 28 Feb 2010 08:00 AM PST

For those of you with that secret love of far away lands, creatures, and special powers, you may be drawn to Last Rebellion, where you'll play in the world of Junovald.

Last rebellion

The place is ruled by two very different gods by the names of Formival and Meitilia. As you probably guessed, one is good (Formival) and the other is evil (Meitilia).

Formival's focus is on the creation of life, while Meitilia seeks to destroy it. Meitilia has given power to two types of people: Blades and Sealers.

Blades have the ability to destruct one physically and Sealers have the power to destroy their soul. On a less depressing note, Formival can revive any dead being.

Also, souls of living things, may escape their body and may become taken over by the Formival's Soul. The souls then turn into monsters, called Belzeds, which are virtually indestructible unless they are in the face of both the Blade and Sealer.

Characters Nine Asfel and Aisha Romandine must defeat the Belzeds, which have taken over the kingdom.

Tomlinson Won’t Be a Packer, But He Should

Posted: 28 Feb 2010 04:34 AM PST

The Chargers let LaDainian Tomlinson go earlier this week, and since then rumors have swirled on where he would end up. I’d like the Packers to at least take a look at him, but I doubt that will happen. Ted Thompson is too cheap to play for someone like Tomlinson, even though he’d finally seal the uncertainty in the running back position.

More than hat, at 30 years old Tomlinson is much older than the guys Thompson likes to have on the team. He’s been pruning the team for years and getting rid of the experienced players. I don’t always agree that when a player gets older they lose their effectiveness. Just as Charles Woodson about that.

Still, Tomlinson said he would like to play for another team and that he wants to go to the Super Bowl. The Packers could do that with him.

Does the Shake Weight Really Work?

Posted: 28 Feb 2010 12:47 AM PST

It’s not often something in the fitness world makes news, but the unorthodox Shake Weight has women chirping about the possibility of toned triceps and laughing about the rest. The marketers behind the Shake Weight must be delirious with how much press their suggestive “exercise” has received.

Check out Ellen talking about the ShakeWeight:

So it’s received lots of press and everybody loves to laugh about it, but does the Shake Weight actually work? Numerous web reviews from actual owners say yes, you can feel that your triceps have been given a workout afterwords. I don’t own a ShakeWeight, but I’ll agree the motion that shows in the commercials is going to hit your triceps and shoulders. So yes, technically it works if you continually plug away at it as if you would a regular workout, but therein lies the marketing genius.

First, the shake weight isn’t going to burn anything above a scintilla of fat off your body. Thus, if you have flabby arms you might be able to get a little more muscle, but you still need to burn fat. Second, there’s a subliminal message that goes along with the Shake Weight that it will somehow help you lose weight or get in shape, when it will do nothing of the kind. Still, people will buy the ShakeWeight under these pretenses and then throw it in the back of the closet once a new fad hits the market. In the end, all the ShakeWeight does is basically give you 1 tricep exercise for $19.95 (postage and handling).

If you really want to do it, you could just buy a 2.5 lb dumbell and imitate the commercials. Or you could just go to the gym and do some tris and shoulders.

Think of the Shake Weight as 1 tiny car accessory in an auto parts store. Can it help you with an aspect of your car? Sure, but it matters less than 1% in the whole scheme of things. The Shake Weight is akin to replacement seat covers in comparison to regular cardio exercise being an engine.

2011 Ford F-Series Super Duty Leads Trucks

Posted: 27 Feb 2010 08:19 PM PST

The 2011 Ford F-Series Super Duty is delivering the goods by leading heavy-duty trucks in capability, horsepower and fuel economy.  It's got the top torque, is the best for towing and payload.   This truck really is a leader in the industry right now.

