Posted: 21 Jan 2010 08:56 PM PST Eat right, exercise… yeah, yeah, yeah – who hasn’t heard the basics? Today, I’m going to attempt to serve up at least one weight loss tip you didn’t already know about using fitness, diet, and lifestyle as my crutches. Let’s get to it. Weight Loss Tips Even the most hard core workout routine won’t help you lose weight if you can’t keep your eating under control. This truth has hampered me for years in slimming down. It’s only when your fitness AND your diet align will you actually shed the pounds. Clear or light yellow pee is a good sign. This means your drinking lots of water and water flushes waste created by the body. Plus, your also staying away from higher sugar, high cal drinks. Regular, ample sleep helps your metabolism which helps you lose weight. Get 8 at the same time every night and you’ll be better for it. All calories aren’t created equal. Spinach calories and Twinkie calories can be both 200 but your body will derive a lot more benefit from the nutrients inside the spinach than the sugar fluff from the Twinkie. Point being: Don’t cut calories blindly and think you’re automatically doing yourself a favor. Yes, calorie counting helps you but you want to make sure nutritious foods comprise the calories you’re eating and not the junk food. On the same note, you need calories for your metabolism. Don’t deprive yourself of food to lose weight. As soon as you do, you’ve lost touch with success. One last thing – and this is just from my experience – the worst thing I do to myself is quick food bursts where I eat a bunch of food at once because I’ve gone too long without eating or am in consumption mode after working out. The key from this is to temper eating when you’re extremely hungry. Don’t eat for excess, eat for supplying your body for your goals. Post from: EveryJoe |
Posted: 21 Jan 2010 06:55 PM PST Today is a sad day for Tulane and all of college football. The university confirmed this afternoon that sophomore linebacker Sule Osagiede died after a car accident earlier today in Beaumont, Texas. If you don’t know the name Osagiede, dig back in your memory a bit. He missed the 2009 year after a neck injury at the team’s camp in August, but did play often in 2008. He finished that season with seven tackles in nine games and showed a lot of promise to the future. ![]() Sule Osagiede (#43) helps Chinonso Echebelem (#24) take down Army running back Ian Smith Early today, Tulane president Scott Cowen expressed his sympathies to Osagiede’s family, and wrote in a statement,
Osagiede was undecided on a major. He is survived by parents Wisdom and Jennifer Osagiede and four siblings, and at Lamar Consilidated High School, he also lettered in track and field and was Homecoming Prince as a junior and Homecoming King as a senior. My heart goes out to everyone hurting right now. Rest in peace, Sule. Post from: EveryJoe |
Adobe Photoshop Always Scanning Your iPod Posted: 21 Jan 2010 05:35 PM PST A friend of mine emailed me today and asked me why his software, Adobe Photoshop Album Starter, opens every time he connects his iPod to his computer. His computer and his software are trying to be helpful, but most of the time in this situation I’ve never thought it was being helpful. Here’s how you try and stop it. I’m pretty certain this issue is due to a couple of different things happening. You’ve told your iPod to work and function like an external storage device (basically like another USB thumb drive or external hard drive). And/or you’ve asked Adobe Photoshop Album Starter to scan any drives looking for image content to add to your album. I believe there are a couple of things you can do if I remember iTunes and my iPod correctly. I haven’t had one in a number of years and haven’t had iTunes installed since. Next I would go into your Start-Up folder and make sure that your Adobe software isn’t included in that folder. You can also look for settings within the Adobe software that are telling it to scan your hard drives automatically for new content. If you can find a setting like that, turn it off. If you really want to make sure it’s not going to startup you can also open up msconfig and make sure everything is checked or unchecked as needed to not start on startup. You can read this earlier post of mine with instructions on how to use the msconfig controls. Post from: EveryJoe Adobe Photoshop Always Scanning Your iPod |
