In-the-Black Berry Mojito

Posted: 07 Feb 2010 09:03 PM PST

Before you know it, the warm weather will be here. If you are looking for a refreshing cocktail for your spring parties and backyard barbecues, check out this recipe for the In-the-Black Berry Mojito from The Kitchens of The Food Channel.

A wonderfully light, slightly tart, and refreshing rum drink flavored with mint, lime juice, and fresh blackberries. The birthplace of the mojito is Cuba, so it makes perfect sense that the cocktail is prized around the world for its ability to tame tropical days and nights.

The New Orleans Saints: Super Bowl Champions

Posted: 07 Feb 2010 08:34 PM PST

Fans of the New Orleans Saints who have witnessed what they’ve witnessed over the years never thought they’d see this day. But they have arrived. The New Orleans Saints are Super Bowl champions. The laughing stock of the NFL for decades is now at the top of the football playing world.

Super Bowl MVP Drew Brees dominated on his way to 288 passing yards and two touchdowns passes. He connected an astonishing 32-of-38 passes and didn’t turn the ball over. With his team down by a point with under six minutes remaining, Brees hit Jeremy Shockey to give the Saints a lead they would never relinquish on their way to a 31-17 victory.

Peyton Manning played well — but not well enough. He had 333 passing yards and a touchdown. However he had one big mistake — an interception with three minutes remaining that was returned for a touchdown by Tracy Porter.

After beginning the season 13-0, the Saints struggled down the stretch. They lost their final three games to finish the regular season 13-3. But once the playoffs began, they turned it up a notch. They beat Kurt Warner and the Arizona Cardinals 45-14. The Saints then defeated Brett Favre and the Minnesota Vikings 31-28. Once on the biggest stage of them all, New Orleans and their beloved Saints came away victorious.

New “Robin Hood” Trailer

Posted: 07 Feb 2010 06:50 PM PST

Robin Hood will hit theaters on May 14, 2010.  I won't lie to you.  My first thought when I saw the trailer for this film was that the world really doesn't need another movie about Robin Hood.  I think Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves was good enough to buy us another 10-20 years without another remake but I guess Ridley Scott disagrees with me.

The director is collaborating again with Russell Crowe with whom he had incredible success with Gladiator.  Now, they are taking this legendary tale back to the big screen with a decidedly darker feel to a familiar story.

It's unclear whether it will really be called Robin Hood but I do know that it's going to tell the life of one of mythology's most celebrated archers who is being relieved from his service in King Richard’s army against the French.  After Richard dies, Robin heads to Nottingham where he falls for Lady Marion (Cate Blanchett), a spirited widow who is suspicious of Robin's motives.

The town is suffering from corruption and is heavily oppressed by their nasty sheriff.  In an effort to win over Marion, Robin "assembles a gang whose lethal mercenary skills are matched only by its appetite for life."

Coca-Cola’s Super Bowl Commercials

Posted: 07 Feb 2010 04:29 PM PST

I'm sitting here enjoying the Super Bowl (Go Saints!) and I got an email about Coca-Cola's commercials from tonight's big game.   Put down your hot wings and beer for a second and enjoy.

This first one is called "Sleepwalker."  In the ad, a man leaves his tent and sleepwalks his way across Africa.  As you can imagine, it's easy to get parched out in the desert so it's a good thing he had some ice-cold Coca-Cola to quench his thirst!

In this second ad, "Hard Times" you'll spot some familiar faces from The Simpsons but there's one surprise – greedy billionaire, C. Montgomery Burns, has fallen on hard times.  Fortunately, a little Coca-Cola and some good friends can make all the difference.

Xbox 360 Power Pyramid Charger

Posted: 07 Feb 2010 02:16 PM PST

I've got a few consoles kicking around my house and, since I'm environmentally conscious, I prefer to use rechargeable batteries for my controllers.  Some of the recharging stations are pretty bulky and when you've got more than one gaming device, it can become a bit cumbersome (and ugly).

When I saw the KONNET Power Pyramid charging station for the Microsoft XBox 360 wireless controllers, I have to admit that I thought it looked pretty cool.

Here's some product details from Amazon:

  • Charging and Storage Dock for your Game Controllers.
  • Charge 4 x Controllers simultaneously (XBox 360)
  • Powered by AC Adaptor (Included) without connection with Game Console.
  • LED Indication for Charging Status
  • Stylish Docking to store your controller while not in use.

I just like that it looks cool and it is designed to use space efficiently.

