You Should Read Twitter Marketing for Dummies

Posted: 18 Feb 2010 09:16 PM PST

If I had to guess, I’d bet a pretty penny that you’re probably a twitter user right at this minute. You’ve been using it for awhile, you realize it’s helpful and more than other people realize it is.

twitter-marketing-for-dummies

If you’re reading this and you’re not on twitter, I think the next chance is that you may be involved in business and you’re wondering how you can use twitter and all these other social media tools to improve your business, your personal brand or to just get your message out to more people.

If that’s the case, then you should pick up a copy of my friend Kyle Lacy’s book, "Twitter Marketing for Dummies". The book takes all those things that are great about all the other for Dummies books and brings you up to speed and above average on twitter.

When you pick up your copy of the book, you’ll be reading chapters on getting started, planning your strategy (yeah, that’s important), measuring your success, reaching customers, and increasing sales. If learning what to do isn’t enough, Kyle even covers a section on all the great tools available to make using twitter and harnessing its power even easier.

I’ll tell you this once, open a new tab in your browser and go purchase a copy of this Twitter Marketing for Dummies by Kyle Lacy. I’ll guarantee you, you’ll learn something that will more than pay for the cost of the book and your time invested in reading it. After all, the price of being a dummy can be far greater.

The New 2010 Star Wars AT-AT Toy

Posted: 18 Feb 2010 06:54 PM PST

Growing up I was (and still am) a huge STAR WARS toy fan. I absolutely love collecting STAR WARS toys and playing with them. I remember one year around Christmas a friend of mine was going to sell me his extremely beat-up AT-AT for $8. His little brother had even taken a permanent marker and colored all over it. But I HAD to have it! Little did I know that my mom had already purchased the limited edition version of the AT-AT toy brand new for me as a Christmas present.

When I finally convinced her I couldn’t wait for this junked out one with missing pieces from my friend, she gave me the $8 and took the brand new one back to the store. Yep, that taught me a valuable lesson that Christmas.

Well, here’s the latest version of the AT-AT toy that was unveiled at the 2010 New York Toy Fair. It’s like a miniature prop from the move it’s so detailed and realistic.

Thursday out on the Track at Jerez

Posted: 18 Feb 2010 02:03 PM PST

The BMW Sauber offering was out on the track Thursday

The boys of Formula One were out on the track of Jerez Thursday taking their cars around the track in an attempt to get the kinks out and try to get everything tuned in with the cars before the start of the 2010 Formula One season. The eleven teams that showed up for the four days of testing this week have had to contend with Mother Nature the whole week, which has made things a little spotty at times as far as the action on the track goes. Thursdays session saw Reubens Barrichello have the best time of the racers that were able to get out on the track, with a time of 1:27.145 seconds in the FW32. Reubens looked pretty good on Thursday, so they must have made a few changes since Wednesday that improved the car a bit. His time was just under seven tenths of a second in front of his nearest competitor of the day, Vitaly Petrov in his Renault.

The times that were registered on Thursday were quite a bit slower than the times on Wednesday, but the rain certainly had a lot to do with the times. It continued to rain throughout the day, and the racers and cars weren’t out on the track long, before the rain would start again. This meant that nobody really got many laps in and none of the cars were on the track for anywhere near 100 laps. The weather certainly slowed things down, but the teams and racers still got some work done on getting the cars ready, despite Mother Nature trying to frown on the occasion.

Vettel had the third best time of the day on Thursday, after recording the fastest time of the day on Wednesday, but seemed to struggle with the wet track. He still managed to stay out there to try to get a feel for the car in wet conditons, which should help the technicians later in the year on wet tracks. They won’t run often in wet conditions and the majority of their testing will be done in dry conditions, as will the racing, but doing a few laps on a wet track has its uses as well. Nico Rosberg had the fourth best time of the day in his Mercedes, Felipe Massa had the fifth best time in his Ferrari, while Pedro de la Rossa had the sixth best time on limited laps for BMW Sauber.

Cowboys Fan Targeted in Philly Airport

Posted: 18 Feb 2010 01:47 PM PST

You’ve heard of racial profiling, but what about jersey profiling? Specifically, what about wearing one team’s jersey while traveling through the city of another team? That’s what Alyson Galen, a Dallas fan, claims happened to her when she walked through the Philly Airport.

She had on a Jason Witten jersey (first of all, she should have had Romo’s pink jersey on, then they might have thought she was Jessica Simpson and left her alone.) But no, instead she was asked to step aside by the airport screener and asked, “how’s it feel to be a Cowboys fan in Philadelphia.” Here’s a video with Galen describing her ordeal.

I can’t help wondering if all this could have been avoided by a better Philly season! After all, then the poor airport folks would have taken pity on a Cowboy’s fan. You think?

Jamie McMurray Wins Daytona 500

Posted: 18 Feb 2010 01:16 PM PST

The ghosts of the greats were probably on hand Sunday with the 52nd running of the iconic Daytona 500 happening in Daytona Beach, Florida. They were treated to a finish that nobody but Jamie McMurray, his team and certainly his friends and family thought was possible, as Jamie held off Dale Earnhardt Junior to make it over the line .119 seconds ahead of Dale. This was certainly a surprise to me and millions of fans, but we must have started to believe as the race neared the last lap and Jamie was still in position to win. After the race it was still kind of surreal and Jamie could be seen trying to hold back the emotion of the moment and his achievement. You could see a tear or two forming near his eyes as he realised that he had in fact done it and one could hardly blame him if he had screamed his victory cry and danced a gig.

