“Mission: Impossible IV” Coming in 2011

Posted: 10 Feb 2010 08:51 PM PST

Ethan Hunt is alive and kicking.  The character will be brought back to life by Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible IV which is expected to hit theaters over the Memorial Day weekend in 2011.  Say what you want about Tom Cruise's religious choices – I still love him as an actor and I'm hoping this newest installment in the franchise is the best yet.

The film is being produced by J.J. Abrams who is on a real hot streak after enjoying great success with Cloverfield and the new Star Trek movie.

While this is all interesting, the most intriguing part of this development is the fact that Cruise will be working with Paramount on the film.  The production company cut ties with him in 2006 in a dramatic way that basically left the actor out in the cold.  Maybe this is the olive branch that will help get Cruise's career back on track.

Does a Pac-10 Network Make Sense?

Posted: 10 Feb 2010 08:46 PM PST

This week, the Pac-10 announced that Kevin Weiberg would be taking over as deputy commission effective on April 12. Weiberg was first commission of the Big 12, but left there in 2007 to work for the Big Ten Network. This all means that the Pac-10 could see its own television network developed over the next few years.

The financial potential is enticing. Currently, the league as television deals with broadcast networks, and they made around $43 million in 2008 from those deals. As a comparison, the Big Ten Network made $66 million that same year, and the league also made money from network deals for specific games.

USC and other colleges in the Pac-10 are popular even when performance is down, so a network is a great option. Image: Newscom

More money isn’t the only advantage to starting a television network. This is also a great way to promote the Pac-10 brand, and it allows more student athletes to be recognized, even if they aren’t playing at a popular school or in a popular sport. Every Saturday, a number of football games are shown on ESPN and other channels, and the Pac-10 certainly takes up a large percentage of that real estate…but there are many more options with a network fully devoted to Pac-10 games.

Weiberg was hired by Pac-10 commish Larry Scott, who has been vocal about wanting the league to have its own network. Predecessor Tom Hansen also agreed, so hopefully the other powers that be won’t stand in the way of this happening.

There’s a lot to consider. You can’t just start a television network overnight, and there is a large investment required to make it happen. But I do think that this is a good options for this conference. They have a huge fanbase across the country, and even when their schools aren’t performing well, everyone follows their programs.

Heavy Rain Demo Out Tomorrow on PSN!

Posted: 10 Feb 2010 05:54 PM PST

If I were more adept at doing my happy dance whilst typing then I would be typing this and dancing all at the same time.

Alas, I type best when my butt is firmly planted on some surface so you’ll just have to imagine me dancing for joy about the wonderful fact that Heavy Rain’s demo will be available on the PSN tomorrow.

YAY! [insert happy dance]

I’ve been following this freakin’ game since it was first announced way back in 2006 or whenever it was. Since I was/am such a HUGE fan of Indigo Prophecy [except for the ending], the news that Quantic Dream was coming out with another game, but for the PS3, my little heart went all pitter patter and stuff.

Though there’s no word as to exactly what time the two chapter Heavy Rain demo will become available tomorrow but I do know it will be tomorrow - the Playstation blog told me so.

I’ll give you one guess what my day is going to consist of tomorrow.

Belkin’s new laptop pad is curved

Posted: 10 Feb 2010 01:12 PM PST

Popular PC accessory maker Belkin has just released a new version of its Laptop Cooling Pad. The twist? This one is curved, or in Belkin’s words, “wave shaped.”

As you can see in the photo, the new Belkin Cooling Pad is designed with a patented, unique shape, intended to keep your legs nice and cool and your laptop from overheating. The built-in, USB powered fan has been positioned right in the middle of the pad, which Belkin says optimizes circulation to let hot air flow up and away. The USB cord even has its own compartment for when it’s not in use.

The Laptop Cooling pad fits laptops up to 15.4″ and will be available this April for $29.99.

Desmosedici GP10 is Ready to Roar

Posted: 10 Feb 2010 12:26 PM PST

The 2010 MotoGP season is in preparation and the teams and racers are making sure everything they need to do, they do, before things get under way in a few weeks. You can bet all the teams and racers are working on the bikes to make sure they are ready and trying to make the adjustments they feel they need to make to improve their bikes. It has been a long winter for many of the teams and they’re certainly glad to be approaching the start of another season, but still they’re just as wishing they had more time to get ready. There’s only so much time before the season starts, though, and no matter what they wish, the bikes will need to be ready to go soon.

