The Benefits of Jumping Rope

Posted: 26 Jan 2010 08:06 PM PST

Slackers beware, jumping rope has a no-excuse clause built into the exercise.  Jumping rope extinguishes every potential excuse I can think of.  Cost?  Most jump ropes are $15 or less.  Time?  All you need to do is pick up the rope and go for 10 minutes.  Space?  As long as you’re ceiling is 11 foot and you can move out an empty space with 6 foot of clear between the front and back of you, you’re good.

Jumping rope is even a low impact exercise on your knees if you do it right so it’s not harmful to you.

The benefits include balance, coordination, agility, and strength.  Also, with this type of cardio, you’ll help chisel calf, shoulder, and other muscles by working strength and burning calories.

Just looking at the plus side with no negatives in sight, it’s really a no brainer.  Buy a jump rope and try to use it twice a week to switch up your workout.  If you’re a beginner, just go for going as long as you can in a steady pace and as soon as you break the loop, wait 15 seconds and resume.

These are perfect jump ropes for all you need:

Saints Win So Much More Than Interception

Posted: 26 Jan 2010 04:18 PM PST

Did everyone see the same game I did on Sunday? I think some in the sports media get so wrapped up in Brett Favre hatred that they sum up the game like this: interception and lost the game. But I saw a lot more than that.

20100124_zaf_e47_643.jpg

First of all, I talked about having an emotional edge in my prediction post about Sunday’s games. I had predicted that the game would be close, but that emotions would run high, especially on the part of the Saints. I knew this game meant a lot to the team that had never gone to a Super Bowl, and the town that needed some great news. I suggested that if the Saints didn’t get their emotions under control, it would cost them.

The final score was a victory, but let’s face it, the amount of ridiculous penalties the Saints had showed that they were keyed up to the point of implosion, and those were the ones that were called. What about the lack of call on the low hit on Favre? The one that caused him to limp off the field? The rulebook clearly states that unless blocked or fouled into a quarterback, players are not allowed to lunge at a quarterback’s legs. But the Saints did, and there was no penalty for it.

The Vikings, on the other hand, had a set of emotions to work through themselves. How many fumbles did Adrian Peterson need to have before he stepped up and played decently. Favre threw a boneheaded interception at the end in a play meant simply to get more yardage for a Ryan Longwell field goal. What was coach Brad Childress thinking? Longwell could have still easily made that without needing to jam in another pass.

I still believe the Saints have the power to win the Super Bowl, but they need to seriously take a look at the way they played on Sunday and get their heads together. I doubt the Colts are going to have the emotional issues (dropped passes, fumbles, lame calls, and interceptions) that the Vikings had.

Favre Will Not Waffle on Retirement

Posted: 26 Jan 2010 03:33 PM PST

As a Packer fan, I’ve watched Brett Favre for over a decade now, and closer to two. Love him or hate him, he is definitely the best player I have ever seen play the game of football. He’s fun to watch, always exciting, and the controversy he always seems to drag along with him keeps him in the headlines. Even before the Vikings final game this past weekend, people were whispering about his retirement.

20100117_zaf_e47_509.jpg

People say he has gone back and forth, and while there is some truth to it, there is also a lot we don’t know. Coming from Wisconsin, I’ve heard a lot more things that seemed to get missed when mainstream media comments on this situation. I’ve heard two local sports guy go “off the record” on our radio stations to say that a) Thompson was trying to push Favre out from the beginning, and b) Favre made a deal with Minnesota long before August. I’ll save you the detail on this, but suffice to say the media will spin it anyway they want.

If we take into consideration point A above, Favre retiring and then changing his mind the very first time is a no brainer. He was pressured into leaving and into making a decision he didn’t want to make. Retiring from the Jets? Again, no brainer. The Packers tried to be “the good guys” in this situation by forcing him to retire, rather than just trading him from the beginning. When Favre finally forced their hand two years later and made them trade him, General Manager Ted Thompson sent him to the Jets and would not even entertain talks with teams within the NFC north, like the Vikings. Of course if there was an opportunity to play, he was going to take it. Why not? The Vikings were the perfect place for Favre, which their outstanding season proved.

