Boise State Want a White House Invite Posted: 15 Jan 2010 01:16 PM PST Well, to be more correct, Utah’s Senator, Orrin Hatch, wants a white house invite for the team. Every year, the National Championship Game winner is invited to meet the president in Washington, but this year, Alabama isn’t the only undefeated team. ![]() Senator Orrin Hatch, Image: Newscom Hatch sent a letter to President Obama yesterday, stating that because there is no playoff, it is unfair to call a single team the best in college football. He was outspoken about the lack of playoff last year as well, when Utah wasn’t chosen to play in the title game, and he sent a letter to Washington asking the Justice Department to investigate whether the BCS violates certain laws. That letter has yet to be answered. Bill Hancock, the BCS’s executive director, said that he’s leaving the ultimate travel decision to Obama, but he believes that Alabama deserves to be called the champions, if not for their performance on the field, for the votes in the AP poll. He says,
The White House seems to agree. spokesman Adam Abrams says that although Obama isn’t pleased with the current BCS system, he’s busy with other more important matters right now. This issue is moving forward, even if Boise State doesn’t get to go to Washington. In December, a House subcommittee approved new legislation that would require any team that’s called a “national champion” to be the result of a playoff. Even that might only change the words, not the actual system, and the bill has a long way to go in Congress before it might effect the sport. Posted: 15 Jan 2010 07:31 AM PST The NFC matchups are some of the best I can remember in recent history. This will be an exciting weekend for football fans. Here are my predictions for the NFC games. Dallas Cowboys versus Minnesota Vikings Winner: Vikings This game has all the makings of the biggest and baddest showdown this season. On one hand, we’ve got Wisconsin native Tony Romo playing against the guy he grew up watching on TV, Brett Favre. We’ve got a red hot Cowboys team who have silenced critics by regaining their postseason mojo. Finally, we’ve got Favre getting ever closer to his goal of winning a Super Bowl title. Despite the drama of the quarterback match up, it’s the defense that will rule the day here. Wade Phillips has been able to hold on to his job by showing his defensive prowess of late, but it won’t be enough to silence Favre and his arsenal of offensive weapons. As if that weren’t enough, the Vikings defense will make Romo look like he’s still crying over his breakup with Jessica Simpson. Vikings will put ahead in the second quarterback and keep pounding on the points. Arizona Cardinals versus New Orleans Saints Winner: Saints I think Kurt Warner is the one of the best quarterbacks in history, but even with him I don’t think the Cardinals can beat the Saints right now. Sure, sure, I know what you’re saying. The Saints might have dropped a few at the end of the season, but they’ll put it all behind them as they pull ahead in the fourth quarter to win. Even if the Cardinals’ Anquan Boldin is healthy enough to play, it won’t be enough to pull out a victory. Expect this one to be a big scorer, much the same as the Cardinal/Packer game was last week. Consumer Warning: Phony Census Workers Posted: 15 Jan 2010 06:02 AM PST Every 10 years, as laid down by the Founding Fathers in our Constitution, there is a census. While the Census Bureau gathers population information almost constantly, there is still an official Census every decade. And this year, you should be receiving a form in the mail. And, of course, Census Bureau workers will be out visiting some homes. Which means that entrepreneurial scammers will be out visiting homes as well. In order to avoid being scammed by fake Census workers, keep the following in mind:
In the end, it’s all about knowing the actual procedures of Census workers. And then staying away from anything that appears suspicious. Image source: Birdie Holsclaw via Flickr Post from: EveryJoe Consumer Warning: Phony Census Workers |

Rihanna: Chris Brown “Insecure” Posted: 14 Jan 2010 11:17 PM PST The world was pretty shocked when Chris Brown assaulted his then girlfriend, Rihanna, almost a year ago but I'm not surprised at all to hear what she has to say about their relationship.