Team Ducati is ready to win!

Casey Stoner and Nicky Hayden have been all winter working on the Desmosedici GP10 prototype bike along with the engineers and last week they were out on the track at Sepang taking the bikes through a few runs. Things appeared to be going good with the work on the new bikes, but then they keep things pretty close to the vest most times and information is often hard to come locate. The bikes did look pretty good and the racers looked pretty comfortable on the bikes as they took them around the track. This test session will be important to the overall development of the bikes and along with other test sessions, like the one in Malaysia later in the month, will help to determine just how prepared the riders and bikes will be for the start of the 2010 MotoGP Premier Class Season.

Apparently, the bikes went through some serious changes during the off season and the engineers need as much data on the performance of the bikes as they can get. A new engine has apparently been added to this prototype and this is always going to be a difficult thing to balance and get working as the engineers envision. A high-powered engine like the one introduced with these new prototypes is going to require expertise and knowledge that the normal engine mechanic just isn’t going to possess and even if you have the education, knowledge and expertise, the task is still a difficult one. This is only one of several changes that were made to the bikes, so they obviously have a lot to work on and this is probably why they were so focused on the task at hand.

2010 should be another great year for MotoGP and Valentino Rossi will once again be the racer most expect to win after the dust settles. Still, there are lots of racers who have the talent, bike and desire to win and it will be hard for Valentino to repeat, once again. Of course, we have said this seven times, at least, and Valentino just shows up year after year and does what he does best, win with style and class.

RB6 Unveiled for First Time

Posted: 10 Feb 2010 12:00 PM PST

The 2010 Formula One season is about to get underway shortly and one of the most eagerly anticipated parts of the preseason routine has been entertaining the fans in the meantime. The always popular unveiling of the cars that will be doing the racing in 2010 has begun, once again, and the latest car to be unveiled is the Red Bull entry.

Can the Toyota's beat the Red Bull offerings?

The RB6 was seen for the first time on the track at Jerez on Wednesday and the number of fans that showed up to see the new race car was amazing. Apparently, lots of fans have been waiting to see what the RB6 looks like and they all showed up to take a look. They weren’t disappointed either as the RB6 was looking amazing in its new colors and appearance as the fans gathered around the car to take a first look. The smiles of the fans and racing industry professionals on hand were bright as they took everything in and were introduced to the RB6 for the first time.

The race car is a creation of Adrian Newey, an engineering genius of the sport of racing that has had significant success at creating fast and agile race cars that can win. Hopefully, his genius has created a better car than the one that was on the track for Red Bull last year and if that happens it should be quite a year. Red Bull had a pretty good year and if they do any better than its going to be a tough year for their competition and we could see a new Formula One Champion in 2010. This may seem like a dream to some Formula One fans, but the car was almost fast enough to win last year and the drivers were second to few on the track. If the team is able to improve, it will be an amazing year for all involved, and maybe one for the record books.

The drivers for Red Bull will once again be Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel, two top-level racers who have been running back in the pack the last few years, but threatening to break through. They have a lot of tough competition on the track this year, what with Michael Schumacher, Lewis Hamilton and 2009 Formula One Champion, Jenson Button to deal with. Still, they have the talent and just need the car to give them the ability they need in their car to compete on an even level, maybe give the big boys a scare, and even win it all in 2010.

One thing is for sure, they certainly aren’t willing to just say they have no chance, and feel they have as good a chance to win as any driver on the track, if things line up just right. They’ll be chomping at the bit to get out there and see what they can do on the track and see if the big boys are still as fast as they remember. They aren’t expected to win it all by most and this in itself takes lots of pressure off of the team and drivers and they should be loose and ready to give it their all, once the racing starts.

Is There A Better Rivalry In Sports?

Posted: 10 Feb 2010 11:56 AM PST

When it comes to Duke vs. North Carolina, you have to wonder — is there a better rivalry in sports?

Separated by eight measly miles, otherwise known as Tobacco Road, the Duke/North Carolina match-up has been captivating fans across the nation for decades. You don’t have to live in Durham or Chapel Hill in order to understand what this college basketball rivalry is all about. All you have to do is turn on ESPN and watch the game unfold.

What other rivalry in sports matches this kind of competitive spirit and intensity? Pro football rivalries change over time, same with pro basketball. But this rivalry has endured the test of time.

In fact, a poll conducted by ESPN in 2000 ranked the Duke/North Carolina rivalry as the third greatest North American sports rivalry of all time. It’s even been the subject of many best-selling books, including To Hate Like This Is to Be Happy Forever by Will Blythe and Blue Blood by Art Chansky.

