Barbara Walters to Air Last Oscar Special

Posted: 16 Feb 2010 04:27 PM PST

It looks as though Barbara Walters will be ending her annual Oscar specials. Barbara revealed the news recently on an episode of The View, where she co-hosts. After this year's special airs, we won't be seeing anymore Oscar coverage from Ms. Walters.

She said of the show, "ABC has asked me to keep doing these specials, as they have been so successful — and I’m thrilled we have such great stars and have such a wonderful show — but to be honest, I feel like I’ve ‘been there, done that.’"

She adds, "This special has been a labor of love for 29 years. I will always remember when Hugh Jackman gave me a private lap dance or sitting down with the legendary Bette Davis or being taught to tango by Al Pacino. It’s those priceless moments that have made this special the Oscar tradition that it has become, but I truly feel enough is enough."

Those scheduled to appear on the final episode are Sandra Bullock and Mo'Nique. However, we can still assume she will continue her work on her other projects including The 10 Most Fascinating People and The View.

Will any of you be missing these specials?

Out on DVD: “Good Hair”

Posted: 16 Feb 2010 02:35 PM PST

If you're looking to watch something informative, interesting and funny, apparently, the film Good Hair might be a good choice for you. The film was produced and narrated by comedian Chris Rock, who also stars in the documentary.Good Hair

The film is a documentary about African American women's hair, and the struggle to have what is referred to as "good hair." He did a lot of research and went many places including beauty salons, hair styling conventions, barber shops and even went to India, where many hair weaves are actually originate.

You'll also see appearances made by Ice-T, Maya Angelou, Paul Mooney, Raven-Symoné,  Nia Long, KRS-One, Salt-n-Pepa, Kerry Washington, Eve, Reverend Al Sharpton, and Meagan Good.

They speak about their hair and experiences related to hair in the African American community. He also interviews hair stylists, product consumers and people in the hair industry.

Rock was slammed with a lawsuit filed by a woman named Regina Kimbell who says that his film is an infringement on her documentary My Nappy Roots: A Journey Through Black Hair-itage. She supposedly screened it for him in 2007.

I looks like an interesting documentary definitely worth watching. Coming from African American heritage, I definitely know the struggle of trying to have what people think is "good hair"! You can watch the movie on DVD now.

Stoudemire Would Rather Go To Miami

Posted: 16 Feb 2010 10:55 AM PST

If you had your choice between playing basketball with LeBron James or Dwayne Wade, who would you choose?

According to SI.com, Amar’e Stoudemire secretly prefers Wade.

As the subject of the biggest trade rumor in the NBA, Stoudemire apparently has two options: Miami or Cleveland. Those are the two teams who are currently pushing possible trades with the Phoenix Suns.

Amare Stoudemire patiently awaits his fate: Cleveland or Miami.

Just a week or so ago, it was reported that Stoudemire was more than happy to stay with the Suns. But it looks at though the feeling isn’t mutual. A trade is definitely coming. Right now, it’s just a matter of where Stoudemire ends up.

LeBron is all about Stoudemire coming to Cleveland. But we’ve seen this scenario before. Shaq and Stoudemire don’t necessarily fit well together, which could possibly be why Stoudemire would rather go to Miami to play with Wade instead.

If he has a say in the matter, my guess is that he’ll plead for a chance to play for the Heat. And LeBron will just have try to win a championship with what he’s got.

Safety of Circumcision Reviewed

Posted: 16 Feb 2010 09:26 AM PST

Circumcision is arguably the most commonly performed procedure that involve incisions. Estimates are that about one in three men around the world are circumcised. Despite the commonality of the procedure, few studies have been done about the safety of the procedure. News of circumcisions “gone wrong” are sensational and spreads fast, but is it common?

Researchers in the United Kingdom studied literature that has been published on the topic of circumcision and safety. The results were published in the most recent issue of BMC Urology. Information was gathered from studies that discussed the frequency of problems following neonatal, infant or child circumcision.

The researchers found that, overall, there were not many adverse events, problems that occurred as the result of circumcision. Among babies circumcised before they were a year old, any adverse events were relatively minor, such as extra bleeding. Infections and swelling, also considered minor, occurred in about 1.5% of cases. Severe complications were rare. When the researchers looked at circumcisions done by medical providers on children over 1 year old, there were more adverse events (around 6%), but more severe complications tended to be with inexperienced providers or with people who did not have the right supplies.

According to the study,

Traditional circumcision as a rite of passage is associated with substantially greater risks, more severe complications than medical circumcision or traditional circumcision among neonates.

Get in Shape With a… Wii?

Posted: 15 Feb 2010 11:10 PM PST

Wii fitness.  I’m torn.  Do I mock it or go buy the video game console?  For all of you gamers, forgive me, but I’m not too “up” on video games as I have none and I never play.  Nevertheless, there’s this web buzz about getting in shape with a Wii that I can’t ignore as a cover all and top investigative fitness blogger.

What I’m talking about here is going beyond just the Dance Dance Revolution and virtual tennis games.  In the current market, there are now “games” you can play to get in shape.  For example, yoga on the Wii is very popular.  You can also go for strength training, cardio, and others.

In a way, it sounds so lame to me.  It reminds me of when Bart Simpson wanted to play a virtual lawn mowing game but wouldn’t mow the lawn outside.  In another light, it makes sense to me.  If I think of going for fitness on the Wii as akin to watching a follow along exercise video like when Billy Blanks Tae Bo fad came out or any other exercise video for that matter.

What I think could be really cool about it is all the tracking it does for you.  Wii has your weight and BMI down automatically and then tracks your progress and grades how you perform during the exercises.  If you’re a beginner, there are lower fitness levels that work as stepping stones to advancing in better fitness.

Read more at the official website: wiifit.com.

Whether or not this sounds cool initially, I think it’s definitely worth a try. All that matters is the bottom line and if the Wii can get you healthier, then it doesn’t matter if you are playing virtual lawn mower while your grass stands a foot tall.

If you can get past this video, then you can consider going to the next level of buying it.

Condoms Prove That Size Does Matter

Posted: 15 Feb 2010 10:24 PM PST

I'm not going to lie – I've definitely had sex without using protection when I really should have known better.  The thing is that using condoms can be a frustrating experience even though things really have come a long way.  trojan

A study using data from 436 men between the ages of 18 and 67 has shown that ill-fitting condoms are part of the reason why the prophylactics weren't used during sexual intercourse.

Among the complaints were breakage, slippage and irritation that resulted in a loss of erection, difficulty reaching orgasm or even just removing the condom before intercourse ended.  This happened to a whopping 44.7 percent of respondents!

I'd like to see something done to fix this problem since safe-sex is pretty important but there's no point in having a million varieties of condoms if they aren't going to fit properly.

Have you ever had a problem with a condom?

Toyota Recalling Tacoma, Woes Worsen

Posted: 15 Feb 2010 10:09 PM PST

The Toyota Tacoma is the latest vehicle to come under scrutiny as the Japanese auto giant struggles to retain some semblance of reliability.  It's really unfortunate since Toyota really has been one of the most trusted automakers but the recalls are making the public increasingly uncertain.2010_toyota_Tacoma

The world’s biggest auto manufacturer is voluntarily recalling about 10,000 pickups in North America.  While millions of their vehicles have been taken off the road in recent months due to accelerator and brake problems and now the 2010 model of Tacoma may have cracks in their front drive shafts.

Honestly, this is really disappointing considering the fact that the U.S. military has been contemplating using the Tacoma as one of their fleet vehicles and the current model was thought to be among the most reliable mid-sized trucks on the road.