This time, however, he’s 40 and got the living crap pounded out of him on the field on Sunday by the Saints. I think people really overlook the toughness he’s showed. They assume he hasn’t gotten hurt, but that’s not the case. He’s played hurt. Big difference. At 40 years old, he’s got a lot more to think about when it comes to his health.

This time, unlike the Packers situation, he also has a coach who isn’t shoving him out the door. He will take the time he needs to take to make an informed decision. Brad Childress told the Minneapolis Star Tribune that:

I know it too well to know that emotions are a little bit raw right now. We’re still too close to it. He’s earned his time to be able to step away from it and talk to his family and figure out what he wants to do. But I don’t have a strong expectation one way or the other. It would not surprise me one way or the other.

This time Favre will make his decision based on the year he’s had, what’s best for him and his family, his health, his age, and what kind of goals he has, like he should have been able to make the very first time around years ago with the Packers. This time Favre will make his decision, whatever it is, and that will be it.

My Apple Tablet predictions

Posted: 26 Jan 2010 02:52 PM PST

We are now less than 24 hours away from Apple potentially changing the way we use computers forever. The last time a product was hyped this heavily, with so many rumors swirling through the media, was… well, it was probably Apple’s last revolutionary product, the iPhone.

Now, if the hyperbole is to be believed, Steve Jobs is about to do it again. Everybody on the planet has weighed in on the coming of the Apple Tablet, so why shouldn’t I? I’ve followed every rumor, every guess, and every “insider report” with avid interest, so here I present my thoroughly unscientific, non-expert, and very likely pointless predictions on the final configuration of Apple’s game-changing device.

apple_brushedmetal

NAME: iPad
“iSlate” has gained steam in the last month or two, but I still think Steve will lean towards something that feels a little more synchronous with a successful brand name like iPod. Yeah, yeah, I’ve heard all the jokes about how “iPad” sounds like certain hygiene products, but everybody thought Nintendo had lost its marbles with “Wii” at first too, but nobody’s laughing anymore.

PRICE: $999
I’ve read reports just this week that the final price is likely to be “significantly less than $1,000.” But come on. This is Apple. They never launch a brand new category of product at bargain-basement prices. I think it’ll start out close to the $1,000 mark, and then over time the price will sharply drop, just like the iPhone.

SHIP DATE: May 2010
I’d love to be wrong about this one. I hope that I am. But history teaches us that, particularly when it comes to a brand new product (that’s not an upgrade of an existing product), Apple likes to build the anticipation. Remember the lines outside the Apple stores before the iPhone launched? Plus, there’s likely to be tons of brand-new technology inside Apple’s tablet, and they’ll be wise to give themselves time to perfect the manufacturing process.

OPERATING SYSTEM: Something new, a sort of hybrid between OS X and iPhone OS.
Many are they who claim the tablet will run on an upgraded version of the iPhone’s operating system. Just as many claim that it will run OS X, arguing that Apple intends to position it as a replacement for or alternative to the traditional laptop. But all that touchscreen technology, with the multitouch gestures and the expertise Apple has gained at developing apps for the iPhone, adds up to a need for something that requires the best of both worlds.

SIZE: 11″ screen
Steve’s going to want a screen big enough to justify the need for a brand new touchscreen device for iPhone users, not to mention room to read all of the rumored ebook applications the tablet will have. 11″ is bare minimum. Anything less will be a hard sell. Remember that Apple’s smallest laptop has a 13″ display, and users just aren’t going to want anything much smaller than that. The thickness of the device is anybody’s guess, but it goes without saying that it’ll be superthin. Pretty much because they can. And Steve just loves things that are superthin.

CONNECTIVITY: Wifi & 3G both
This is a total a no-brainer. The only real surprise here would be if Apple opted to go next-gen with 4G instead of 3G.

LOOK & FEEL: Similar to current-gen iMacs
With rumors swirling that the iPod 4 will upgrade its look to the eco-friendly brushed aluminum design of today’s iMacs, it seems likely that the tablet will adopt a similar aesthetic. And I’ll be surprised if Steve doesn’t want the screen to stretch as close to the outer edge of the device as is technologically possible, so I’m expecting to see a very narrow outer margin.

OTHER FEATURES
I’m expecting one of the device’s biggest innovations to be its interface for typing. After all, if Apple can’t make the device just as easy to type on as a keyboard, then pundits will question the need for it at all. I’m hoping to see a multitouch gesture-style typing scheme that recognizes when your 8 primary fingertips touch the screen, and automatically pops up with an on-screen QWERTY keyboard right where your fingers are. (Apple’s filed a patent for a touchscreen that has reconfigurable “bumps” that’s sort of a tactile feedback thingamabob, and it sounds insanely cool, but I’m not looking for it in the first generation of the tablet. It seems more like the kind of thing that will come along further down the road. But wow, what a stir it would cause if this feature actually debuted tomorrow.)

I think the tablet will have a built-in webcam, but not a camera on the back; this will reinforce Apple’s “laptop replacement or alternative” positioning.

It’ll probably run iPhone apps as well as standard apps like Mail and Word that have been altered to work as touchscreen apps. I also expect to see some awesome video games made specifically for the tablet.

Finally, one of the most important functions of the device will be its ereading capabilities. Whether or not Apple can manufacture an LED or OLED screen that offers a competitive level of contrast to e-ink remains to be seen, but Steve Jobs is known to be an avid newspaper reader, and bringing the newspaper into the 21st century just feels like something he’d be all about. And he’ll want to bring magazines along for the ride, since the tablet will be full color, as well as take on Amazon’s Kindle for dominance of the ebook market. I’d love to see a major upgrade to iTunes, or even the launch of a separate iTunes-like store, featuring reading material to be used on the tablet. Again, this seems very much in keeping with how Steve thinks, based on his history.

Frank Martin Needs To Chill

Posted: 26 Jan 2010 01:24 PM PST

Even if you don’t know who Frank Martin is, you would certainly recognize his face. He’s the notorious Kansas St. coach who is frequently seen on ESPN college basketball highlights for his temper tantrums.

Seriously, this guy looks as though he’s about to blow a gasket in every clip. The worst part is that he has an excuse for acting like a manic.

Frank Martin's sideline antics are hard not to notice.

Frank Martin's sideline antics are hard not to notice.

“That's not a show I put on during the course of a game,” Martin said on ESPN.com.  “That's me challenging them nonstop all the time to get them to understand that they cannot get rattled. It's about preparing kids for life. It's about preparing them to succeed.”

Just what exactly is he preparing kids for by berating them, slapping them on the wrist (which was also shown on ESPN) and showing absolutely no restraint whatsoever? He seems more like an overbearing and emotionally abusive parent rather than a college basketball coach.

Frank Martin basically needs to chill. If he doesn’t learn how to control his temper in a constructive manner, we could easily have another Bob Knight incident on our hands. And Martin hardly has the kind of reputation that Knight had as a head coach, so I highly doubt that he’d be able to shake off the consequences and repercussions as easily.

If Martin hits a kid on national television, his coaching career is through. Hopefully, he’ll realize the error of his ways before something like that occurs.

Camping World Truck Series Preparing

Posted: 26 Jan 2010 12:38 PM PST

NASCAR’s Camping World Truck Series had a tough year due to the recession that has been strangling the racing industry, but 2010 is shaping up to be a year when hopes run high that the strangle hold the financial crisis has on the industry will lessen and we can get the truck back on the road. Things are progressing nicely as we head toward the start of the 2010 season and another truck racing extravaganza that should put the entertainment back into our lives.

The trucks are getting ready to race in 2010

The trucks are getting ready to race in 2010

SS Green Light Racing recently told the world that they would be putting Sean Murphy behind the wheel of their No. 07 Chevy Silverado for the opening race of the 2010 Camping World Truck Series season at iconic Daytona International Speedway. Sean is a veteran of the truck series, with a total of 24 starts since the 2004 season, and two previous races on the track of Daytona. He’ll do a good job for SS Green Light Racing and is a sleeper that could have the best year of his racing career, if he and the team are able to get the car up to speed and keep it there for a majority of the races this year.

Sean’s previous best finish was ninth in the Ohio 250 in 2008, which was held on the track of Mansfield Motorsports Speedway in the same No. 07 truck he’ll be racing in the first truck series race of 2010. Sean also had success in 2007 and 2008 with SS Green Light Late Model Racing, grabbing six ASA Late Model Series victories and just missing out on a $100,000 payday. Add in a few Nationwide Series starts that Sean made in 2009 and Sean has the experience he needs to be successful, he just needs to find away to bring it all together at the right time.

