Florida State Gives Up Their Wins

Bowden officially ends his coaching career with fewer wins. Bummer. Image: Newscom

It seems like Florida State is finally giving up their wins from the 2006 and 2007 football seasons. Last month, the NCAA rejected their appeal, which stated that the school should the football wins, even though some of the students on the team were involved in a massive cheating scandal involving an online music class.

The school is giving up 5 wines from 2006, including their win in the Emerald Bowl, along with 7 wins from the following year. The school fought so hard for the wins in part because former head coach Bobby Bowden retired at this year of this season with the second-most winning career in major college football. Now that the school is being stripped of the wins, he ends his football career with 377 wins. That’s still second-best, behind Penn State’s Joe Paterno.

Football wasn’t the only sport affected by this scandal. Most notably, they’re also relinquishing their 2007 championship in men’s track and field. Basketball, swimming/diving, baseball, softball, cross country, and golf also lost wins or meet placings.

iPhone App Impact on Speeding Ticket Revenue

Posted: 08 Feb 2010 06:10 PM PST

The other day I drove down to Lexington, Kentucky to go see the University of Kentucky Wildcats play the Ole Miss Rebels. On the way over I picked up my friend Ryan in Cincinnati and we headed down to Kentucky.

Trapster-app-ticket-revenue

My friend has an app for his iPhone (it’s also available for other phones) called Trapster which alerts you to police officers on the road you’re travelling before you get to them. To some degree, it works like a radar detector, but instead it relies on a network of other iPhone users that have the Trapster app (almost 4 million to date) to “tag” or mark police officers, speed traps and now even accidents, when they seem them.

As cool as all the features and the functionality is, I got to wondering today if the spread of this app and others that are perhaps similar has put any kind of significant dent in the revenues generated by speeding tickets because people are avoiding them using the app.

Part of me thinks that it’s had to have some kind of noticeable impact, but maybe it really hasn’t been that much more than when radar detectors first came out. Do you think there’s any chance of this kind of an app being outlawed?

Aric Almirola is Ready to Race

Posted: 08 Feb 2010 05:03 PM PST

Planning on being in Daytona, Beach on February 12 and looking for something to do that you won’t forget? Have you ever watched a race with trucks that exceed normal speeds? If you answered “Yes!” to any of these questions? You might want to stop by one of the oldest icons of racing history in America, Daytona International Speedway, to check out the trucks that will be racing that day. You won’t be disappointed as the action on the track will be amazing and fast and you’ll get to witness some of the top racers in the world as they take racing trucks around the high-banks of Daytona.

Aric Almirola is ready to drive his truck to victory in 2010

The first race of the Camping World Truck Series will be run on Friday 12, the NextEra Energy Resources 250, and all the boys will be there in their trucks. It won’t take you long before you’ll know all the racers and teams and before you know it, you’ll be a fan. Soon, you’ll be making plans to attend a Sprint Cup Series competition or Nationwide Series race, or another Camping Truck World Series race. Before you know it, you’ll have all the accessories that are required of a fanatical fan of NASCAR, and be spending far too much time trying to find more time to spend attending your favourite sport.

Fans that do make it to Daytona International Speedway for the NextEra Energy Resources 250 will be treated to a form of entertainment that is one of the most popular forms of entertainment in the world. You’ll get to see racers, like Aric Almirola, who will be behind the wheel of the No. 51 AkAwareness.com Graceway Pharmaceuticals, LLC Toyota Tundra for the 2010 Camping World Truck Series season. Aric races for Billy Ballew Motorsports, who he had a great year with in 2009, so expectations are that he should contend in 2010 for the championship.

Last year he recorded seven top-five and ten top-ten finishes in the 16 races he competed in 2009 and with the backing and support he has in 2010, Aric should be able to do even better. At least that’s the hope for all involved who like to watch entertaining racing and racers as they do their thing on the track. Aric is one of these extremely entertaining racers and it will be a pleasure to watch him work, once again.

Peyton Manning Pulled a Brett Favre

Posted: 08 Feb 2010 04:31 PM PST

No, he didn’t say he was going to retire (and unretire, and retire…), instead he threw a key interception in the last moments of a championship game. Unlike Brett Favre, though, Manning had not kept the score close enough to even attempt a comeback.

The Saints played their hearts out, and they deserved to win. I’ve never seen a team make such a gutsy move as that second half onside kick. No team has ever done an onside kick in the Super Bowl except in the fourth quarter. The Saints made history by doing that, and it turned the entire game around for them.

Now, Reggie Bush can finally get a ring! (Can a ring of a different kind be far behind? Now that he’s won the Super Bowl, you know Kim Kardashian will be looking to him for a ring of her own.)

Ted Musgrave is Ready to Race

Posted: 08 Feb 2010 02:13 PM PST

The 2010 Camping World Truck Series will get underway on Friday 12, after being off for too long, and fans of the fastest trucking sport in the world are just about ready to explode, after holding in their excitement over the start of another season, for months. The first race of the Camping World Truck Series will be held on the iconic track of Daytona International Speedway, a venue that has seen more than its share of races. Fans should contact their travel agents and purchase their ticket for the race, before their all gone and they’re left out in the cold.

2005 Camping World Truck Series Champion, Ted Musgrave is ready to return to his truck.

The 2010 Camping World Truck Series is going to be exciting for a lot of reasons, but one of the most exciting is the return of 2005 Camping World Truck Series Champion, Ted Musgrave to the series after an extended vacation from racing trucks. Ted has a very successful history on the track of Daytona International Speedway, with three top-five and four top-ten finishes on the 2.5-mile track that rests near Daytona, Beach, after a total of 18 races. Surely, he’s chomping at his bit to get back out on the track in the No. 15 Hope for Haiti Billy Ballew Motorsports Toyota Tundra NASCAR Camping World Truck Series truck he’ll be driving for the first race of the season.

Daytona International Speedway is a high-banked track that requires great aerodynamics in the trucks that run on the track and it’s a difficult place to win consistently. You can have the fastest truck and still finish last or the worst truck and win the race, it all depends on so many factors that no one can really predict what will happen. A racer needs to work with other trucks on the track in order to win on Daytona and getting in disagreements with other trucks on the track can be detrimental to winning. Keeping within yourself and your truck is important, but you’re going to need help in order to finish good, just as all the racers will.

Friday is going to be a fun and exciting time for all in attendance and I for one am looking forward to getting the trucks racing again. If you’re planning on being there, I’ll be the funny looking Chinaman with the NASCAR baseball cap. Stop and say hello to me and I’ll buy you a beer and we’ll enjoy the greatest sport in the world together.

IVF Boys May Inherit Dad’s Infertility

Posted: 08 Feb 2010 12:46 PM PST

If your partner became pregnant with a boy through IVF (in vitro fertilization, using intracytoplasmic sperm injection, ICSI, researchers say that the boy has a high chance of having the same infertility problems that you may have.

According to a Mail Online article, IVF Fathers Could Pass Infertility On To Sons, although the boys are too young to test for fertility,

A [UK] study has found that boys conceived using the popular form of fertility treatment often had shorter fingers  -  a trait associated with infertility.

The length of the fingers is important because research has shown that men with low sperm counts “often have ring fingers the same length as their index finger  -  while fertile men are more likely to have a ring finger that is longer.”
IVF is becoming an increasingly used method to become pregnant. Statistics show that as many as one in 50 births in the United Kingdom is accomplished through IVF and half of those use the ICSI method.
This method is helpful if the sperm is not strong or fast enough to reach the egg for fertilization through natural intercourse or with insemination. In this case, individual sperm is injected into the egg, allowing fertilization. One of the issues that may be coming up is, if the sperm isn’t healthy enough to reach the egg, in competition with the others, is it healthy enough to be used to fertilize an egg?
At this point, the researchers aren’t sure of what the future holds for the boys, but they will be followed to see what develops as they mature.

Doc Rivers Thinks The Magic Are Better

Posted: 08 Feb 2010 07:03 AM PST

After losing to the Orlando Magic on Sunday, Boston Celtics coach Doc Rivers voiced his opinion on the matter.

“I love our team on paper, but we tend to be front-runners,” he said on ESPN’s Daily Dime. When we get a good lead we relax and teams take advantage of it and then you’re caught and it’s tough to turn it back on.”

Doc Rivers watched helplessly as his Celtics blew a commanding lead against the Magic.

The Celtics let the Magic go on a 19-point run in the third quarter. Playing with four fouls, Dwight Howard stayed in the game and served as the catalyst for the run.

Magic coach Stan Van Gundy believed that leaving Howard in the game was the only way his team was going to beat the Celtics. “We were already down,” he said. “If he picks up his fifth then we’ll deal with it. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t.”

Well, it certainly worked this time. Howard had 16 points, 13 rebounds and two block.  While Rasheed Wallace and Kendrick Perkins combined for just four measly points.

“We’re getting what we deserved,” Rivers added. “I thought we played like crap.”

He went on to add that he believes that the Magic, the Lakers and the Hawks are all better than his team right now. And until the Celtics start pulling out some wins, who’s going to disagree with him?

Industrial Cleaners & Parkinson’s Disease

Posted: 08 Feb 2010 05:50 AM PST

A study of men (99 sets of twins) and exposure to tricholorethylene (TCE), a chemical once widely used to clean metal such as auto parts has found a possible connection between the chemical and an higher risk of developing Parkinson’s disease.

TCE, no longer widely used, was a mainstay in dry cleaning and in garages and similar settings because of its ability to clean grease from metal parts. Its use was discontinued in many places due to health concern. Now, many years later, it still may be causing problems for the people who used to work with the chemical.

Researchers studied 99 male twins, where one of the twins had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, a neurological disorder. When calculating the numbers of the men who were exposed to TCE when working as dry cleaners, machinists, mechanics or electricians, the researchers found that those who were exposed had 5.5 times higher risk of developing Parkinsons than the men who had not worked with TCE.

While the researchers can’t tell how to prevent the development of Parkinsons, knowing the history of work with TCE may help doctors identify Parkinsons in an earlier stage.

The primary symptoms of Parkinson’s disease are:

  • Temor, trembling in hands, arms, legs, jaw, and face
  • Rigidity, stiffness of the limbs and trunk
  • Bradykinesia, slowness of movement
  • Difficulty with balance and coordination

As the disease progresses, people affected with Parkinsons often develop difficulty:

  • Walking
  • Talking
  • With fine motor skills

Why You Shouldn’t Put Stock in a BMI Test

Posted: 08 Feb 2010 12:35 AM PST

A BMI or Body Mass Index test computes a measurement of your body composition based on your raw height and weight.  The advantage of this test is you get a quick general indicator of how fat you are compared to a standard height and weight calculation.  This allows you to easily scan a table of heights and weights and see whether or not you are classified as obese.

The problem with the BMI is it takes the individual out of the equation.  A person heavy on muscle has a good chance of registering as grossly obese because of their raw weight.  Also, some individuals simply have bigger body types making obese ratings unfair.  On the other end of the spectrum, some people will show as underweight when they are naturally slight.

BMI tests are interesting to see where you stand, but you can’t take much from them unless they match up with a more accurate test such as a body fat analysis.  Even if you show up as “normal” under a BMI, you may be in dire need of fitness.