Taylor Lautner Cast as “Stretch Armstrong”

Posted: 07 Feb 2010 01:21 PM PST

I can see how this would work.  Twilight star, Taylor Lautner, has been cast in the title role of Stretch Armstrong.  The film is slated for a 2012 release and will be in 3D.

Universal Pictures said: “In the past two years, Taylor has emerged as a real star at the global box office. He brings the perfect balance of energy and athleticism to the role of an unlikely super hero with a fantastic super power.  We couldn’t be more pleased that he has agreed to be our Stretch.”

Taylor is one busy guy!  He's got the last two Twilight sequels to finish and he's going to star in the title role in Max Steel so we're going to be seeing a lot of him!

In case you're not familiar with Stretch, he's a rubbery superhero based on a Hasbro action figure.  Here's a commercial from back in the day to help jog your memory!

Why You Should Have Your Workout Evaluated

Posted: 07 Feb 2010 10:07 AM PST

Now that you’re exercising on a regular basis, you are on the fast track to fitness.  Once you are 3 or 4 months into a consistent and legitimate (you’re really exercising when you workout) exercise, you will start to get a good feel for exercises, reps, rest and your coordination for movements.  However, there are still some things you will need to learn as you continue forward.  This is why having an honest evaluation of your workout from a third party is huge in your development.

Ideally you will have a trainer (or maybe even two trainers) give you an opinion on what you’re doing right and wrong.  If possible, you should have them follow you through an entire workout so they can correct and critique as you go along.

The underlying concept is you want to find out several questions in a report card style manner.

  • What muscles are you neglecting
  • Whether or not you have perfect form
  • What other exercises you should do
  • Whether you rest too much between sets
  • Whether the weight is too light or too heavy
  • If you’re running properly
  • Whether you have enough hydration
  • Whether you’re working both sides of your body evenly
  • Whether or not you grip the bar right
  • And more

As you can see from this still incomplete list, there are many facets of your workout that you should be aware of.  For your evaluation you should seek out an expert who will be honest and direct with criticism of your workout – and criticism is a good thing.  This is the whole point to having an evaluation.  If you’re running perfect on all cylinders, that’s fantastic but you need someone with superior knowledge that will tell you when you’re doing something wrong.  You don’t want someone that tries to sugar coat what you’re doing wrong or won’t directly tell you when something isn’t right.

Everyone – no matter how experienced or knowledgeable they are – should have their workout evaluated.  You never know what insight another set of eyes can bring.

Hockey Ref Dies After Being Hit With Puck

Posted: 07 Feb 2010 07:54 AM PST

When you think of hockey, you usually think of fights. In fact, that’s how most of the players get injured. But a very sad story out of Sweden reveals that a ref has died after being hit with a puck. He was just 62.

Fox Sports says Roland Hedberg was hit in the “hit in the back of the head by a puck during a junior game.” He was hit and then fell to the ice. Within ten seconds, he was attended to by someone who happened to be an off-duty ambulance driver, but to no avail.

Stories like this make you have a real appreciation for how dangerous sports really are.

Management Tips: Change to Survive

Posted: 07 Feb 2010 01:22 AM PST

To stay in business in today’s economy, you must undergo changes to survive. Certain industries change more often and faster than others, while some stay more fixed. However, all businesses must change at times to stay competitive.

Business Meeting

Lead by Example
Business executives and managers must be willing to change themselves, if they expect employees to change. Be prepared to make changes yourself and be able explain to your employees why those changes are necessary.

Keep Your Employees in the Loop
Nothing causes dissension faster than employees thinking they are being deceived. As soon as possible, inform employees of change initiatives and their part in the change processes.

Get Your Supervisors on the Same Page
Your supervisors must believe in the vision of change, if you expect them to pass on the vision to their workers. If your supervisors prove to be combatants against the change, you should consider getting new supervisors.

Stay Up-to-Date With Technology
Do not let your business fall behind because you don’t make changes to the latest technology. Use technology to automate repetitive tasks, freeing up employees to do more problem solving.

Keep an Eye on the Competition
Learn from both the success and the mistakes others are making. Doing so helps you avoid common pitfalls and come across tried and trued success. Do not copy specifics, but learning by observing helps evade the hassles of trial and error.

Stay Focused on the Main Goal
Do not get lost in the specifics of the everyday progression. Instead, stay focused on the ultimate goal and direct your energy toward achieving it. Keep in mind what the most vital aspects of the goal are and how to best tackle each problem that arises.

Don’t Be Afraid of Dreaming Big
Just because something has always been done one way does not mean that it has to be that way. Do not be afraid to broaden your horizons and try new avenues to successful. Innovation breeds excitement for everyone involved.