2011 Ford F-350 Super Duty

The all-new Super Duty is equipped with Ford-built diesel and gas powertrains.  The diesel engines account for 65% of sales while gas makes up the remaining 35%.  It features a new 6.7 liter Power Stroke V-8 turbocharged diesel delivers 390 horsepower and 735 ft.lb. of torque.  When you consider the fact that the torque is 75 ft.lb. more than its nearest competitor and the fuel economy improvement averages 18% better for pickups and 25% better for chassis cab, it almost seems like a no-brainer that the F-Series be included with the best in its class right now.

The Excitement is Building

Posted: 27 Feb 2010 05:23 PM PST

Can you feel the excitement that’s rising as we approach the beginning of the 2010 Formula One season? The energy is almost electric at times as we anticipate the beginning of a year on the Formula One track that will go down in history and we haven’t even dropped the flag on the first race. The return of Michael Schumacher, who was seen recently in Vancouver, he must be there to take in the Olympics, has energized the up coming year, along with the return of Lotus to Formula One after years on the sidelines. Racing fans and the racing industry as a whole are kind of holding their breath at the moment, wondering what the year holds, and thinking about all the fun that could ensue.

The T127 is going to be a little faster and more responsive than this Lotus

Earlier in the month we covered the first sighting of Virgin Racing’s new race car, the VR-01, and earlier this week we covered the first sightings of Red Bull’s RB6. Today we have great news, there has been sightings of the newest Lotus entry for 2010, the T127, and all reports indicate this car is something that has to be seen to be believed. A space age racing beast with the pedigree and engineering that makes for a winning combination on the track, race fans and Lotus fanatics are hoping the T127 is going to bring Lotus back to Formula One racing glory after years of absence. The T127 was released in the United Kingdom and this Cosworth powered monstrosity was turning heads and opening the eyes of everybody who viewed it.

Lotus fanatics and race fans also got a chance to see Jarno Trulli and Heikki Kovalainen, who will be behind the wheel of the latest Lotus Formula One car. They had big smiles on their races as they talked to the media and fans about the new car and they appeared to be chomping at the bit to get behind the wheel and see what the new car can do. They’ll get their chance soon, until they’ll have to wait and think about what could be.

The new Lotus Formula One car has been released only five months after it was announced Lotus would be returning to Formula One. Something tells me that plans for the new car have been in development longer than five months and the team could be a little more along in their preparation for Lotus’s return to Formula One, than we might think. Hopefully, this is true and Lotus is able to come out of the gate fast and put a little scare into the teams that are expecting to win this year.

Jeff Burton is Ready to Contend Again

Posted: 27 Feb 2010 05:15 PM PST

We heard rumours about talk of Jeff Burton’s demise last year during the Sprint Cup Series season after his less than normal year as a NASCAR racer. True, this gentlemen of racing is getting older and has started to visibly show the signs of his age, but he’s no where near finished as a NASCAR racer and could just be in a slow period and will soon emerge as strong as ever. The talk of Jeff Burton’s demise picked up speed in the summer and seemed to reach its peak after Burton failed to make the Chase for the first time since 2005. The rumours must have seemed to have some truth to them for Jeff Burton fans who have been following their racing hero since his days with Richard Childress Racing.

Jeff Burton finished behind Kyle Busch in the Stater Bros 300

Tomorrow Jeff Burton will compete in the Sprint Cup Series competition the Shelby American at Las Vegas Motor Speedway and despite his recent slow period on the track he’s been labelled as a championship contender by many. This might make some of his fans feel a little foolish when they compare this to his results in the Sprint Cup Series in 2009, but it would be a mistake considering Jeff Burton’s first two races of the 2010 Sprint Cup Series season. In the first two races Burton has looked fast and confident enough on the track to win and if things had been a little different he might have won both races.

This is certainly a different start to the 2010 Sprint Cup Series season than most people in NASCAR had envisioned for Jeff Burton considering the year he had in 2009. A nice surprise for all involved and especially Jeff Burton, who must have been having a few thoughts about his career in NASCAR after the 2009 he had on the track. Still, humans and racers are known for making comebacks that amaze us and Jeff Burton’s rise back into the contender picture of the Sprint Cup Series is a nice thing to see after last year.

Tomorrow we’ll get to see whether the first two races were a true indication of Jeff Burton’s recovery from a terrible year and if he’s going to continue to challenge race after race as we expect from such a talented racer.

Apple Apps of the Month

Posted: 27 Feb 2010 08:41 AM PST

I’m starting out a new thing this month. My Apple Apps of the Month post. I promise to at least try out one app for the iPhone/iPod Touch/(soon iPad) and Mac and just post it here to give my own personal takes on the apps. If they’re worth it or not.

This month I’m starting out with two games for iPhone/iPod Touch. I’ve been stressed out this month thus needed a way to unwind and look for something to take my mind off things. Games are the perfect way to do that. I’m not really a hard core gamer I like simple games but those that are challenging as well. Here are my picks for this month.

iPhone/iPod Touch

1. Flight Control (Price: $.99)

Flight Control Screen Cap courtesy of Fire Mint

Flight Control Screen Cap courtesy of Fire Mint

Easily one of the best games for the iPhone/iPod Touch that I’ve downloaded. Bang for buck it’s a winner. The objective is simple, to land as much planes and helicopters at an airport before you crash one to another. Simple as it sounds it’s quite hard. It’s a game that a broad audience will enjoy. From a child, a 30 something such as myself all the way to a near 60’s person such as my dad. It’s a game that’s simple, easy to understand, quite challenging and it’s not anchored on violence. Each game you play is different offering hours and hours of fun. For $.99 it’s a steal.

2. Plants vs. Zombies (Price: $2.99)

Plants vs. Zombies Screen capture

Plants vs. Zombies Screen cap courtesy of Popcap

The hit game from Popcap is now on the iPhone platform. It brings almost the same amount of enjoyment as the desktop version of the game sans some features such as mini games however, Popcap has done a fine job of porting it to the iPhone platform. It’s fun, quirky and a great time waster. The levels are challenging although I do wish that the adventure part was a bit longer. I finished it in a couple of days and was left wanting for more.

Overall it’s a good game at $2.99 it’s not a bargain but it’s also not that expensive. It’s still a great buy for the price.

Mac

1. Autograph ($6.95)

Autograph Screen cap courtesy of Ten One Design

Autograph Screen cap courtesy of Ten One Design

Autograph from Ten One Design is an application that transforms your multi-touch trackpad into a sort of graphic tablet but targeted to generating digital signatures. You essentially use the trackpad if you want to sign an electronic document. In some applications it automatically inserts your signature after you write it.

It’s $6.95 and is reasonably priced for its purpose. Although it does take a bit of getting used to. Up to now I’m still struggling to make a decent signature. However that doesn’t outweigh the fact that I do want to go paperless as much as possible. So if I can keep things electronically as much as possible then I’m all for it.

This also works with Wacom tablets if your Mac doesn’t have a multi-touch trackpads.

So there you go! Those are my app picks for this month. Till next month! Oh, let me know what you guys think.

Prediction: Favre Will Be Back

Posted: 27 Feb 2010 04:31 AM PST

I had my doubts on whether or not Brett Favre would be back for another round of hits this year. He ended the season with a game that had him on the ground more than he had been all year. But having reading that Brad Childress is giving him a lot of latitude with his decision, I think he will. One thing in particular caught my eye, and that was Childress’ admission that he’d “be willing to give Favre plenty of time to reach a decision and may even excuse him from offseason activities and possibly training camp.”

We know how badly Favre hates training camp, and let’s face it, it doesn’t really seem like he needs it. He played great, right up until the end. Childress seems to have a lot more respect for Favre than the management of the Packers did. He said that Favre, “earned that latitude” in regard to giving him time to decide and not forcing him to jump throw hoops. Twenty years in the NFL should do that. Hopefully Favre will make a decision he feels comfortable about now that he has the support he needs.

“Risen” On Xbox 360

Posted: 26 Feb 2010 10:04 PM PST

One of the newer games to be released on the Xbox 360 is Risen which came out on Tuesday. It's rare that a video game would pull off being sophisticated, yet interesting – but this game certainly pulls it off.Risen_cover

So, the whole story emerges from your character being shipwrecked on this ridiculously insane forbidden island. On the island, there are random ancient temples that just start popping up from the ground.

The island is filled with treasure, active volcanoes, and creepy monstrous beings. The ruler of the island is ruthless and extremely controlling.

There are tons of places to explore including beaches, volcanoes, mountains, swamps and all that goodness. The game has four chapters and you'll be able to decide which side you'll be on.

Each level will help you learn and improve your skills. It's available on the Xbox 360 and is available for play on Windows Vista.

Different Types of Push Ups

Posted: 26 Feb 2010 08:12 PM PST

Everyone knows about the standard push up, but what about the other types of push ups?  By adjusting your positioning on the push up, you can effectively work other body parts or different degrees within the normal muscle areas for the push up.

Diamond push ups are the same form as regulars but you will touch your thumb and index finger together.  Essentially, this boils down to your hands being in close which puts a ton of weight squarely on the triceps.  These are not only excellent tricep exercises, but also still effective in chest and shoulder workers.

Elevated push ups are just regular push ups but instead of your feet on floor level, you put them on a bench or another higher up place.  This adds difficulty to the push up by putting more pressure on the upper chest to deliver power.

Wide push ups have you space your hands further apart than normal.  This shortens the distance you have to lower yourself to the ground but puts a great deal of pressure on your arms to carry the load.

If you can’t complete a regular push up, modified push ups make things easier until you’re ready.  For a modified push up, you shorten your bridge by putting your knees on the ground.  This takes much of the weight off your chest and shoulders.

Kanye West “Coldest Winter” Music Video

Posted: 26 Feb 2010 06:12 PM PST

Kanye West has debuted the music video for his new single "Coldest Winter." The song is off of his 2008 album, "808's & Heartbreak." The music video was directed by Nabil Elderkin.

808s and heartbreak

Nabil said of the video, "It’s pretty minimalistic. It’s slow and very visual. I just wanted to catch the vibe of the song and not get too literal. Because the lyrics are very close to Kanye and go much deeper than the video goes, obviously hearing the song you know it’s very emotional."

The subject of the song is the pain felt of losing a loved one. The video definitely is simple as it shows the same setting throughout the video. It's actually a little bit eerie.

Tim Tebow’s Idol Connection

Posted: 26 Feb 2010 01:30 PM PST

Tim Tebow cannot stay out of the headlines these days. If he isn’t making Super Bowl commercials that have kept people guessing, or changing his throwing motion, he’s hanging out with (or dating?) American Idol contestants. Yardbarker’s Outside the Boxscore has a picture of Tebow and Idol contestant Janell Wheeler looking very cozy. Wheeler made it to Idol’s coveted Top 24, but then got the boot last night.

Outside the Boxscore says they are just pals, although he does have his arm wrapped around her pretty tightly. But pictures can be deceiving. One thing is sure, if Tebow’s publicity quotient doesn’t go down in the next week or so, I’m going to move him up to Brett Favre status in terms of players I don’t want to hear anymore about. Just saying.

Tim Tebow’s Throwing Motion Tweaked

Posted: 26 Feb 2010 01:27 PM PST

Tweaked is a lot different than overhauled. Tim Tebow knows the difference, especially now at this point in his career. Rumors have flown lately that Tebow had been trying to change his throwing motion. Many wondered why, at this point in his career, would he do this. After all, NFL drafts are right around the corner. Perhaps that’s why Tebow is stressing today that the changes are “tweaks” and nothing more.

USA Today points out that:

Tebow’s elongated motion and low release point are perceived as factors that could prevent him from succeeding in the NFL. Projections on his draft status fluctuate wildly among observers, some who project him in the first round, others having him go as low as the third.

There are some players that just get a lot of attention, and Tebow is one of them. He will be watched closely from now right up until the draft. The 2007 Heisman Trophy winner is sure to make headlines in the NFL, but will they be the Peyton Manning kind or the Jay Cutler kind?

You may have heard a lot of talk about the NBA and straws lately, especially since ESPN highlighted Caron Butler breaking open a straw and shoving it into his mouth before a game.

The straw-chewing habit has been a part of Butler’s basketball career for as long as he can remember. He loves chewing straws so much, that he has his wife stock up on bundles every time she hits up a fast-food restaurant.

Apparently, Butler chewed straws when he was with the Washington Wizards. But it didn’t become public knowledge until ESPN showed a highlight of Butler, and a couple of other Dallas Mavericks, chewing on straws during warm-ups before a recent game. I guess Butler’s new teammates wanted to see what it was like, so they embraced the habit as if to say, “Hey, you’re part of the team now. We’ll chew straws with you any day.”

Really? Straws? Am I the only one who thinks this is:  A. dangerous; B. unappealing; and C. the weirdest habit I’ve ever heard of?

Anyway, thanks to ESPN, the NBA immediately cracked down on Butler and forced him to put an end to his habit. He will no longer be able to chew straws before games, because the powers-that-be believe it sends a dangerous message to kids. Kids often copy what NBA players do, and if they start chewing on straws while playing basketball a lot of unfortunate accidents could occur. It makes sense.

I wonder if the straw withdrawal will affect Butler’s game?

Here’s a little background into Caron Butler’s straw-chewing habit:

Valentino Rossi Looks Ready to Win Again!

Posted: 26 Feb 2010 08:52 AM PST

It was another course of Valentino Rossi at the front of the time sheet on the last day of testing at Sepang on Friday, as Valentino bettered the track record he set in the Shell Advance Malaysian Motorcycle Grand Prix in 2009. This must be troubling news for his competition, who appear to be a bit behind Rossi at this early state of the year or is it that Valentino and his team are just way ahead with the work they have done on the M1. The bike looks fast and deadly to the competition on the track and with possibly the best sportbike racer in history aboard the M1, it’s going to be a difficult challenge to unseat him from his position atop the MotoGP Premier Class ranks in 2010.

Valentino Rossi looked fast and deadly on the track of Sepang on Friday

Rossi went around the track of Sepang in a record time of 2:00:271, almost three-tenth of a second faster than his previous best at the track. Rossi looked happy with the results and continued to work on testing new packages and tyres for his bike as the day went on. It must be a great feeling to be so fast coming into another season, especially knowing that once again every racer on the track has painted a big bullseye on your back and will be trying to take you down. Valentino appeared to be his old self though, even after turning thirty one recently, and his smile was evident everytime you saw him.

Of course it’s easy to be in a good mood when your on top of the world and ready to begin another charge to the top of the sportbike racing world. This is what Valentino Rossi lives for and I’m sure he wouldn’t have it any other way. The thing that can make him greater is a level of competition that pushes you to greater feats and accomplishments and this is what Valentino Rossi really needs. He needs a racer to step forward and challenge him for the world championship at every corner of the season and then we’ll see Valentino rise to greater feats of sportbike racing glory.

Valentino has been challenged by his team mate Jorge Lorenzo of late, but he lacks a racer who can push him beyond the current limits that he has reached. If he can find the racer to push him beyond the current limits, he has a chance to go beyond the legend status and into another sphere.