In a recent interview with W Magazine, she explains: “There were control issues, insecurity. When people are insecure, they become very controlling and they can get very aggressive and in turn abusive. It doesn’t have to be physical. Like, they would say bad stuff to you to make you feel lesser than them, just so they would have control in the relationship. It takes a big toll on your emotions and on your everyday life. It changes you.” Some people have accused her of talking too much about the situation. Chris Brown fans have even said that she's exploiting her experience to ruin his career. She has a different explanation for opening up: “At first, I completely shut down. But now I feel like this happened to me so I could be a voice for young girls who are going through what I went through and don’t know how to talk about it. It’s not about Chris, about hurting him or sabotaging his career. I don’t care about that part of it.” Post from: EveryJoe Rihanna: Chris Brown “Insecure” |
What Exercises You Should Never Ignore Posted: 14 Jan 2010 10:37 PM PST Some exercises are simply better than others. In fact, some exercises are so great, you should constantly weave them into your routine whenever you can. In a true sense of tradition, they’re all classics that require nothing but you and a floor. ![]() commons.wikimedia.org Push-ups are timeless. What else is going to give you chest, shoulders, triceps, back, and abs all in one? At the same time, push-ups are flexible enough to easily transfer focus to a specific muscle. Another cushy benefit is you’re not going to get injured. Squats are another compound exercise that helps several muscles in one. Your butt, thighs, and calves are all assisted but unlike push-ups, squats can be hard on your knees. No problem, try air squats instead of using weights. This alleviates a lot of the pressure. Bridges aren’t as well known, but they really shore up your core. For bridges, get in either an upright push-up position, or instead of putting your palms facing the ground, use your elbows. To effectively strengthen up your abs and back, keep your body straight and tight. As a bonus, your legs will receive a little benefit as well. Posted: 14 Jan 2010 09:34 PM PST “Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: For thou art with me.” Psalm 23:4 Sometime in the not-too-distant future, 30 years after the final war, one man travels West (yes, for 30 years) across the wasteland that was once America. Desolate miles of skeletons in abandoned vehicles. Empty cities, broken highways, scorched earth—all around him, the marks of catastrophic destruction. There is no civilization as we know today. And there is no law. The roads belong to gangs that rape and pillage. They are survivors who would kill a man for his shoes, an ounce of water—or for no reason at all. Yet none of them prove to be any match for a man named Eli when they challenge his will—or should I say God’s will. ![]() The Book of Eli / Image courtesy Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc. Eli (Denzel Washington) is a warrior by calling and seeks only peace. But, if challenged, he will cut (literally) his attackers down before they realize their mistake. It’s not his own life he guards so fiercely but his hope for the future and a most important book (the only one of its kind left) that will provide the foundation for that future; a hope he has carried and protected for 30 years and is determined until death to realize. Driven by this commitment and guided by his belief in something greater than himself, Eli does what he must to survive—and continue. Now this is fire and brimstone! Only one other man in this ruined world understands the power Eli holds because it was part of his own upbringing. And he is determined to make it his own: Carnegie (Gary Oldman), the self-appointed ruler of a makeshift town of thieves and gunmen. Meanwhile, Carnegie’s adopted daughter Solara (the lovely Mila Kunis) is fascinated by Eli for another reason: the glimpse he offers of what may exist beyond her stepfather’s painful kingdom. And the example he sets by not only his words, but also his actions. Eli walks by faith, not by sight (2 Corinthians 5:7). And he must keep moving to fulfill his destiny and bring help to a ravaged humanity. I saw a screening of The Book of Eli last night and what I liked most about this classic good versus evil movie was that it had something to say about commitment, sacrifice, survival and human nature. It wasn’t just another hokey, post-apocalyptic, pseudo-Western, action-adventure (not that there’s anything wrong with that). There’s a theme of believing you can do something. And then seeing it through and getting it done—based on faith. Denzel Washington’s portrayal as a reverent superhero actually works. And if the goal of the movie was to make me appreciate life and how precious it is—or at least offer a reminder—that worked, too. TheBookofEliMovie.com Post from: EveryJoe |

Florida Marlins Ink Josh Johnson Posted: 14 Jan 2010 08:55 PM PST Josh Johnson is one of the most coveted young pitchers in the all of baseball. The Florida Marlins opened their stubborn purse strings and inked Johnson to a $39 million deal that goes through 2013. The 25-year-old will become one of the few high priced players on the Marlins roster. Last season, Johnson was 15-5 with a 3.23 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP. In his career, which spans back to 2005, he’s 34-16 with a 3.40 ERA. At 6-foot-7, Johnson uses his size to his advantage and most every scout believes he has a very good future. Johnson’s success is also a feel good story considering that he had major surgery that limited him to only four starts in 2007 and 14 starts in 2008. His strong return in 2009 was apparently all the Marlins needed to see to believe in his long-term health. Said Johnson: “I’m excited. It sets up me and my family for life.” If the Marlins are going to have success in the next few years it will have a lot to do with Johnson’s pitching. ![]() Josh Johnson will be in Florida for a while (Image: Zuma Press) Post from: EveryJoe Florida Marlins Ink Josh Johnson |
Sundiata Gaines Hits Game-Winner for Jazz Posted: 14 Jan 2010 08:55 PM PST In one of the best stories of the NBA season, Sundiata Gaines — a little known point guard for the Utah Jazz — hit a game-winner on Thursday night for the Jazz against the Cleveland Cavaliers. Gaines’ three-point swish at the buzzer gave the Jazz a 97-96 win. Signed to a second ten-day contract, Gaines was playing in only his fifth NBA game. The rookie obviously doesn’t lack confidence in himself. Said Gaines: “I knew if I caught the ball I was going for the win. Once it left my hand it felt good. Just to beat Cleveland, this was a big game.” Carlos Boozer led the way for the Jazz with 19 points, 13 rebounds and six assists, however he had fouled out before the game-winner by Gaines. As for Gaines, he was 3-for-3 from the field and had nine points. The Cavs were led by LeBron James, who was especially impressive in the fourth quarter. Cleveland’s icon had 36 points, nine rebounds, six assists and five steals in 40 minutes. With the win, the Jazz were able to leapfrog the Oklahoma City Thunder into eighth place in the Western Conference standings. ![]() Sundiata Gaines hits the game-winner for the Utah Jazz (Image: Zuma Press) Post from: EveryJoe Sundiata Gaines Hits Game-Winner for Jazz |
