Frustrated with Olympics TV Coverage

Posted: 22 Feb 2010 08:57 PM PST

They happen every four years, every two if you take into account they now stagger the Summer Games with the Winter Games. The technology available to broadcast and cover the Olympics is greater now than it’s ever been. So why can’t I easily watch what I’m looking for when I want to catch some Olympic TV coverage.

I’ve got a couple of different complaints.

The first big issue was that I couldn’t find the USA vs. Canada hockey game televised last night. They built it up all week as much as possible, and then I go to watch it and it’s not on. I’m hearing updates about it on Facebook but can’t find it on the TV schedule.

That issue alerted me to something else. AT&T is a sponsor of the Olympic Games and I am a proud AT&T U-verse customer. They released an expansion of their "Multi-View" to help with coverage of the Olympics. Multi-view allows you to enjoy a 4-channel picture-in-picture function so you can keep from missing anything you want to watch. The problem there is that every time I’ve tried to use the Olympic multi-view, I’ve yet to see any Olympic coverage other than on the main channel I’m watching.

The other frustration I have with Olympics TV coverage is that we don’t see these sports covered hardly at all throughout the year. With cable networks with 100’s of channels, why can’t we see more of these non-mainstream sports covered through the year? Where’s Chris Anderson’s Long Tail of TV sports coverage?

And lastly, why can’t I watch curling on TV on my DVR? I’ve yet to see it covered anywhere except on online video. Perhaps I’m too busy.

Can You Sweat Out Toxins?

Posted: 22 Feb 2010 08:09 PM PST

Challenging exercise provides you with a buffet of benefits, but don’t think fitness can help you sweat out the toxins you get from the food you eat because even a heavy sweat only washes away a trace amount of toxins.  Many people striving for better health understandably would like to purify their bodies of mercury or pesticides that have accumulated in their bodies over time.  Unfortunately, purification is not as easy as heavy sweating.

In a twist, too much sweating can actually be bad for you because it can dehydrate you and hurt your kidneys which help filter toxins through the body.  Also important to the body’s natural purification is your liver.  To keep these two vital organs healthy, drink plenty of water, steer clear of heavy drug and alcohol usage, get regular exercise, consume ample fruits and vegetables, and try to eat less processed foods.

Loving the "BOSS" Button on NBC Online Olympics

Posted: 22 Feb 2010 08:06 PM PST

I’m a huge fan of the Olympics. I’ve got my AT&T U-verse DVR setup to record all the coverage that’s being shown on NBC, but sometimes that just doesn’t give me everything I’m looking for. I know I’m an odd-ball, but I actually enjoy watching the curling events and I’ve yet to see any coverage of that on the mainstream channel.

nbc-olympics-boss-button

Yesterday I missed the USA vs. Canada hockey game because it was being televised on MSNBC instead of NBC. I’ll probably be talking about my frustration with that in another post I’ll be writing later.

What I discovered today though as I was catching video highlights of the hockey game was something that I though was brilliant! I’m sure other websites have used and the NBCOlympics.com site isn’t the first, but I love their execution.

Within the controls of the video coverage of the events there’s a "BOSS" button you can click that will immediately display a blank Vista desktop with an empty Microsoft Excel spreadsheet displayed instead of the video so you’re not caught watching online video instead of getting that important work done.

Now, I think if they’d put some dummy data in that spreadsheet (like medal counts or something, event sport times) and would identify what operating system you’re using and display the appropriate desktop.

LT Released by San Diego

Posted: 22 Feb 2010 03:25 PM PST

After nine awesome seasons with the San Diego Chargers, LaDainian Tomlinson is now history. He was released today by the team. Chargers CEO Dean Spanos sat down with LT to tell him the bad news. According to YardBarker.com, Spanos said telling LT the news was “by far the most difficult thing I’ve ever had to do as an owner.”

In the NFL, however, records are only important when they are fresh. Despite that Tomlinson “ranks third all-time in the NFL with 153 touchdowns and eighth with 12,490 rushing yards” he last had an outstanding season in 2006. That’s too long by NFL standards.

Tomlinson is determined to play again for another team. At 30, he’s got the right amount of experience and youth to come back hard and improve a struggling team. Tomlinson said he definitely wants to win a Super Bowl, and would like to come back with a team that has a great quarterback in place. Hello, Lions, think you could use a little LT to go with your Stafford?

