Luge Competitor Dies Before Olympics Open Posted: 12 Feb 2010 05:45 PM PST What a sad event to kick off the Olympic games. Nodar Kumaritashvili, a Georgian luge competitor, died after his sled went off the track just hours before the opening ceremonies. According to People, International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge (pictured), broke down at a press conference announcing the death, saying, “This is indeed a sad day. I have no words to say.” Kumaritashvili was just 21 years old. He was at the Whistler Sliding Centre in Whistler in British Columbia when he went off the track and “crashed into a steel pole at 90 mph.” Kumaritashvili ranked 44th in the standings. Mark Martin is Hanging on and Waiting Posted: 12 Feb 2010 12:25 PM PST The Chase continues today as NASCAR's Sprint Cup darlings will be in Concord, North Caroline on the track of Lowe's Motor Speedway competing in the NASCAR's Banking 500. The fifth race of the Chase today's race is going to probably cut the field of contenders for the Sprint Cup Championship a little more. Currently Jimmie Johnson in the No. 48 Chevrolet leads the Chase by 12 points to his Hendrick Motorsports team mate Mark Martin in the No. 5 Chevrolet. ![]() Jimmie Johnson will be trying to extend his lead over Mark Martin in today's Banking 500 on Lowe's Motor Speedway Jimmie is chasing history and his fourth NASCAR Sprint Cup Championship in a row, while Mark Martin is just trying to do his best and win his first Sprint Cup Championship, which would probably be a nice cherry on a notable, if not spectacular racing career. If you look at the season statistics you'll see that both drivers have similar records. They have both won five Sprint Cup races this year and they qualified on the front two together, although Jimmie Johnson will have the inside position on the front row. Don't get me wrong, it's going to be hard for Mark Martin to beat Jimmie Johnson in today's race and for the Sprint Cup Championship. It might come down to who wants it the most, since both competitors have talent and experience, although Martin has no experience closing the show on a season. Can Mark Martin beat Jimmie Johnson? This is the question isn't it? How badly does Mark Martin want to win compared to Jimmie Johnson? The best part is we get to find out today and over the remaining races of the Chase. I admit to being a bit sentimental toward the old man Mark Martin, since I am a little long in the tooth myself. Mark Martin has had a long NASCAR career and it would be great to see him finally succeed in taming the tiger he has had by the tail for so many years. On the other hand Jimmie Johnson has already won and is still young and full of energy, so we'll be seeing lots of him in the years to come. This situation in NACAR reminds me of the situation in MotoGP at the current moment. Valentino Rossi is battling his Fiat Yamaha team mate Lorenzo for the MotoGP Premier Class World Championship at present, with only a few races remaining. Rossi is chasing history and his eighth MotoGP World Premier Class Championship. The biggest difference of course is the switch in the age of the current champion and challenger in today's Banking 500, as compared to Valentino and Lorenzo. “Image: Zuma Press” Post from: EveryJoe Mark Martin is Hanging on and Waiting |
Martinsville Speedway is Having a Party Posted: 12 Feb 2010 12:21 PM PST NASCAR fanatics looking for a great race venue to view their favourite sport will find that Martinsville Speedway is one of the best facilities for watching a NASCAR race in the world of NASCAR. A race track that has a nice mix of old time racing and the new, Martinsville Speedway will give fans the chance to talk to race heroes and learn about some of the old stories of NASCAR, from an early age. The atmosphere is electric on the weekends when they hold races at this amazing race track and the fans get a treat that they’ll be talking to their grand kids about. You can spend the weekend having fun, meeting interesting people in the racing industry and even other fans that will inspire you. The next scheduled big NASCAR event occuring at Martinsville Speedway will be the Goody’s Fast Pain Relief 500 on the weekend of March 26-28. Martinsville Speedway and Goody’s have a relationship that has made for one of the best weekends for fans in the industry and you won’t be disappointed if you show up to say hello and take in the race. This year Martinsville Speedway and Goody’s will bring race fans stories on some of the greatest racers in NASCAR history. Fans will even get to ask some of their older heroes a few questions that have been burning a hole in their minds, ask for the autograph that they have dreamed about and grab something to help them remember the event for years to come. This could be your one chance to take in a NASCAR event and talk to racing professionals that will inspire and teach you things about racing you didn’t know. Fans who come to the weekend affair will also have a chance at one of 10,000 commemorative prints designed by artist Sam Bass, something that will only increase in value with the years. Apparently, the prints include drivers from the early days of NASCAR, as well as those that came later in NASCAR history. If you’re a fan of old time racing, this could be your chance to grab a print with limited availability that only a select few racing fans in the history of NASCAR will have. Sam Bass hails from Virginia and NASCAR fans from Virginia will have a special place in their hearts for these prints. The weekend is going to be a special tribute, in away, to old time racing and the racers that helped write NASCAR history. Martinsville Speedway wants to invite all race fans to the track on the weekend of March 26-28, for an old time racing-party that will make them laugh and entertain them. The race is going to be a party you don’t want to miss. “Image: Zuma Press” Post from: EveryJoe Martinsville Speedway is Having a Party |