Posted: 21 Jan 2010 01:59 PM PST Amazon has taken the wraps off of a new development kit (KDK – “Kindle Development Kit”) for active content on the Kindle. Translation: apps and games are coming to the world’s most popular ebook reader. A beta is expected to begin for use of the KDK in February, when select software designers will be allowed to try their hand at creating interactive content for the Kindle. Amazon envisions this as an opportunity for developers to deliver something more than reading material. Handmark is already working on an interactive Zagat Guide, for example, and Sonic Boom is creating word games and crossword puzzles. EA Games is said to already be on board, as well, and is expected to bring some of its most popular franchise titles to Kindle users. The draw here for developers is obvious: Kindle is an established product with an enormous user base. Amazon’s device comes with a built-in 3G network that’s freely available to all users, so adding apps to a product like this seems like a no-brainer. Developers are being capped at 100MB for app sizes, with only 10MB and under being available to download via 3G. Anything 10MB+ will have to be handled through a computer connection. I’m intrigued to see how this plays out, especially since 1) ereaders like Kindle right now use simple black-and-white displays (color ereaders are expected in the near future), which can’t offer anything nearly as dazzling as what devices like the iPhone offer, and 2) Amazon’s device is hardly the only ereader to be treading in these waters. For simple word games and crossword puzzles, like those you’d find in a newspaper, the Kindle seems ideal, but I’m curious to see how other kinds of apps are received by users. And another thing… We have specialized apps available for smartphones such as the iPhone, Blackberry, and Palm Pre, and apps are already in the works for all sorts of tablets and digital photo frame convergence appliances. And now ereaders are adding apps as well. Are we in danger of app overload? Aren’t software makers going to tire of crafting their programs in so many different formats? And am I the only one wondering about this? And what happens when all these handheld devices converge? Apple’s big tablet device is expected to be announced next week, and there’s tons of scuttlebutt about it being not just a computer, but an ereader and communication device as well. It’s only a matter of time before standards will need to be adopted for apps, ebooks, and everything else these devices can do. Image: Amazon. Post from: EveryJoe |
Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks Videos Posted: 21 Jan 2010 12:41 PM PST One thing I particularly enjoy about my job is when I get emails about cool stuff. I really like it when the cool stuff comes in the form of videos. Anyway, I got this email about the makers of Wallace & Gromit getting together with Nintendo and coming up with three promotional shorts to publicize Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks for the DS and DSi. All three videos are around 20 seconds in length and though they’re short, they’re cute. And who know Link could drive a train? The game came out December of 2009 and I imagine this won’t be the last game in the Link “saga”. Legend of Zelda fans just can’t seem to get enough of this flute playing guy. Watch the videos and enjoy. They’re pretty much the perfect way to kill some time. Image/Nintendo Post from: EveryJoe Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks Videos |
Posted: 21 Jan 2010 11:59 AM PST The 2010 MotoGP season is just around the corner and the teams and riders are getting physically and mentally prepared to get back out on the track and thrill their fans or making the bikes as ready as possible for the rigors of racing in the fastest sport on two wheels in the world, in case of the teams. This week the teams were busy getting ready for the first test session of the season at Valencia, where they'll need to get a lot of work done tuning the bikes and preparing them to race. The teams will be looking forward to seeing the results of months and months of work getting the bikes ready and will certainly be a little nervous before the tests start. ![]() The teams and racers are getting ready for the 2010 season Tech3 Moto2 had things in full swing this week as both Raffaele de Rosa and Yuki Takahashi were on hand helping the technicians get the two bikes they'll be using ready for the test. They were adding their expertise to the changes the technicians were making to the bikes and making suggestions where they thought it was appropriate. Their main job at this time though is to stay out of the way and prepare themselves mentally and physically for the upcoming test in January. The test is going to be critical to giving them the data the technicians need to tune the bikes and the riders the time on the bikes they need to get comfortable. They only have a few days to get everything done, so the days of the tests are going to be energetic and tense for the teams involved. The most important thing could in fact be the weather. If the weather is bad the testing becomes difficult and it changes the data and riding of the racers, and doesn't usually provide them with what they need to get ready for the season. The preparation for the testing appears to be going well though, and hopefully they'll have the good weather and get the data they need to get the bikes and riders ready to race. They apparently have had to make a few changes to the bikes that will require significant testing, so if they're able to get in the testing they need because of the weather, they'll be in quite a pickle. The weather report for the days in January hasn't come in yet, so we'll just have to wait and see if the teams are able to get in the work they need to get ready to entertain us again. “Image: Zuma Press” Post from: EveryJoe |
Posted: 21 Jan 2010 08:39 AM PST Are you balding? Do you fear balding? While many women find bald me to be quite sexy, it’s rare you’ll find a man who is happy about losing the hair on his head. For generations, there have been potions and cures sold to men to help the regrow their hair. So far, there’s not been much luck, although there is a medication, Toupees don’t seem to do the trick, comb-overs are really not appealing to most women. So, some men think about turning to hair transplant surgery. To do a hair transplant though, you must have some hair still. The surgery involves taking some of the skin from your head that has active hair follicles and transplanting them into the bald or thinning areas. To watch how a hair transplant is done, click on the TV screen below. It’s interesting to see what is actually involved. ~~~ Images: PhotoXpress.com, iStock.com Post from: EveryJoe |
Does Your Wife Make More Than You? Posted: 21 Jan 2010 07:31 AM PST I make more money than my husband. Granted, he’s working on a Ph.D. right now so his earning potential is limited, but I’m still the primary breadwinner. But even after he is done, chances are that my earning potential will still be higher. I am in the minority in this area. But, apparently, not as much in the minority as I used to be. The Pew Research Center recently published a report about “the rise of wives” as breadwinners, and found that one in five marriages boasts the woman as the dominant earner. Looks like social change is coming. In fact, women are so well educated, and have such high earning potential, the roles are reversing in terms of who benefits financially from a marriage. The Washington Post offers this insight on the study’s results:
Overall, men are still the primary breadwinners in most households (especially in my corner of the world — Utah). However, it is becoming less uncommon for women to be contributing a great deal as well. And men are seeing an improvement in their fortunes as they marry. Of course, this means that the “money talk” is even more important before and during marriage than ever before. As finances continue to become more complex, it is vital that you take the time to get on the same page about money. Cleats, Real Grass May Reduce Knee Injuries Posted: 21 Jan 2010 07:24 AM PST Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) are relatively common knee injuries among athletes. The ACL is the most important of the four major ligaments that hold and stabilize the knee, which must move in several ways. The ACL attaches the thigh bone (femur) to the back of the knee and then passes down through the knee to the The tears occur most often if you’re coming to a sudden stop as the knee twists or turns, or if there’s a blow to the front of the knee. By its very nature, sports like football and soccer can cause a torn ACL. To reduce the number of injuries that occur while playing sports, researchers look into athletes, their movements and their environments to see if anything specific seems to contribute to injuries. Researchers at the Sports Medicine and Shoulder Service at the Hospital for Special Surgery looked into the role of cleats, natural grass, and artificial turf played on torn ACLs. Their results were published in the most recent issue of the Journal of Biomechanical Engineering. To do the study, the researchers used legs from eight cadavers and tested the legs:
The findings weren’t surprising because it was already known that more injuries occur on artificial turf than on grass, but this experiment showed how the injuries occurred. The least amount of strain on the leg was with with the cleats on natural grass. The other combinations provided more stress:

Rex Ryan Mouths Off About Charles Woodson Posted: 21 Jan 2010 07:23 AM PST Charles Woodson won the NFL’s Defensive Player of the Year award last week, but Rex Ryan isn’t happy about it. Ryan not only said Jets player Darrelle Revis should have got the honor, he went so far as to be crass and say, ” I would like to congratulate the people who voted for Darrelle Revis… These guys obviously really know the game.” Yikes. Woodson got twice as many votes as Revis, and has had his greatest year yet at the age of 33. More than that, however, he was a key component in turning Green Bay’s defense around. In addition, getting this honor is rare for cornerbacks. The last one to do it was Deion Sanders in 1994. What do you think? Should Woodson have received Defensive Player of the Year? Was Rex Ryan right in criticizing him? Image: Zuma Press Post from: EveryJoe Rex Ryan Mouths Off About Charles Woodson |