Cast of “Glee” to Sing at White House

Posted: 22 Feb 2010 02:54 PM PST

Well, if it's good enough for the Obama's it's certainly good enough for me! It looks as though the cast of Glee will be making their way over to the White House in the future. They will be there singing for the annual Easter celebration that takes place.

Interestingly enough, First Lady Michelle Obama and daughters Sasha and Malia are said to be in love with the show.

Well, I think it's a lot better than last year's Easter White House performer, which was Fergie. You can catch Glee when it returns from its hiatus on April 13th.

They must be extremely honored to be singing in front of the President and his family. I wonder what they'll sing!

“Endless Ocean: Blue World” On Wii

Posted: 22 Feb 2010 02:35 PM PST

Whether it's hitting the ski slopes or enjoying the relaxation of yoga, Nintendo always seems to find a way of letting you dive into exciting experiences.

Endless ocean_Blue World

Endless Ocean: Blue World is a continuation of the original Endless Ocean game. In the first one, the focus was on luxury and peacefulness, while this newer game focuses more on the adventure of exploring the ocean.

You'll get to experience life under the sea, taking a look at the variety of aquatic animals, and learning about their habitats and behavior.

You'll also be able to buy decorations for your island. In addition, you can buy coral to attract new fish. You'll also be able to monitor the health of the fish and take care of them when they're sick.

Dolphins are a useful component to the game as they can get you places faster and can also be taught new tricks.

Even cooler is that you'll also be able to explore shipwrecks and find treasure. Endless Ocean: Blue World is available on the Nintendo Wii today.

The MVP Discussion Just Got Interesting

Posted: 22 Feb 2010 07:56 AM PST

At the beginning of the 2009-2019 NBA season, LeBron James led the pack as far as MVP candidates were concerned. He seemed destined to repeat the honor in back-to-back seasons just as Steve Nash, Micheal Jordan, Tim Duncan, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Moses Malone, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Wilt Chamberlin, and Bill Russell had done in their illustrious careers.

But then, a little skinny/tall guy from the Oklahoma Thunder began what is now being considered one of the most incredible scoring streaks by a third-year player in all of NBA history.

Kevin Durant should be the 2009-2010 MVP.

Enter: Kevin Durant

Durant has accomplished something that no other active NBA has done, including King James. With a 32-point performance in last night’s win over the Minnesota Timberwolves, Durant has amassed a 28 game-streak of at least 25 points or more.

According to ESPN, Durant’s current streak is the longest since Jordan had 40 straight games of 25 or more points in the 1986-87 season.

You may argue that individual performance is only part of the MVP equation, and I agree. But considering the fact that the Thunder wouldn’t even be in playoff contention were it not for Durant and his consistent play, I’d say that he’s a perfect MVP candidate.

In fact, Kevin Durant is my overall 2009-2010 MVP pick.

Low Testosterone After Male Cancer

Posted: 22 Feb 2010 04:51 AM PST

Men who survive treatment for male cancers may be left with suboptimal levels of the hormone testosterone, leading to a lower quality of life, say researchers in the United Kingdom. To counter this, they suggest that young men who are diagnosed with testosterone insufficiency after cancer would likely benefit from testosterone supplements.

Researchers studied 389 young men, 176 of whom had been successfully treated for a male cancer. The researchers were looking for a connection between between testosterone levels, quality of life, self-esteem, fatigue and sexual function. The results of the study were published recently in the medical journal, Cancer.

It turned out that young men who survived male cancers did have a reduction in their quality of life, lower energy levels and a lower quality of sexual function, but this was worsened in men who had lower levels of testosterone. This led the researchers to believe that administering hormone replacement therapy could improve the issues that may be problems for young men in this situation.

More research will follow.

What to Eat After a Workout

Posted: 21 Feb 2010 09:07 PM PST

After you’ve finished your cardio and weight training, it’s time to eat. The hard part is over, but just as important you must replenish your body with nutrition so it can recover after your challenging exercise.

The best foods will be high in protein and carbs, but very low in fat. The only thing fat does for you after a workout is slow your absorption rate down. The number of calories you eat should come to roughly half the number you burned. Ideally you will eat within 45 minutes after stopping.

Weightlifters should particularly strive to consume rapidly absorbing protein shakes.

Some good food combinations could be:

  • eggs and toast
  • cereal
  • milk
  • low fat ice cream
  • fruit and tuna
  • cottage cheese and fruit

Remember not to overeat after a workout.  This can be easy to do as mentally you’re happy with yourself and you will probably be hungry.  However, keep your after workout meal in the mind frame of sustaining your body and not indulging your tastes.