Heavy Rain Impressions and TONS of Videos Posted: 12 Feb 2010 10:22 AM PST My plan for yesterday mainly consisted of me downloading Heavy Rain and then playing the demo…a couple of times. Unfortunately, Heavy Rain didn’t hit the PSN until late in the afternoon/early night. I don’t remember when exactly I finally got to I had read a couple of reviews of Heavy Rain and I was expecting to not like the controls. I was expecting the controls to completely detract from the gameplay. But, I was wrong. While things were ackward for me at the start – spider monkeying my fingers to hold down triangle, square and circle at the same time was a tad bit challenging – once I got used to how Quantic had set the game up, things got easier and I forgot about what my hands were doing and got sucked into the story. I will say the controls seemed a bit “mushy” for me but like I’ve said on Twitter [@TasteLikeCrazy], my controller was almost dead when I started the demo so I’m not sure if that was a contributing factor to the pudding controls. I also had issues with reading any of the text on the screen which made for interesting an interesting gameplay experience. Then again, I am playing on a “regular” TV since we have yet to upgrade to an HD. Just keep that in mind if you’re playing on an older TV. Heavy Rain is a game I will be getting. It’s beautiful, engrossing and most importantly, it’s story driven. If you read some of the comments left on the videos below, you’ll notice more than a few where people have said Heavy Rain makes them want to buy a PS3. The game really is that impressive. Below are the videos, you may have seen some of them but I doubt you’ve seen them all. Enjoy and be sure to check out PSN to download the demo. Here’s the “For Love” trailer which I hadn’t seen until this morning: This one’s an IGN review – I pretty much agree with everything this guys says. This trailer is my favorite [and shortest] and it comes from the very end of the demo. And these are the videos of gameplay from the demo. As an interesting aside, when I played the demo, the hooker/dead kid’s mom got really pissed off at my detective dude and kicked his ass out. SO, it’s pretty cool to be able to watch what would have happened if I hadn’t sucked. And finally, this is some “leaked” footage of the first few minutes of the actual complete game’s gameplay. Warning: you will see FBI agent’s ass. Image/QuanticDream Post from: EveryJoe Heavy Rain Impressions and TONS of Videos |
Bill Clinton’s February Heart Health Month Posted: 12 Feb 2010 04:51 AM PST It’s all over the media – February is Heart Health Month and President Bill Clinton has just helped prove the importance of knowing about heart issues and paying attention to the signs and symptoms our hearts may show.
Stents support the walls of the artery, pushing them open, allowing the blood to flow through. There are different types of stents – bare metal stents, which are just the expandable tubes, and drug-eluting stents, which are expandable tubes that are coated with a medication that is slowly released, aimed at keeping the artery opened. Stents are a very effective way to treat arterial blockages but, as seen with Clinton, the arteries can become blocked again. When the blockages occur, not as much blood can pass through the artery. As a result, the tissue that is supposed to be nourished by the blood begins to die. If it is the heart muscle that is not receiving adequate amounts of blood, this is what causes a heart attack. Inserting a stent does not require major surgery, so recovery is usually quite quick. To insert a stent, the doctor threads a catheter (long tube) through an artery in the wrist or groin. The catheter winds its way to the blockage and the stent is installed with way. The only incision is a small one in the wrist or groin. It is, however, a serious procedure, because any time there is an incision and something as invasive as a catheter through the artery, complications may occur. These range from infections to a rupture of the artery. Most people who have stents must take blood-thinning medications to prevent the blood “catching” on the edges of the stent and causing a blood clot. Other than this, unless the doctors have given other instructions, the patients can live a normal life. ~~~ Images: Newscom.com Post from: EveryJoe Bill Clinton’s February Heart Health Month |
