Ohno! Apolo Wins 7th Olympic Medal

Posted: 21 Feb 2010 02:23 PM PST

Apolo Anton Ohno won the bronze medal in 1000 meter speed skating on Saturday, but that win happened to put him into the Olympic record books. According to People he’s now the “most decorated American athlete in Winter Olympics history.” Michael Phelps, who has 14 medals and is the “most decorated Olympian of all time” was there cheering Ohno on.

I caught an interesting interview from the summer with Ohno, and he talked about being a “relative baby” in the sport. He admitted that he was working hard over the summer, but he really felt he had a ways to go before he was at his peak in terms of his sport. At just 27, he has several years ahead of him yet where he could win even more medals. He also said he has seen players come and go, and some even becoming coaches. He was excited for the American team he was on and felt it was a strong one.

Here is the interview. Take a listen:

Magic Hand Cavs Third Straight Loss

Posted: 21 Feb 2010 01:57 PM PST

Prior to the All-Star break, the Cleveland Cavaliers had win 13 straight games. After falling 101-95 to the Orlando Magic on Sunday, the Cavs have now lost all three games since the break. It’s the first time in two years that the Cavs have lost three straight contests.

Heading into the fourth quarter of the game against the Magic, the Cavs held a two-point lead. But LeBron James hit only one of his five shots in the quarter and the Magic were able to ride Dwight Howard to victory. Howard finish the game with 22 points, 16 rebounds and four blocked shots.

As for James, he had another great game — finishing with 33 points, nine rebounds and six assists. Shaquille O’Neal had 20 points and five rebounds in 31 minutes, while newly acquired Antawn Jamison had 19 points and eight rebounds.

With the win, the Magic are now five games behind the Cavs in the Eastern Conference standings and one game ahead of the Boston Celtics.

Jaguars Re-sign Troy Williamson

Posted: 21 Feb 2010 01:45 PM PST

Troy Williamson will get another chance to reach his potential. The former first round pick has signed a one-year deal to return to the Jacksonville Jaguars. 2010 will be his third season with the Jaguars.

In 2008, Williamson had five catches for 30 yards and a touchdown. Last year, Williamson starred in the preseason but was injured in Week 2 after totaling three catches for 34 yards. Due to his strong preseason play, Williams headed into the regular season as a starter.

The 26-year-old speedster is still young enough to turn it around but this may be his last chance. In his five-year career, Williamson has 87 catches for 1,131 yards and four touchdowns.

Once upon a time, the Minnesota Vikings viewed Williamson as the replacement for Randy Moss. Needless to say, that didn’t happen. Now the Jaguars just hope he’ll be an asset to a team with a very poor stable of wide receivers.

Adrian Pasdar Arrested for DUI

Posted: 21 Feb 2010 10:24 AM PST

According to reports, Heroes star, Adrian Pasdar was arrested on Wednesday night in Los Angeles on suspicion of DUI. He was supposedly going 94 mph on the 405 Freeway when he was stopped. He is said to have been taken in at 2:59am and police had determined he was under the influence.

Going by Adrian’s booking report he was reportedly released on $15,000 and was picked up from the station at 8:30 am.

I wonder if wife Natalie Maines of the Dixie Chicks picked him up from the station. You know he got in a lot of trouble when he got home. Do you think we’ll be seeing a mugshot any time soon?

Jerez Day Four

Posted: 21 Feb 2010 09:16 AM PST

The boys of Formula One were out on the track at Jerez for the fourth straight day on Saturday and there were a few notable additions to the list of drivers that were looking fast out on the track. 2009 Formula One champion, Jenson button finally got his McLaren race car running a little faster and managed to finish the day at the top of the time sheet. His best time around the track on the day was 1:18:871, just two-tenths of a second ahead of his nearest competitor on the day, Robert Kubica in his Renault.

Kobayashi had a pretty good day behind the wheel

Jenson appeared to be working on the tire set up and getting a feel for the durability factor of the tires on the MP4-25. He was able to get in about 108 laps on the day, so the technicians and engineers should have lots of data to help them get the car set up better. Robert Kubica on the other hand looked fast out on the track is the Renault R30. He was able to get in about 117 laps in the R30 and appeared to be working on the assessing the car during long runs on the track. They appeared to be working on different fuel loads, which changes the balance of the car, in the morning, while in the afternoon they moved to heavy fuel loads and began testing the car over long runs on the track. They appeared to get lots of work done with the car, so they must be really happy with the results from the four days of testing at Jerez.

The third fastest driver on the fourth day of testing was Kamui Kobayashi in the BMW Sauber C29 offering. Kamui smiles a lot, but he looked like he was smiling even brighter after the testing, so they must be really happy with his progess, so far, in the car. The weather did finally cooperate on the day, so the teams and racers were able to get more work done and this must have been a real relief after the first few days. Kobayashi was able to get about 117 laps in on the track at Jerez, so the engineers and technicians will be busy until the next session, getting things set up on the car for the next test at Barcelona.

Force India’s Vitantonio Liuzzi had a great day on the track and had the fourth best time around the track on the day. He was able to get about 80 laps in and looked comfortable behind the wheel of the car. The team was able to get work done on different fuel loads and a few different set ups on the car, so they did get a lot of valuable work done and the car seemed to respond well to the changes. They should be happy with the progress of the car, so far, but they still have lots of work to do, before the car will be ready to race.

Jerez Day Four

Kyle Busch Wins Stater Bros. 300

Posted: 21 Feb 2010 08:56 AM PST

The boys and now girls of NASCAR were out on the track of the Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California this weekend ripping up the pavement and trying to get a good start to the season with a win in the Stater Bros. 300. Patrick Danica’s fierce smile could be seen behind the wheel as the flag was in the air, but with the drop of the flag this was all forgotten as she battled to hold her own against the boys. Dancia would end up two laps down in after the first segment of the race and in last place of all the cars on the field. She battle back once she got her legs under her and managed to pass a few of the boys during the half way point to stand about 34th, but still two laps down. By the end of the race Danica would finish in 31st, three laps behind the lead cars in her second race of the 2010 Nationwide Series season, which actually isn’t too bad.

Kyle Busch went past Greg Biffle on the last lap to take the win

The eventual winner of the Stater Bros. 300 would be Kyle Busch, who on the last lap came from behind to pass Greg Biffle. Kyle Busch would end up stealing the show from Biffle who was looking strong, and the racer and car that looked the strongest on the track, Busch’s teammate Joey Logano. Kyle Busch managed to slip ahead of Biffle as they came off the corner and pulled ahead as they approached the line and crossed just .051 seconds ahead of Biffle. This occurred off of a green-white-checkered flag finish that meant the race went two laps beyond the scheduled 150 laps. Joey appeared to spin his tires off the restart, which really put him behind the eight ball during the last lap. He would have had a chance to win, if he had kept his tires solidly on the track, which would have given him a better start, but he’s young and you can bet this won’t happen again.

Kyle Busch was on Biffle’s bumper as they started the last lap of the race and when Biffle wabbled a bit and lost some speed for a second, Busch pounced down inside and took the lead from Biffle. Brad Keselowski pulled up beside Busch and Biffle as they came around for the last lap, but lost a three car race off of Turn 4 to the line. This win is Kyle Busch’s 31st Nationwide Series career victory, which actually puts him in third place on the all time list, tied with Jack Ingram.

Carl Edwards finished fourth in the Stater Bros. 300, just ahead of Joey Logano, who you can bet made a few notes about the race and the things that might have been important to his failing to win. The other racers better keep an eye out for Joey on the track in 2010, he appears ready to make his move.

Olympian Apologizes For Celebration

Posted: 20 Feb 2010 11:45 PM PST

Canadians are often described as well-mannered and even a little bland but gold medal winner, Jon Montgomery, did a lot to shatter that image after he discovered that he had come out on top at the men's skeleton finals.

Feb. 19, 2010 - Whistler, BC, Canada - WHISTLER, BC: FEBRUARY 19, 2010 -- Canadian skeleton athlete Jon Montgomery celebrates his gold medal performance after his final run at the The Whistler Sliding Centre in Whistler, BC, during the 2010 Olympic Games, Friday February 19, 2010. He apologized for his over-the-top cheering (I thought it was great, personally) said:

"I had said at the beginning of the race that if I was in that position and I did get gold coming from behind that I was going to remain stoic and respectful because you never want to cheer when somebody else loses. But I have to apologise to Martins, that didn't happen, I lost my mind when I saw the 0.07 come up and I was like I had stuck my finger in a light socket."

I wish I could find a video – it really was an incredible outburst.  And it was totally warranted.  Up until these Games, Canada had never won a gold medal on home turf and the fact that this was the host country's fourth is pretty exciting.

Those pictures are pretty self-explanatory but they just show Monty's behavior after winning a gold medal.  He actually seems like a normal guy otherwise.  Here's his official athlete profile video.
