“The Karate Kid” Gets New Trailer

Posted: 24 Feb 2010 08:57 PM PST

A new trailer has been released to support the forthcoming film, The Karate Kid, which stars Jaden Smith (son of Will Smith) and Jackie Chan. The Karate Kid_Trailer

In this film, Jaden plays the role of Dre, who move with his mother to China from Detroit. As what happens with the original Karate Kid, he is bullied and teased by his classmates.

After being bullied, he meets maintenance man, Mr. Han (Jackie Chan) who teaches Dre how to defend himself. Even though the movie's title suggests we'll be seeing some karate, the story is actually about kung fu.

You can take a look at the trailer for the film below. You may recognize Dre's mother, who is played by Taraji P. Henson. Taraji starred in the highly acclaimed film The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.

I don't know if I'm feeling this. We'll see how it turns out!

Kardashians Want Movie Made After Them

Posted: 24 Feb 2010 03:46 PM PST

It looks like having a successful television show isn't enough for the Kardashian sisters. Now, they want to spread out the story of their life to the wide screen. They took to internet to discuss which actresses would be most suitable for them.

Kim's choice to play Khloe is Liv Tyler. She backs it up by saying,"She’s tall, beautiful and curvacious with great facial features."

As for who should play Kourtney, Kim concludes, "Kourt’s the smallest of us three, so I think someone like Vanessa Hudgens would be perfect because she’s petite and she’s kind of quiet and intimidating at the same time, haha."

For herself, Kim decided that Penelope Cruz would be the best choice because she loves the idea of having a sexy accent. However, Kourtney was quick to say the best choice would be Jennifer Lopez. Uh, yeah. They certainly have one thing in common: a booty!

Keep dreaming girls! I doubt any of those high-profile actors would sign up to star in a movie about the Kardashians, but that's just my opinion…

Review: Wicked Lasers

Posted: 24 Feb 2010 12:16 PM PST

If a laser pointer and a lightsaber had a lovechild, it would surely be a Wicked Laser.

Wicked Lasers does not advertise its products as “laser pointers.” That’s because the WL guys are hardcore laser geeks, who see their mission as nothing less than producing the highest-quality, most powerful handheld lasers that are made commercially available.

If you have to ask why they do this, or what the laser is used for, then a Wicked Laser is probably something you’re never going to ever understand.

The model sent to me for review, the Evolution Pro, creates a tight, narrow beam of bright green light. Triggering the button with your thumb activates the laser. The beam is roughly half a millimeter in width, and is powerful enough to feel hot when shined on human skin, or even to slice into black plastic trash bags. Outside of Hollywood, I’ve never seen such a powerful laser. Wicked Lasers is adamant about its products complying with FDA standards for safe laser practices. But man, these babies must come in just under those specs.

Its narrow metal body, at just over seven inches long, has a confidence-inspiring heft to it. Even though it has an attached pocket clip, the thing is so heavy, you’d need a high-grade canvas pocket (like something in a heavy jumpsuit) to hold it. The device’s solid, aircraft-grade aluminum casing gives the laser the feel of something more akin to a weapon than a tool. Seriously — it looks and feels like small, black lightsaber. Yoda could use this thing.

Wicked Lasers ships its products in a very nice, hard cardboard carrying case, with built-in magnets to flip open and seal closed. Inside, you’ll find a custom-molded foam cradle where your laser can rest when it’s not in use.

I strongly recommend using protective eyewear, as merely staring at the ultra-bright beam at close range can be painful to the eyes.

Runs on 2 AA batteries, so as you might imagine, it’s a power hog. You’ll get the best and brightest beam out of it during the first fifteen minutes or so on fresh batteries. Under continuous use, you can expect a typical pair of batteries to last about half an hour.

Naturally, something this powerful comes with its fair share of warnings. We all know not to shoot lasers up into the air at airplanes, but Wicked Lasers also cautions against things like aiming at police officers, who could mistake your beam for a gun’s laser sight.

Prices for this model range from $118 for lower-powered models (and at Wicked Lasers, even low-powered models outshine the brightest models of their competitors) to $418 for the big guns.

That something as strong and powerful as this is offered as a consumer product is simply astounding. Wicked Lasers takes great pride in crafting incredible devices, and if you’re in the market for a serious laser, then look no further.

Paul Pierce Is Out Indefinitely

Posted: 24 Feb 2010 11:02 AM PST

The Boston Celtics were dealt a serious blow this week, when it was announced that Paul Pierce is out indefinitely with an injured thumb.

Paul Pierce is suffering from a severe thumb injury.

To rub salt in the wound, Pierce is also reportedly suffering from the flu. Coach Doc Rivers wouldn’t comment on when he thought Pierce would return, but told ESPN that if  [Pierce] needs an extended break, the Celtics are fully prepared for that. After all, they’ve dealt with injuries all season long.

Luckily, the Celtics have plenty of other talented players on their roster to pick up the slack. They went 3-1 over the past four games without Pierce. And with Ray Allen still on the team for the duration of the season,  and Kevin Garnett back to full strength, you can expect the Celtics to make a serious playoff run.

I fully expect Pierce to be back for the playoffs, injured thumb or not. “Indefinitely” in NBA superstar terms really means, “a hot minute.”

Aaron Boone Retires, Finds New Job

Posted: 24 Feb 2010 10:04 AM PST

After 16 years, Aaron Boone is retiring from the game of baseball. Last season, Boone made headlines for returning to the field after open-heart surgery five months prior. In his career, Boone has played for the Cincinnati Reds, New York Yankees, Cleveland Indians, Florida Marlins, Washington Nationals and Houston Astros.

