What If… the Windows Were Closed? Part 2 Posted: 31 Jan 2010 08:58 PM PST Here I follow-up on my last post about what our lives would be like without Windows. Initial reactions would be a world full of rainbows and butterflies, but everything might not be as great as you would expect. Significant changes in developer tools: Here’s an area where I think Microsoft does good work. The amount of resources I have available to me to both use and learn Microsoft applications and developer more solutions on the Windows platform. Similar to the changes with client applications, there would be changes to developer expectations as well. This impact would probably be less those with the evolving standards of other development platforms and languages. Hardware changes: This one I’m not so sure about. Although their is something to be said for knowing that if you develop hardware to work with a PC system, there’s at least a known economy of scale available. The article states there would need to be another major player that would arise to standardize hardware needs again. I’m not so sure that would be Apple by any means. I’m sure there will be plenty of disagreement with this article because there were plenty of comments on the PC World article as well. I’m very eager to hear what our readers have to say and look forward to bouncing ideas off each other in the comments. Blast away! Post from: EveryJoe What If… the Windows Were Closed? Part 2 |
What If… the Windows Were Closed? Posted: 31 Jan 2010 08:54 PM PST I’ve been reading an interesting article on the PC World website titled "What Would Life Be like Without Windows". I’ll admit, I’m a fan of Microsoft. Don’t jump to conclusions though, I think there are plenty of areas for them to work harder and deliver a better product to their users. Of course there’s the initial knee-jerk reaction that life would be fantastic without this giant monolithic software elephant in the room. After all, everything they make is crap and they strong-arm competition and their business partners to do what they want. Right? It’s not that easy, the article discusses these potential impacts to the industry around us and our everyday lives changing because of that change to the industry. Unexpected results with client applications: Except for the fairly recent changes in the Office user interface, most Windows applications share a familiar if not very similar interface with other Windows applications. With the failure of Microsoft, people would need to start learning a much wider variety of user-interfaces. Stay tuned and read my follow-up to this post with some more impacts of a world without Windows. Post from: EveryJoe What If… the Windows Were Closed? |
Posted: 31 Jan 2010 08:54 PM PST In the old mall in my hometown, we had one arcade. The kind of arcade that took tokens instead of coins and as a reward, you won tickets which The big draw for the arcade was a Street Fighter game and I want to say it was the original Street Fighter but couldn’t be 100% sure if I did. I was young…I’m talking seven and I wanted more than anything to be good at that game. I would stand behind the junior high guys and watch their every move confident in the knowledge I was learning via osmosis. Add THAT to the laundry list of gaming accomplishments that were not to be. Now, I don’t know how many years later because I’m lazy, we have the release of SUPER Street Fighter IV – because apparently without the super you wouldn’t accept its greatness. And in addition to the pretty pictures, I also bring to you a video. Moving pictures! The game is coming out for the PS3 and 360 and should hit Spring 2010. Images/Capcom Post from: EveryJoe |

Surprise! Mass Effect 2 is a HUGE Hit! Posted: 31 Jan 2010 08:16 PM PST Since I am such a die hard PS3 fangirl, even I find my interest in Mass Effect 2 to be a bit strange. I can’t play the game and maybe that’s why I want to SO DAMN BAD? If you listen to the die hard Mass Effect fanboys and girls, I just don’t know what I’m missing. But I DO know what I’m missing. Really. I know! Quit telling me what an amazing game it is because I can’t play it and all I can do is drool over the pretty, pretty pictures. Maybe one of these days I’ll borrow someone’s 360 and then Mass Effect 2 will be mine! All mine! OK. So the truth of the matter is I don’t know anyone with a 360 who would let me borrow their system. Assholes. And the WHOLE POINT of this is that Mass Effect has sold over 2 million units. In one week. And the pretty pictures. Don’t forget about the pictures. Images/EA Post from: EveryJoe Surprise! AT&T U-Verse Winter Olympics Multi-View Posted: 31 Jan 2010 08:09 PM PST One of my absolute favorite television events is starting next month! It’s the winter Olympics and this year they’re in Vancouver, Canada. NBC is covering the games which is fine with me because I’ve always liked Bob Costas for sports commentary. I think I may be looking forward to this years broadcast of the games more than ever because I’m going to be able to enjoy them on my AT&T U-verse television programming. U-verse has recently released what they call a multi-view option. It provides a multiple picture-in-picture effect onscreen as you can see from the small image above. Initially they’ve offered it for other sports and kids programming, but now they’re making another multi-view channel available just for the Olympics. There’s so much coverage of the events it’s hard to keep up with what’s going on when sometimes, so I’m super excited about being able to see the Multi-view features with this content. I can see what’s happening on a variety of channels and quickly switch to one of the channels instantly if I want to see what’s happening there on the larger screen. AT&T is offering more coverage than just what’s being broadcast on TV. You can also get online coverage and mobile coverage taking advantage of the AT&T U-verse network. Posted: 31 Jan 2010 07:38 PM PST When I found these screenshots, the first thing I thought was “these are really cool!” and then I saw it was for something called “Halo Reach” and I Apparently, if you have Halo ODST, you already have an invitation into the Beta for Reach. Who knew? What you have to do is sit on your hands until the Fall of this year. You can check out Bungie’s site for all the details along with a video or two. If you don’t want to click the pretty little link, know you MUST have an Xbox Live Gold account and that the multiplayer Beta will be accessible via Xbox Live. Images/Microsoft Post from: EveryJoe |
Posted: 31 Jan 2010 07:35 PM PST My son loves playing video games. We just got him a new Nintendo DSi for Christmas and he spends lots of time playing that. This weekend he was able to score an old school Nintendo from his aunt (even though I had one in the garage). My son has been engrossed with playing the old school Super Mario Bros. 3 on the original Nintendo system. He’s even gotten the full-blown experience, literally. He’s now realized that back when we were kids we had to blow on the game cartridges to get them to work. It’s not confusing to me why I would enjoy playing these old school games, I’m reconnecting with my youth right? I will admit though, even I’m a little bit amazed at what I remember thinking were absolutely amazing graphics! The confusion I’m trying to figure it out is why doesn’t my son like the idea of just playing the same game on the Nintendo Wii through the virtual console features? I paid good money for the Nintendo Wii, for a little bit more money we can play all of those favorite games without blowing on any cartridges. Post from: EveryJoe |
Grading the New 2009-10 FBS Coaches, part 1 Posted: 31 Jan 2010 07:32 PM PST There’s still time for schools to fire coaches (or for coaches to retire), but things have slowed down a bit, and I think we’ve seen most of the changes that are going to happen this year. It was a big year for fires and hires, with over 20 schools welcoming new leaders. But how do these schools grade? I’m going to do this in multiple parts, since there are so many schools with new coaches. Here’s my opinion, though. ![]() How will Kelly's replacement grade at Cincinnati? Image: Newscom Akron
Things weren’t working with Brookhart at Akron. This was the fourth straight season for the school to win less than half of their games, despite starting his career there as MAC Coach of the Year. Four really, really bad seasons though? That’s more than a rebuilding period. That said, I’m not sure that Ianello is a much better choice. I feel like he’s looking at Akron as a stepping stone and won’t be fully committed to the school. He comes to the Zips from an assistant coaching position at Notre Dame, and he didn’t suck at his job. I just don’t see him having a lot of loyalty at the school, even if I do think he can really get them back on the right track again. Buffalo
You can’t blame Turner Gill for taking the job at Kansas, and I think if the school had to replace him, Jeff Quinn was one of the best choices they could have made. Quinn’s performance in the Sugar Bowl as interim of Cincinnati maybe wasn’t the best, but he was thrown into things at the last second. He’s coming into Buffalo from a great season with the Bearcats, and he’s bring a number of Cincy staffers with him to round out his coaching staff. Central Michigan
Dan Enos is coming to Central Michigan from Michigan State. My biggest problem with him is his lack of experience. He served as a quarterbacks and running backs coach at MSU, and was previously in quarterbacks coaching positions at Western Michigan, North Dakota State, Southern Illionois, and Southerwest Missouri State. Really…that’s not a very impressive resume. It’s not like a school like Central Michigan is going to attract big names, but I think they should have gone with their own offensive coordinator, Mike Bajakian. He knows how the team runs and could build on the great foundation Jones built there over the past few years. Can Enos do that? I have doubts. Cincinnati
Kelly leaving Cincinnati is devastating, but the team isn’t left without a good coach. There was some talk that they’d hire interim coach Quinn, but instead, they settled on Jones. Now, Jone isn’t this big recognizable name, but when you look at his work over the past few years, it’s a little mind-blowing. I mean, he created a successful program at Central Michigan. Dude, a lot of college football fans don’t even realize that Central Michigan has a football program, yet there they were ranked #23 this year after finishing 12-2. It’s a good choice for Cincinnati. East Carolina
Holtz might have been a great choice, but McNeill loves East Carolina. It’s his alma mater, and when he was announced as their new head coach, his excitement level was through the roof. He doesn’t come without any experience, either – he’s spent the last 10 seasons at Texas Tech as their defensive coordinator, and took over as interim coach after Mike Leach was suspended and fired. They won the Alamo Bowl under his leadership. I can’t think of any coach in a better spot than McNeill. He has big shoes to fill, and it might have a few trying years, but I think he’ll fall into the role and be a lifer there if they let him. More coaching grades to come! Hugh Laurie Not Like You Might Expect Posted: 31 Jan 2010 06:38 PM PST I may be wrong, but I think Hugh Laurie’s greatest popularity has been gained since his appearance and starring role in the Fox television drama, "House, M.D.". It’s been one of our regular shows since we first watched it and every new episode is captured on the DVR each week. Hugh has done plenty of other work prior to his stint as Dr. Gregory House, but here’s a video of him you may have not seen up until this point. His character development for Dr. House is so great, sometimes it’s hard to forget he doesn’t really walk with a limp and that he has a strong British accent. Now with this video we see he’s got serious musical skills too that we sometimes see a glimpse of on House when he plays the piano. Post from: EveryJoe Hugh Laurie Not Like You Might Expect |
