RIP Gaines Adams

Posted: 18 Jan 2010 11:56 AM PST

It’s so sad to see a football player, the very epitome of strength and vitality, get taken down so very young. I was truly saddened to see that Chicago Bear defensive end Gaines Adams had died over the weekend. He was just 26. The Associated Press said an autopsy revealed an enlarged heart, which had apparently been undetected before.

Adams is one of those players very few people heard about. He was in the league just a few short years, playing for both the Bears and Tampa Bay Bucs. The Bucs drafted him in 2007 and had all kinds of hope and expectations for him. Too much perhaps. The AP says he “had just 17 tackles and one sack in 15 games — 10 with Chicago — this season.”

The saddest thing is how much potential he had. I can’t stand when a player like this dies and people say he had no impact. Every player, every person, has impact. Look at Charles Woodson’s year. He was just named Defensive Player of the Year and had his best season ever at the age of 33. Woodson has only gotten better each year he has been with the Packers.

Let’s use the death of Adams as a way to remind ourselves that a life is important, no matter the records or events you can see and document. So much more goes into a player’s game, a sports team, and a life.

Personal Finances and Charitable Giving

Posted: 18 Jan 2010 09:29 AM PST

The recent, devastating earthquake in Haiti has me thinking about charitable giving and how it fits into personal finances. Ask Mr. Credit Card wrote a post, encouraging us to give to the cause. I give regularly to my church congregation’s humanitarian fund, and I can specify that some of my donation go to help efforts in Haiti. Which is what I am doing.

Peacekeeping - MINUSTAHIt may seem counter-intuitive, but many personal finance gurus cite charitable giving as one of the most important aspects of financial planning. For giving money away! But the idea is that when you live your life acknowledging that you can help others through charitable giving, you live more abundantly.

If you have spiritual convictions on the subject, you probably believe that you will be blessed when you share some of your money with others. On a non-spiritual level, someone who budgets for charity and prioritizes such items are likely doing something similar in all areas of their finances, and are likely to be doing well.

In the end, I think that it is vital to share some of my wealth with others. There is almost always someone who needs help desperately, and I think that charitable giving is an important part of sound personal financial behaviors.

What do you think? Do you give to charitable organizations?

“Bejeweled Twist” For Nintendo DS

Posted: 18 Jan 2010 08:24 AM PST

Bejeweled is one of the most addictive games I've ever played.  I can think of a number of times when I said that I'd just play for a few minutes and, before I knew it, hours had passed.  bejeweled twist cover

Now, Bejeweled Twist is being released exclusively for the Nintendo DS and it looks like this new version is going to be a lot of fun – especially since there is now a two player mode that will allow me to annihilate my friends and family!

There are four other five game modes: Classic, Blitz, Challenge and Zen.  A sixth mode, Eclipse, can be unlocked when players will take on more than 90 challenges on 13 different planets.

If you love puzzle games and mindless gaming, Bejeweled Twist is probably a great choice.

Ray Allen Wants All-Star Voting Changed

Posted: 18 Jan 2010 07:43 AM PST

Ray Allen doesn’t have to worry about being singled out for his comments on the NBA All-Star voting structure. Most people, including me, agree with him.

The comments came after it was announced that both Allen Iverson and Tracy McGrady made the 2010 All-Star team. Allen basically asked the question we all were thinking — why?

Ray Allen wants the NBA All-Star voting changed.

Both Iverson and McGrady have had horrible years. Iverson left the Memphis Grizzlies earlier in the season because he wasn’t happy with his playing time. He rejoined the 76ers later on, but he isn’t the player he used to be. And McGrady wasn’t even playing for the Houston Rockets because of an injury. Even when he came back, the Rockets didn’t want to insert him back into the starting line-up. He was ultimately given the boot and is now patiently waiting for a trade.

You’re telling me that there aren’t two players  who have had better seasons than these two guys in the whole NBA?  That’s the problem with fan voting. And that’s the point Allen was trying to make.

“I like the fact that the fans get the opportunity to vote and pick who they’d like to see in the All-Star game,” he said, according to SI.com.  “But I don’t think it should be 100 percent.”

I don’t, either. That’s two slots on the All-Star team that could have gone to two more deserving candidates. All-Stars should be selected on current play and performance, not on name and past reputation.

“Avatar” Wins Two Golden Globes

Posted: 17 Jan 2010 10:31 PM PST

In what was a repeat of James Cameron's success 12 years ago with Titanic, his newest film, Avatar, took home the Golden Globe awards for "Best Drama" and "Best Direction."  Could he be poised to take home some Oscars next month?  It's looking more and more possible.

20th Century Fox

The blockbuster has been dominating the box office for weeks and I personally know at least one person who has gone back to see it more than once.  I haven't seen it yet but I'm guessing I should get off my butt and buy a ticket.

“‘Avatar’ asks us to see that everything is connected, all human beings to each other, and us to the Earth. And if you have to go four and a half light years to another, made-up planet to appreciate this miracle of the world that we have right here, well, you know what, that’s the wonder of cinema right there, that’s the magic,” Cameron said.

It sounds like the film's message has had the intended effect since movie goers and critics have been touched by the storyline.  It's great when you can combine great special effects with a thought-provoking script.  Too often, one is sacrificed for the other so I really wouldn't be surprised if this took home some statues at the upcoming Academy Awards.