The strength of NASCAR is the young drivers, like Sean, who are learning what it takes to race and win in NASCAR and get the best out of themselves and the cars. Sean is just starting to get his wheels under him in NASCAR and if the past is any indication, he could be ready to make a break for the line in his NASCAR career and grab his first win. The potential of young racers like Sean is unlimited at the present moment, it just has to be nurtured and encouraged to grow.

2010 Formula One Season Ahead

Posted: 26 Jan 2010 12:36 PM PST

The 2010 Formula One season is going to be a memorable one before the racing even starts for a number of reasons. Firstly, the arrival of four new teams on the Formula One race scene is going to be a memorable affair, especially with the return of Lotus to the paddock after over a decade on the sidelines. The 2010 season will also be remembered as the year the man many consider to be the best and greatest Formula One racer to ever strap on a helmet and get in a Formula One race car, returns to Formula One with a cloud of doubt hanging over his head. Can Michael Schumacher silence all of the critics who think he’s going to fall on his face?

The return of a former world champion and hero to millions of fans

The return of a former world champion and hero to millions of fans

All of this has happened before the drop of the start flag at the first race of the 2010 Formula One season, so the rest of the season is going to have to be pretty exciting to increase the present level of excitement surrounding the beginning of the 2010 Formula One season. We still have to go through the normal technical controversy that will appear in a few months, if things go down the road they have for the past few season, and this could turn out to be the most interesting part of the beginning of the season.

What surprises will the teams come up with that will change the landscape of the season and put them in front at the start of the season? Will Lewis Hamilton be able to make his expected return to the top of the Formula One world or will Jenson Button rule the track again in 2010? Could Michael Schumacher do more than just have a strong appearance and win a race or two and maybe even challenge for the 2010 Formula One World Championship?

The questions that the 2010 Formula One season will answer could go down in Formula One history as a year that will always be remembered as a year unlike any other. A year when past heros reappeared on the scene to thrill old fans and new and maybe the year that Lewis Hamilton, Jenson Button and Michael Schumacher had a shootout that will never be forgotten.

For me the waiting is the worst part and if they started the season today my energy level and adrenalin would be flowing. The drop of the flag at the first race is what we are all waiting for and the feeling of adrenalin the sound of the engines produces in our veins.

Save Money on Car Costs with Swapalease.com

Posted: 26 Jan 2010 08:12 AM PST

After your housing payment, your car payment is likely to be the next largest obligation you have. You can reduce your obligation with a little, according to an email I received from Swapalease.com. The email offers some interesting ways that you can save money on car costs. Here are some things to consider:

  1. Programs like those offered by Swapalease.com provide a way for you to6041716_1645ce2ff3 transfer a lease that has become too expensive due to your financial circumstances. This can save you money, and reduce the fees you might have to pay if you go through your dealer.
  2. You can take advantage of someone else’s lease. Here is what Swapalease.com points out in the email: “[C]onsider taking over someone else's in-process lease for a shorter term (think 16-18 months versus 60). You'll save on a down payment and benefit from the low payments that were based on a longer term at origination.”

Both of these are interesting ways that you can save money on car costs without locking in a payment for a long period of time. If you are looking for a little wiggle room in your 2010 budget, saving on car costs might be a viable alternative.

Chick of the Day: Monica Bellucci

Posted: 26 Jan 2010 12:02 AM PST

Monica Bellucci is an Italian actress and model. In the U.S., she is best known for her role as Persephone in The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolution. She also played Mary Magdalene in The Passion of the Christ.

However, she made her mark on the film world internationally far before the Matrix films, beginning her movie career in the early 90s. In 2002, she was in the midst of controversy with her shocking graphic rape scene in the Italian film Irreversible – one of the most walked-out films in the history of the Cannes Film Festival. She also posed nude while pregnant for Italian Vanity Fair magazine in 2004 in protest of Italian laws against sperm donation.

Her modeling career began in 1988 and she has appeared on numerous magazine covers and advertising campaigns throughout the world. She is currently one of the faces of Dior Cosmetics.

She’s definitely a hottie and seems intelligent too (I’ll pretend we care about that).  Let’s take a look at Monica Bellucci.