There have been many memorable games between these two outstanding college basketball programs over the years, and here’s a look at some of them:

NASCAR Preparing to Roar

Posted: 10 Feb 2010 11:19 AM PST

You can feel the energy rising as we move closer to the dropping of the flag on the 2010 Sprint Cup Series. The fans, teams, and racers are starting to smile brighter as they walk around the track, which is a sure sign that things are about to get under way soon and a lot of tension and built up energy is about to be released. It has been three months since we heard the roar of a Sprint Cup Series race car as it heads down the track at full speed and I for one can’t wait for the drop of the flag.

Get ready, get set! It's time to race!

This week the boys have been out on the track of Daytona International Speedway preparing for the start of the season. About fifty or so cars were present to qualify, practice and prepare for the upcoming Gatorade Duel 150-mile qualifier that is set for Thursday. The racers will soon take part in the Budweiser Shootout and the first Nationwide Series race will start, so things are starting to build toward the start of the season for all the racers and teams.

The teams will collect a mountain of data during this time that they’ll try to use to improve the cars and their chances of winning during the 2010 season, but it might all be for nothing, as the races are basically a roll of the dice for most. Still, they do need to collect the data and make the changes that are indicated, for it could be the difference, despite the element of chance in the races. There are so many aspects that are involved in winning a NASCAR race, you’ll need a computer to have a chance of calculating them and making a useful prediction and even then I doubt you would have much sucesss. There are just to many variables involved and anything can happen at anytime on the track, so good luck with that.

The racers and teams will just have to show up and do the job they normally do and hope that luck evens out through the season for them. Lady Luck can be a friend or a foe, the choice is usually her’s, all you can really do is plan for the worst and hope for the best. Hopefully, by planning for the worst to happen, you can be ready to respond when Lady Luck turns against you and come out of the affair with a chance to still win.

Either way, the 2010 Sprint Cup Series season and Nationwide Series season are close to starting and this is what we have been waiting for. It should be a great year for the fans and NASCAR as a whole and hopefully the economy recovers, which should make for a better year for all.

Tim Tebow’s Possible NFL Destinations

Posted: 10 Feb 2010 11:14 AM PST

While Tim Tebow surely won’t go in the first round of the 2010 NFL Draft, he’s undoubtedly the most discussed player in the entire draft. Some scouts say Tebow has the toughness and will to forge an NFL career, while other scouts say that Tebow’s football playing career is over.

Where will arguably the best player in college football history end up in the NFL? Here are some likely Tim Tebow destinations:

Jacksonville Jaguars
Tim Tebow is from Jacksonville and the Jaguars are struggling to draw fans. That alone makes it a likely fit. Add in the shaky QB play on the Jaguars and there might be a riot if the team doesn’t select the local hero.

New England Patriots
The Patriots are looking to get tougher on the offensive side of the football. Tebow can add that toughness. Plus, the Patriots like players who can play multiple positions. With Tebow’s skillset, he could be a multi-purpose player at the NFL level.

Cleveland Browns
The Browns tinkered with the wildcat a bit last season. Plugging Tebow in as the wildcat specialist makes a bit of sense. For a team that struggled so much on offense last year, Tebow can’t hurt.

Miami Dolphins
Speaking of the wildcat, the Dolphins are the master of the wildcat. If they think Tebow can dominate in wildcat formations, they wouldn’t hesitate in drafting him.

Monta Ellis Injury Update – Left Knee

Posted: 10 Feb 2010 11:02 AM PST

Few things have gone right for the Golden State Warriors this season. However, Monta Ellis’ play has been one of the few bright spots. The 24-year-old is having a career season and is earning every cent of his $11 million salary. But Ellis may be out until after the All-Star break due to a mild left knee sprain.

On the season, Ellis is averaging 26.2 points, 5.4 assists and 4.2 rebounds. He’s shooting 46.2% from the floor and 32.9% on three-pointers. Ellis is also third in the league in steals at 2.19 swipes per game.

Ellis was injured in Monday’s game against the Dallas Mavericks. The Warriors have one more game before the All-Star break — against the Los Angeles Clippers on Wednesday.

There’s also a chance that Ellis never plays for the Warriors again. His name has come up in trade rumors, with many teams interested in trading for the talented guard from Mississippi. That said, team insiders insist that a trade involving Ellis is unlikely.