Jamie McMurray probably sending his mother a picture of him on The Late Show With David Letterman

After all, very few racers ever get to experience the moments that Jamie McMurray was going through after his win of the Daytona 500, and celebration is definitely in order during the biggest moment of your career. Jamie had a very tough year on the track and although he did win once, he would probably be the first to tell you he was a little worried about his prospects coming into 2010. This win will certainly help his confidence and prospects for continuing to find a ride in the future, despite the current financial problems in NASCAR. He can go to the next race with a little momentum that he had trouble achieving last year and this in itself is good news when you think you’re struggling.

Jamie’s good luck and fortune of course is in contrast to the problems that Daytona International Speedway officials experienced on Sunday as twice the race had to be stopped due to problems with the track. There are a lot of racing industry professionals looking at officials at the track and asking questions that have the officials feeling a little uncomfortable, but this is to be expected. How can you defend the track coming apart during what’s suppose to be one of the premier races in the industry? This kind of thing has happened before, but it’s very embarressing for sure and something that officials at the track want to make sure doesn’t happen very often. They’re probably prowling around the track in a bad mood this morning and one could hardly blame them considering the time and money that goes into keeping a race track in top condition.

Eubanks and Melendez Leaving “Leno Show”

Posted: 18 Feb 2010 11:00 AM PST

It's no secret that there has been a lot of moving around over at The Tonight Show.  Now, it looks like even bandleader Kevin Eubanks will be leaving the show. He will definitely be there when the show premieres on March 1st with Jay Leno.

However, the guitarist is currently in negotiations with NBC to leave the show. No word yet on when he will be making the exit.

Also, making a departure is John Melendez, who provided the voice commentary, however he will still write for The Tonight Show.

I wonder what happened. Maybe it was just too much change for them.  It's hard to imagine the show without either of them.

“GoodFellas” 20th Anniversary Release

Posted: 18 Feb 2010 11:00 AM PST

Believe it or not, it has been 20 years since the release of the film, GoodFellas, claimed by many to be one of the best mob movies. The film was directed by Martin Scorsese and is based on a book Goodfellas_cover by Nicholas Pileggi called Wiseguy.

The film has an all-star cast including Robert De Niro, Ray Liotta, Joe Pesci, Paul Sorvino and Lorraine Bracco. The movie fallows the life of Henry Hill (Liotta), who moves his way up in the mob business.

Here's a fun little fact: GoodFellas actually has the ninth highest count of "F"-Words with about 300 F-bombs dropped. Wow.

If you're interested in buying the 20th Anniversary Blu-ray, here's what you'll get:

  • A 34-page digibook filled with pictures and facts
  • Two commentaries and three featurettes
  • Feature-length documentary Public Enemies: The Golden Age of the Gangster Film

It's crazy that it's been 20 years since it's release. Any of you planning on buying the 20th anniversary edition?

What Trades Are Going Down Before Deadline?

Posted: 18 Feb 2010 10:41 AM PST

It’s D-day in the NBA. Any trades that are going to go down before the deadline need to happen before 3 p.m. today.

Here’s what’s happening around the league, according to ESPN.com:

• The Milwaukee Bucks have agreed to trade Jodie Meeks, Francisco Elson and a second-round draft pick to the Philadelphia 76ers for Primoz Brezec and Royal Ivey.  This is a better deal for the 76ers than the Bucks.

• The New York Knicks have possibly made a deal with the Boston Celtics,  which will send Nate Robinson and an unnamed player to the Celtics in return for Eddie House, J.R. Giddens and Bill Walker. Is Robinson really worth it?

• The Phoenix Suns have yet to finalize a trade for Amare Stoudemire with any team. Personally, I think they are going to keep him instead.

Tracy McGrady's trade wish come true.

Tracy McGrady is finally headed to the New York Knicks via a three-way deal between the Sacramento Kings, the Knicks and the Houston Rockets. The deal also sends Kevin Martin to the Rockets.

We already know that the Cleveland Cavaliers picked up Antawn Jamison, and I don’t think we’ll see any other major moves. With less than two hours to go before deadline, any last minute deals need to happen now.

Pipes and Cigars Hard on Lungs

Posted: 18 Feb 2010 06:03 AM PST

Men who smoke pipes and/or cigars are not immune to lung disease, as they may think. While it is known that pipe and cigar smoking can increase your risk of oral cancers and that cigarette smoking causes lung cancer and other respiratory illnesses, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (emphysema and chronic bronchitis), not much has been known about the association between COPD and pipe and cigar smoking.

According to this CBC news article, Cigar, pipe smoking damages lungs, a study that looked at 3,528 people found that people who smoked pipes or cigars had a three times higher chance of having impaired air flow than those who didn’t smoke at all. And 21% of people who smoked cigarettes in addition to pipes and/or cigars had blocked airways. The findings of the study were published in the most recent issue of the Annals of Internal Medicine.

What is at issue here is that pipe and cigar smokers don’t usually inhale the smoke, so they often feel that their type of smoking is safer and less likely to cause lung problems. Studies like this show that this isn’t entirely correct.