Fulmer to Return to Tennessee…

Posted: 17 Jan 2010 09:32 PM PST

…but not as their coach, so he says. Phillip Fulmer was fired after going 152-52 in 17 seasons, and many believe that this was a major mistake by the school. The opted to hire Lane Kiffin, who has deserted Tennessee in favor of USC, and as soon as the announcement was made, people began calling for Fulmer to return.

Now, the new coach for the Volunteers will reportedly be Derek Dooley, the former coach at Louisiana Tech, and I’m not sure whether or not Fulmer helped to pick him, but I think that Vols fans are going to need a lot of convincing that he’ll stay, not run off to another “better” job after just a year, something Fulmer didn’t do.

The ex-coach has said that he wants to return to college football, but has gone on record as saying that he didn’t want to replace Kiffin. However, he has stated that he wanted to return to help the Vols search for a new leader for the team, and he notes that he thinks the next coach should “embrace Tennessee traditions, be mature and have integrity.”

Dig at Kiffin much?

I’ve always been part of team Fulmer. I think he’s a great coach who had a few bad years as during a rebuilding period, and personally, I think he should have been a contender for the Michigan job, as well as some other high-profile jobs around the country.

One thing is clear, however – Fulmer bleeds Orange. He returned to the school to help them find a replacement for the man who so unceremoniously replaced him, and that shows a real love for the program. Maybe it’s good that he hasn’t taken another coaching job. Could he ever really feel comfortable at another school?

Jerry Stackhouse Joins the Bucks

Posted: 17 Jan 2010 08:55 PM PST

Jerry Stackhouse, the former NBA All-Star, has signed a deal to join the Milwaukee Bucks. The Bucks need Stackhouse’s scoring to replace the void left the season-ending injury suffered by Michael Redd. The deal for Stackhouse will be for the rest of the season at the NBA minimum.

The 35-year-old Stackhouse played the last five seasons with the Dallas Mavericks. In ten games last season, Stackhouse averaged 4.2 points on 26.7% shooting. That was the first time in his career that he didn’t average double figures. Stackhouse entered the league in the 1995-96 season after being picked in the first round by the Philadelphia 76ers.

Currently, the Bucks are the ninth seed in the Eastern Conference — two games behind the Chicago Bulls. They’ve lost four of their last five games, including a 17-point defeat at the hands of the Utah Jazz on Saturday.

Although rookie Brandon Jennings has been impressive at times this season for the Bucks, there’s no doubt he’ll need some scoring help if Milwaukee is to make the playoffs. That’s where Stackhouse and his career 18.4 points per game average comes into play.

Predictions for NFC and AFC Championships

Posted: 17 Jan 2010 08:55 PM PST

A week from today, the NFC Championship and the AFC Championship will be played. The NFC Championship features the New York Jets and the Indianapolis Colts, while the AFC Championship has the Minnesota Vikings taking on the New Orleans Saints. Who will win? Where are my predictions:

Jets @ Colts

The Colts lost their perfect season when they were beaten in Week 16 by the Jets. In the second half, New York ran all over Indianapolis. However, there was one big issue — the Colts had pulled their starters.

Now, with all the chips on the line, the Colts will go all out. While the Jets are perhaps the best defensive team in the NFL, the Colts offense is just too good. Peyton Manning will find ways to score even though he’s not blessed with much help in the running game.

The Jets will put up a fight but they just don’t have enough on the offensive end. Mark Sanchez could be a star in the making but he’s still too green.

PREDICTION: Colts 24, Jets 10

Vikings @ Saints

When it comes to explosive offenses, there might not be too better teams than the Vikings and Saints. Brett Favre and the Vikings can put points on the board in a very quick manner, while the Saints were on pace to break all sorts of NFL records during the regular season.

The Vikings have some advantages. Favre has immense experience and a deeper set of receivers. Adrian Peterson will be the best running back on the field and the Vikings defense features fierce run defense.

That said, I give the advantage to the Saints. They’ll be playing at home in front of a very excited crowd. Most importantly, their defense is healthier than Minnesota’s defense. Brees will be able to carry the team via the pass as New Orleans’ defense makes life tough for Favre.

PREDICTION: Saints 31, Vikings 24

Brendan Donnelly to the Pittsburgh Pirates

Posted: 17 Jan 2010 08:55 PM PST

The Pittsburgh Pirates entered the offseason wanting to address their bullpen. Their latest move to accomplish that goal is to sign free agent Brendan Donnelly to a $1.5 million contract. The one-year deal will become official after a physical and includes another $1.5 million in incentives.

The 38-year-old Donnelly had a very good season with the Florida Marlins last season. In 30 appearances, he had a 1.78 ERA and 25 strikeouts in 25.1 innings.

In his career, Donnelly has a 3.02 ERA in 348 appearances. However, durability has been an issue as he hasn’t pitched more than 26 innings since 2006 with the Los Angeles Angels.

In addition to the Marlins and Angels, Donnelly has pitched for the Boston Red Sox and Cleveland Indians.

The Pirates have also signed relief pitcher DJ Carrasco recently and rumors indicate that they are close to inking Octavio Dotel. If Dotel is signed, he has a good chance of beginning the season as Pittsburgh’s closer.