Chick of the Day: Abbey Clancy Posted: 12 Feb 2010 01:44 AM PST Abbey Clancy is an British lingerie and runway model. The 5-foot-9 blonde appeared on Britain’s Next Top Model in 2006 — finishing in second place. She has also been in a number of top magazines including Maxim, GQ, FHM and many more. For the 2010 SI Swimsuit Issue, Abbey wore body paint rather than an actual swimsuit. You can see the results here on the Sports Illustrated website. "It's not as glamorous as it looks," she said. "I was stripped and sprayed in places you wouldn't imagine, but I did have fun. "At the beginning of the day when I was naked I was thinking, ooh my bottom and my boobs are out. But by the end you're just walking around because you actually feel clothed and I was tempted not to wash it off – to fly home to England with it all on!" Abbey’s nipple slip pictures circulated around the internet last year. Let’s take a look at this English hottie. ![]() Image: Zuma Press Post from: EveryJoe Chick of the Day: Abbey Clancy |
Grading the New 2009-10 FBS Coaches, part 2 Posted: 12 Feb 2010 01:00 AM PST There have been a number of new coaches hired for the upcoming year, and some of them were great changes. Others? Not so much. You can read part 1 of this list here. Florida State
It’s the end of an era at Florida State. However, as sad as we all are to see Bowden go (especially being forced out a year or two earlier than he wanted), Fisher is ready for this job. He’s been waiting for it for years, and he knows this program inside and out. Kansas
There are few coaches that I dislike more than Mangino, so I was glad to see him go at Kansas. Gill is coming from Buffalo, and while he did well there, this is his first chance at head coaching on a major stage. Will he succeed? I hope so. He certain has the tools for it now. Kentucky
Brooks should have never left Oregon. He was doing well there, and was mediocre at best when he left to coach in the NFL. When returning to the college stage with the Jayhawks, his coaching was also luke-warm, and assistant coach Phillips was announce as his predecessor in early 2008. Honestly, I’m not sure he’ll be able to create a winning program at Kentucky. I certainly don’t think that he’s a bad coach, but Kentucky really needs some fresh blood, in my opinion. Louisiana-Monroe
Berry’s skills as a head coach are questionable. At Illinois State, he took the team to a conference championship. But when he was hired at Army? Failure. Out of the four years he was there, they finished last three years and next to last the fourth year. Since then, he’s bounced around in assistant coaching positions. So why did I give him such a high grade? Because I think he has potential. He’s not a bad coach, and I think at a school like ULM, he could really shine. Berry may never coach at USC, but he’s not a bad coach, and he deserves a chance. Louisiana Tech
At a school like Louisiana Tech, you aren’t going to attract major names in college football. Sonny Dykes is about as major as it gets, and I think he’s a great choice for the program. This past season, Dykes was a finalist for the Broyles Award, and he’s often been called one of the best recruiters in the country. Personally, I think he could have landed a job at a better school, and I think that he will eventually…but in meantime, I think he’s going to take this team to a whole new level. More grades to come! Dance for Exercise and Fitness Posted: 11 Feb 2010 11:50 PM PST You’ve seen how sweaty contestants on “Dancing with the Stars” get after a performance. The reason is dancing is a highly aerobic exercise that burns calories at a high rate. Dancing also requires strength, flexibility, stamina, coordination, balance, and agility all wrapped in one. Strength comes from the suspension of your body weight in different angles and positions. Think of how a dancer contorts their body away from center alignment but still maintains balance. This is especially grueling for the quads and sometimes calves. Endurance is captured from the sustained periods of complex physical activity. If you run several songs together on the dance floor, you can gain a lot in terms of physical conditioning. Of course you can’t be a complete dancer unless you have the flexibility to reach proper range of motions in the various dance moves. Post from: EveryJoe Dance for Exercise and Fitness |

John Mayer Apologizes For Racial Comments Posted: 11 Feb 2010 09:40 PM PST John Mayer has come under fire for some comments that may be perceived as racist by some. In an interview with Playboy magazine, Mayer said that his penis is "sort of like a white supremacist" because he doesn't have sex with African-American women. Additionally, he talked about his relationships with Jessica Simpson ("That girl was like crack As if that wasn't enough, he added that his "biggest dream is to write pornography." Nice. To his credit, the singer has been apologizing like crazy saying that he plans "to stop trying to be so raw in interviews." He also said that he shouldn't have used the "n" word during the interview (yeah… he went there). "I am sorry that I used the (‘N’) word. And it’s such a shame that I did because the point I was trying to make was in the exact opposite spirit of the word itself," Mayer said in a Twitter. "It was arrogant of me to think I could intellectualize using it because I realize that there’s no intellectualizing a word that is so emotionally charged." The March issue of Playboy hits newsstands today. Mayer is currently on a tour across North America to promote his newest album, Battle Studies. image: Amazon Post from: EveryJoe John Mayer Apologizes For Racial Comments |