To say Boone has baseball in his blood would be an understatement. His grandfather (Ray), his father (Bob) and his brother (Bret) were All-Star players.

Although Boone is retiring from baseball, he isn’t going far. He’ll be joining “Baseball Tonight” this year on ESPN. There is also talk of him calling games.

In his career, he hit .263 with 126 RBIs, 555 RBIs and 519 runs. Boone was a third round pick out of USC. His first season in the big leagues was in 1997 with the Reds.

“While it’s tough to leave the game as a player, I am eager to start my next career with my new team at ESPN,” said Boone. “I am very grateful that I’ll be able to stay in the game as an ESPN analyst and work with people who share the same passion for baseball that I do.”

Derrek Lee Not Thinking Extension

Posted: 24 Feb 2010 09:50 AM PST

Derrek Lee, the first baseman who is arguably the Chicago Cubs’ best player, is entering the 2010 baseball season on the last year of his contract. Despite that fact, Lee says that he’s not thinking about a contract extension.

Said Lee: “It’s something you really don’t think about. I’m not going to approach them, I just want to go and play.”

Last year, the 34-year-old Lee had one of the best seasons of his career. In 141 games, he hit .306 with 35 homers, 111 RBIs and 91 runs. He made $13.3 million last season.

Considering that he’s 34-year-old, it’s difficult to guess how much the Cubs are willing to pay him in an extension. They may opt to let him play out the season to see if he shows any sign of decline.

However, if Lee has another big season, the Cubs may find themselves in a bidding war.

Dunta Robinson Won’t Be Franchised

Posted: 24 Feb 2010 09:13 AM PST

Last year, the Houston Texans decided to place the franchise tag on cornerback Dunta Robinson. This year, numerous news outlets are reporting that Robinson will not be franchised. If those reports are correct, the 27-year-old Robinson will undoubtedly be one of the hottest names of the NFL free agent market.

The 5-foot-10 Robinson, who was a first round pick by the Texans out of South Carolina in 2004, is the franchise’s career leader in interceptions. Last year, he played in every game for the Texans.

However, some scouts question his true value. He had six interceptions in his rookie season but went without a pick last year and has only seven interceptions in the last five seasons. That said, a number of teams will be willing to throw big money at a player with Robinson’s natural abilities.

The other top cornerback on the free agent market will likely be Leigh Bodden of the New England Patriots. Bodden had five interceptions last year and has the potential to get even better.

Vincent Jackson Pleads Guilty to DUI

Posted: 24 Feb 2010 08:57 AM PST

For the second time while with the San Diego Chargers, wide receiver Vincent Jackson pleaded guilty to DUI. The first time was in 2006 and he was sentenced to probation and public service. The second time was in January of 2009. His latest punishment includes five years of probation, public service and four days in jail.

Additionally, the NFL will likely suspend him for at least one game. With Roger Goodell as the commissioner, a suspension is almost guaranteed — especially since it’s a repeat offense.

Jackson may be in even hotter water considering that he pulled over before the Chargers lost to the New York Jets in the playoffs. Although he wasn’t arrested, his car was impounded and he received a citation for driving on a suspended license.

Considering that he’ll be a free agent, this isn’t the greatest of timing for Jackson. Last season he had the best year of his career, finishing with 68 receptions for 1,167 yards and nine touchdowns.

Blazers Injury Curse? Marcus Camby Injured

Posted: 24 Feb 2010 08:42 AM PST

Are the Portland Trail Blazers centers cursed? First, Greg Oden is lost for the season with a knee injury. Next, Joel Przybilla suffered a serious knee injury and is also out for the season. To fill the whole in the middle, the Blazers traded for Marcus Camby.

Guess what?

Now Marcus Camby is injured.

His injury occurred in only his third game with the game. Against the New Jersey Nets, Brook Lopez stepped on Camby’s ankle and Camby was unable to return.

The good news for Camby and the Blazers is that the injury is considered minor. At most, the Blazers think Camby could miss a few games.

At 33-26, Portland is currently the eighth seed in the Western Conference. However, they’ll need a center to stay healthy if they truly have a hope of staying in contention.

Brandon Roy couldn’t help but ask the obvious question after the latest injury.

Said Roy: “Is our center spot cursed?”

Kobe Bryant Returns, Hits Game-Winner

Posted: 24 Feb 2010 08:22 AM PST

Kobe Bryant never backs down from a big shot. This season, it seems like the Los Angeles Lakers superstar has hit every big shot he has attempted. The latest buzzer beater was on Tuesday in his return from an ankle injury that forced him to miss five games.

With 4.3 seconds remaining and the Memphis Grizzlies up by two points, Kobe Bryant drained a three-pointer to give the Lakers a 99-98 victory. On the game, Bryant had 32 points, seven rebounds, six assists, three steals and two blocks, while hitting 13-of-19 field goal attempts and 3-of-4 from beyond the three-point arc.

While Kobe was the hero, O.J. Mayo was the goat. Prior to Kobe’s three-pointer, Mayo missed a pair of free throws that could have closed out the game for the Grizzlies. Mayo is an 83% free throw shooter on the season and was 4-for-4 on the night before the misses.

Pau Gasol helped out Kobe by producing 22 points, 13 rebounds, five assists, two steals and two blocks. Mayo was the leading scorer for Memphis with 25 points. However, it was the points he didn’t score that opened the door to Kobe’s heroics.

Here’s a video of Kobe Bryant’s buzzer beater against the Grizzlies:
