Young guns of Formula One want to win

Young guns of Formula One want to win

The 2010 Formula One season is in ahead of us after a entertaining and exciting 2009 season that ended with Jenson Button winning his first Formula One World Championship. This was a surprise to many who are saying that he has no chance of repeating the feat and that the real champion is Lewis Hamilton, who will soon reclaim his crown.

The truth of the matter could in fact be that both are pretenders and the real champion has just returned onto the scene in the form of former Formula One World Champion, Michael Schumacher. Maybe Michael is over the hill and about to fall flat on his face as many think, but this is hardly likely considering the class of the racer were talking about. Michael would never come back if he didn’t know he could compete for the championship, so the racers on the track with him should expect him to try to win and have the talent to back it up, even nearing forty.

Button, Hamilton and Schumacher still have to contend with a host of young racers, like Jaime Alguersuari who want nothing more than to surprise everybody by taking the championship. Jamie is the youngest racer, at nineteen years, to ever race in the Formula One and although he has never finished better than fourteenth, he has the talent to win and is still learning to drive.

Jamie appeared on the scene last year at the Hungarian Grand Prix as a replacement for Sebastian Bourdais behind the wheel of Toro Tosso’s race car. He had a great showing despite having no prior testing or experience in a Formula One car, which is amazing considering his age and experience. Jamie will once again face a steep learning curve in his first full year in Formula One, but if he keeps learning at the same rate, he’ll soon be competing with the best on the track.

If he can keep his eye on Button, Hamilton and Schumacher and stay close, he’ll get a lesson that is priceless and one he’s not likely to forget soon. If he comes through the other side of the tunnel ahead of him, we may see him win a championship in a few years, but for the meantime his chances of winning are basically zero.

Exercises for Your Butt and Thighs

Posted: 24 Jan 2010 07:53 PM PST

Use these exercise to help strengthen your legs, hips, and thighs.

  1. Stair Steppers – You get the most out of these when you take big, long steps.  Let your knee come up to the top before you step back down.
  2. Lunges – Go backwards and forwards to generate the most benefit from lunges.  You don’t need any weights to get gains from this exercise.
  3. Squats – Tremendous upper leg and but exercise.  Squats – with a bar or just in the air – will provide you tremendous gains.
  4. Abductors and Adductors – These work your hips and inner thighs which are typically weaker parts of the body.
  5. Leg curls – Strengthen the back of your thighs.
  6. Leg extensions – Hit your quadriceps (top of the thigh) straight on.
  7. Step ups – Step up on to a platform and then come back down.  Add weight to increase the challenge.
  8. Running – Melt the fat off to show your toned legs off.

What’s Your First Gaming Memory?

Posted: 24 Jan 2010 04:48 PM PST

The first gaming system I ever got was the Nintendo NES. That big, grey block of plastic along with its bright orange gun led to much time wastedNES Controller playing Mario and Duck Hunt.

And, you know, those were the only two games I ever got for my NES.

Now, I didn't say those were the only games I ever played for the NES – after all, I did have cousins. And these cousins had parents who bought the cousins lots and lots of video games.

Maybe it was due to the over abundance of video games or maybe the games were a symptom of some deeper pathology, but this one cousin in particular was lousy with video games and it seemed like every time I went to his house he had a new game.

Dan was not only spoiled, he also had a bit of a problem with his anger [still does].

One minute I would be watching Donkey Kong kick his ass and the next minute I would be watching him throw the controller to the floor and him jump on it. All while screaming, "The game is cheating!!!". Even at the tender age of five or six, I realized that my cousin was full of shit.

The game was cheating? Maybe you just suck, dude.

Granted, I didn't say any of that to Dan since I didn't want to get brained with that controller but I was thinking it. Over and over and over again. Who knew Donkey Kong could be such a challenging ass game?

And THAT is probably my first gaming memory.

Since we all remember our first time, I want to know what is your first gaming memory?

Kings of Leon Split From Columbia

Posted: 24 Jan 2010 01:53 PM PST

After making it big in the music industry with their album, Only by the Night, it seems like rock group, Kings of Leon are ready to move on. It has been recently reported that the band will be leaving Columbia Records.

So, who's picking them up? Well, it looks as though Warner Brothers is pretty interested in signing them.

20090531_lis_o05_134_picnik

An insider told The Sun, “Kings of Leon are one of the few bands on the planet who have enough heft to negotiate such a favorable deal. It is virtually unheard of but it shows how keen Warner Brothers were (sic) to have them on their books."

They have to abide by some key rules, though. They made a deal that they would take care of half the recording costs, so that in return, they'd be given a bigger share of profits and more control over spending.

NFC and AFC Playoff Predictions

Posted: 24 Jan 2010 07:30 AM PST

I can’ remember a championship playoff game in history that had more speculation and theory. It must mean that either the four teams playing today are incredibly evenly matched or that there is a lot of emotional support for certain teams more than others. I vote for the latter. It’s not that emotions don’t have their place in sports. Some of the biggest and most satisfying victories in the game came from teams that, on paper, should not have won. But they managed to pull out a victory due to that intangible quality I like to call emotional edge.

20100116_zaf_e47_673.jpg

Even so, sometimes there is an emotional favorite that, even though fans give them their hopes and wishes, they manage to fall apart when it really counts. I think that concept might be a factor today, which may explain some of my picks.

NFC Championship: Vikings versus Saints

Emotional edge: Saints

Winner: Vikings

While many in the country are rooting for the Saints right now, the high level of emotions for this game may work against them. The game is being held on their turf, and their city really needs this win. The Saints dominated in last week’s game against the Cardinals, and this matchup with the Vikings will be a close, mid-level scoring game. Both teams will be able to put points on the board, but the Vikings will pull ahead by the end of the third quarter and maintain a small lead that will stick to the end.

Even if Jeremy Shockey can play today, his sore knee will make him slower in key plays that will give an edge to the Vikes. The only reason this game is going to be close is Darren Sharper, who is chomping at the bit to catch an interception thrown by his old teammate, Brett Favre. Sharper will get one, and only one. The real story will be the Vikings shutting down Reggie Bush, who despite last week’s showing will not be a play-by-play factor this time. He’ll do his job as returner, but remain silent the rest of the game.

AFC Championship: Jets versus Colts

Emotional edge: Jets

Winner: Colts

For some ridiculous reason, the Jets have made it this far, due in part to Rex Ryan’s bravado. Hey, he has to tell his team they are going to win the Super Bowl, because no one else could possibly say that with a straight face. Rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez will demonstrate why experience counts in these games by making interceptions and fumbles acting like, well, the that rookie he is.

By contrast, Peyton Manning will demonstrate why he’s the league’s four-time MVP. There has been much talk about the Colts “allowing” the Jets into the playoffs by sitting their starters during the regular season. Some have speculated that Colts will regret this move. I think maybe it’s the other way around, that the Colts actually wanted to play the Jets today because they knew they could kick their butts. This one is a no brainer. Colts pull ahead late in the second quarter and maintain a lead that will stick throughout the rest of the game.

Apple Tablet Thoughts

Posted: 24 Jan 2010 07:18 AM PST

“Come See Our Latest Creation”, Apple’s much anticipated event on Jan 27 is fast approaching. For some people it can’t come soon enough. A lot has been said and speculated about what Apple will showcase during this event but please allow me to share my thoughts on this.

Come See Our Latest Creation - image courtesy of Apple Inc.

Come See Our Latest Creation - image courtesy of Apple Inc.

First my impressions about the event title and invite. “Come See Our Latest Creation” this implies something new so it’s really pointing towards an Apple Tablet. There have been several events in the past where we all anticipated the release of a tablet but it did not come true. Now the title makes it almost a sure thing it’s a new product vs. just a new version of an existing product.

The paint splashes or splatter signifies that it’s something visual. Some will say that an Apple Tablet will be more of like a Kindle on steriods. Meaning a better ebook reader or something to display media on like a bigger portable video device. I think it will be much more. I think the Apple Tablet will be something that will foster people’s creativity. Something where people can draw and write on and create art work. Something like Wacom’s Cintiq only instead of just being a monitor it will have the whole computer inside it. A laptop version of the Cintiq. Sure a lot of current tablets available in the market can do that but we also had a lot of mobile phones before Apple came out with the iPhone. So the interface will definitely be a game changer.

That being said, I believe this device will have a screen that’s not less than 9 inches. Otherwise visually that’s just going to be difficult. Apple will find a way to have the Tablet’s surface give better feedback. Allowing it to be closer to the feel of pen and paper rather than the touch screens we have today.

A lot of people have been saying that this is Apple’s answer to ebooks and ebook readers. I think while it can and will be used to access ebooks, Apple wants to revolutionize books and magazines as a whole. You’ll still have access to written content but I think it will be married with video, audio, etc. Creating a seamless interface between reading and other visual methods of learning. It will stray away from what the Kindle is and do much much more.

Of course multi touch gestures will still play a big part in it. We’ll see some new things related to this.

Will it run iPhone OS 4 as some people have been saying? It probably will. So this event will showcase some new features of the iPhone OS.

Let’s talk about pricing. Apple has always been known to build premium products so this device won’t be cheap. However I don’t think the price will reach MacBook territory. Otherwise that’s just nuts to me. Why pay for something so expensive when you can buy a laptop for the price. There will be a notable exception if the device is so revolutionary that the MacBook can’t mimic what it will be doing. Otherwise I think Apple will price  it between 500-6oo dollars with price increments for higher models.

We’ll soon find out what this device is. Is it really that good that will blow all of our minds when Steve and co. unveil it. Apple fans, myself included have set the bar high for this still mythical device. It surprises me how a company which has yet to announce the device already has competitors for it. Only Apple can create such mass hysteria about something that has yet to see the light of day.

How to Avoid a Federal Tax Audit

Posted: 24 Jan 2010 06:28 AM PST

This is a guest post from Manny Davis.

A Federal tax audit is the process where you as the taxpayer must prove to the IRS that you correctly reported all income, deductions, exemptions, and credits. Unfortunately, with a tax audit you are guilty till you prove your innocence (unless you appeal and land in court). In general, the probability of having your individual tax return audited is usually lower than 2% (based on historical data) and most audit letters are sent out 1 to 1.5 years after you file your tax return.

600px-US-InternalRevenueService-Seal.svgThere is no sure fire way to avoid a tax audit but there are many things you can do as an individual taxpayer to lower the probability of one. If you are concerned about a tax return that you filed more than 3 years ago, do not worry, the IRS cannot audit a tax return older than 3 years (from the filing date) unless you understated your income by 25% or more or you filed a fraudulent return. Many have hypothesized the numerous factors the IRS uses to flag tax returns for review but no one knows for sure. The IRS’s computer program called DF (Discriminant Function) analyzes a wide variety of factors but many would agree deductions, credits, and exemptions are the major points of determination.

Here are few guidelines to follow that may help you stay under the radar or keep a low profile:

  • Beware of Having a Large Sum of Itemized Deductions: The IRS has targets or thresholds in terms of the total amount of deductions that are typical for your income bracket. Remember, you can itemize interest payments, medical expenses that are greater than 7.5% of income, local taxes, state taxes, and charitable contributions. The IRS does not reveal what ranges are acceptable for itemized deductions but you can get a good idea by looking at averages in the past. Here are averages for total deductions by income from 2006 which will give you a good idea of where you stand:
    • $15-30k in Gross Income – the Average total deduction was $19.8k; $30-$50k – $20k; $50-$100k – $24.6k; $100-$200k – $36.5k; $200 or more – $110k
  • Large Charitable Contribution Deductions – If you have given large charitable contributions in 2009, you should get a letter or receipt from the charity you gave money to. The IRS or the IRS’s computer program will be looking at charitable donations especially if they make up a large percentage of your income. In general if you do not have a receipt for charitable contributions over $250 dollars do not claim it as a deduction on your tax return.
  • Avoid Evenly Rounded Deductions – It is very unlikely that any of your deductions will be evenly rounded. Having evenly rounded deductions can trigger an IRS audit because your tax return will look unnatural.
  • Home-Office Deductions – If you work a full time job and also have a side business from home and you are claiming a home office deduction this can be a red flag. Do not claim a home office deduction unless you solely use your office (or room) for business.
  • Hand-Written or Incomplete Tax Returns / Math Errors – Most of the tax returns are first analyzed by a computer so if you hand write your tax returns and your handwriting is sloppy you are basically asking for an audit. Furthermore, if your tax return is not completed in full or has math errors an audit is very likely. Moral of the story: Do not fill in your tax return by hand, instead, use a computer program like TurboTax or TaxCut.
  • Report All Income – This sounds simple but hundreds of taxpayers a year forget or purposely do not claim income from investments, side jobs, and other income sources. For example, if you are a student and you receive scholarship money, followed by a 1099, you better report that on your tax return. The general rule is if you receive a 1099, then the IRS knows about it and will be looking for it to be reported on your tax return.
  • Avoid False Business Expense – This is the number one cause for most tax audits. If you are self-employed, or run a side business, make sure to claim personal expenses as personal. In other words, do not try to claim personal expenses as business expenses. If you purchase a computer for personal use, do not claim that as a business expense.
  • Try To Classify All Deductions – Many audits are caused simply because expenses are not specifically classified but rather put under Miscellaneous on a Schedule C (if you own a business you will need to attach Schedule C). If you cannot find a category for an expense, create a new one that is accurate and correctly describes the expense(s).

All in all, make sure you have documentation for any tax deductions you try to claim. If you are audited these documents, receipts, statements etc will be needed to help get the IRS off your back. During these tough economic times, the IRS is doing everything to increase tax revenues so one can expect audits to potentially increase.

SAG Awards: Kate Hudson

Posted: 24 Jan 2010 03:22 AM PST

The SAG Awards, like the rest of the awards shows, aren’t particularly exciting. But the event is a great time to catch some of the Hollywood hotties dressed to the nines. At the 2010 SAG Awards on Saturday night, Kate Hudson definitely turned some heads in a white backless gown. Though this dress didn’t expose any cleavage, it was certainly one of the sexiest of the night.