Esteban Gutierrez Joins Team BMW Sauber

One of the most important things Formula One teams do for the Formula One industry is introduce new talent to the industry by taking young drivers under their wing and introducing them to the sport. BMW Sauber announced that they had taken young driver Esteban Gutierrez under their wings for the 2010 season and the young racer will spend the season watching and learning from the sidelines as Pedro de la Rossa and Kamui Kobayashi sit behind the wheel. This is a great opportunity for the young racer to get his tires wet and see how the power of a Formula One car feels under him. He’ll also get to watch and learn from two racers who can teach him a lot about what it takes to win in Formula One. He’ll also apparently be taking part in the training regiment of the drivers as they prepare for the season.

Esteban will be watching and learning from the wings in 2010

This young Mexican racer showed great promise last year for BMW Sauber in December’s young driver test. He also won the 2008 Formula BMW Europe Championship, by winning seven races, and took part in the British and European Formula Three competitions. This year he’ll be behind the wheel of a GP3 series race car, along with his work with BMW Sauber’s Formula One team. He’s making steady progress and if things keep progressing as they’re, he’ll certainly get his chance somewhere to drive in Formula One.

It costs a lot of money for Formula One teams to bring young racers into the fray under their wing, but they do need to do this, if the sport is going to continue to grow and be healthy. There are only a certain number of testing sessions available for young drivers and teams need to make sure they fill those slots if Formula One is going to have the driving talent it needs in the years ahead to keep the sport going forward and growing. Young racers like Estaban Gutierrez bring new energy and drive to succeed to a sport that lives on the edge and always needs to be striving to go forward. In away they’re an injection of new blood that should provide the sport with new racing heroes, if they have the talent and drive to succeed in the fastest sport on four wheels.

It will be interesting to watch the development of young Esteban during 2010 and the years ahead. In a few years he could be a Formula One racer that challenges for a world title or actually wins a world championship or at least provides us with years of racing entertainment.

Is Bloom Box the green energy holy grail?

Posted: 26 Feb 2010 07:25 AM PST

Endless power cables strung through a city are an eyesore on the skyline. But electricity is crucial to modern life. What if there was a way to maintain electricity, but lose the power lines?

A new technology called the Bloom Box aims to do exactly that.

I’m no expert on this sort of thing, but I’ll attempt to explain this in terms anyone can understand. The Bloom Box is a personal power generator that uses a new kind of fuel cell made of and — yep, common, abundant, cheap beach sand — that are baked into a flat, square ceramic tile (as seen below). One side of the tile absorbs oxygen, while the other side takes in fuel of some kind (usually natural gas, but it’s compatible with other fuels as well), and the result is clean, cheap, wireless, always-on energy.

The company claims that its device has a carbon footprint that’s half the size of the modern power grid, but twice as efficient, thanks to its green, renewable energy. A single fuel cell produces 25 watts, but Bloom Box works by stacking cells into blocks that can generate a full kilowatt, which is enough to power the average American home around the clock. Businesses can be powered by grouping the boxes into a “module,” or a group of modules called a “system.” Bloom Energy, the company behind the Bloom Box, already has major partners who are using Bloom Box systems to help test out the technology and work out the kinks; these partners include Google, eBay (whose HQ you can see outfitted with Bloom Boxes below), FedEx, Walmart, Staples, Coca-Cola, and more.

A Bloom Box in every home, which is Bloom Energy’s ultimate goal, is to replace the grid altogether and let you power your own home more efficiently and inexpensively than ever before. Dreamed up by K.R. Sridhar, PhD, an actual former rocket scientist at NASA, the Bloom Box is meant to make clean, reliable energy affordable for everyone in the world. Sridhar aims to have a Bloom Box powering every home in the world — even in the remote regions of Africa and the poorest parts of India — 10 years from now. His greatest hope is to get the technology streamlined to the point that a single Bloom Box could cost less than $3,000.

CBS’ 60 Minutes recently did a high-profile piece on the Bloom Box, which you can watch here.

The story is based on the game itself and the “game immerses players in the unique environments from the film as they explore the treacherous terrain of the Viking home Island of Berk and soar through the open skies above.”
