Should You Have a Home Treadmill? Posted: 10 Jan 2010 08:39 PM PST Treadmills are the standard among exercise machines, but should you go so far as to have a treadmill at your home? If you have the budget and the space, this blogger says a home treadmill is a great idea. Even if you have a gym membership complete with all the equipment you could ever need, it’s a luxury option to be able to walk in the next room and get a quality 20 minutes of running in without putting on gym clothes or driving. Also, I enjoy running outside, but in these cold winter months (really cold for some), it’s nice to have a treadmill inside to log some running. Another plus is instant calorie burning. The barrier to taking off 200 calories via treadmill is nothing. Your home won’t close on during after hours or holidays. If you splurge and eat a 1,300 calorie meal, you can burn 400 (and accurately keep track of your calories) when you’re ready. My last pro is a home treadmill makes it easy to watch TV or listen to your stereo with no headphones or distractions. Now, that’s a luxury to me. A solid treadmill can start at around $500 and range all the way up to $2500 but if your needs are simple, you need not spend over $600 including taxes. The only other reason to prevent a home treadmill from becoming a reality for you is space and that’s something you either do or don’t have right now but something to consider in the future. Of course, let’s stay completely honest with ourselves. A home treadmill doesn’t equate to weight loss, easy fitness, or anything of the kind. It’s simply a tool. Your effort and dedication are what will get the job done. I think the proper perspective is to look at home treadmills as a luxury. For example, I just tested out a interval-esque workout where I logged 10 minutes, then stopped and did computer work and then repeated the process twice more, increasing my distance and calories burned in each session. I simply cannot get work in between my runs at the gym or outside. I also avoid 35 degree weather by running inside. Hence, I see a home treadmill as a luxury. In sum, anything that’s going to legitimately pay dividends in your fitness is something that’s worthwhile. If you put the treadmill in your fitness tool belt and would actually take it out and use it every now and then, it’s a worthwhile purchase. If you would buy a home treadmill because you read about it in some blog and subconsciously tricked yourself into thinking it would make a difference even though you had no intentions of extensively using it, then steer clear. Packers-Cardinals One of Best in History Posted: 10 Jan 2010 08:05 PM PST The Packers-Cardinals Wildcard Playoff game was one of the best in history. It started off with the Cardinals dominating the Packers, getting up to 17-0 by the end of the first quarter. That lead continued to the third quarter, where the Packers were still behind by three touchdowns with a score of 31-10. Things started out ugly, with the Packers turning the ball over twice in the first five minutes of the game alone. While the Packers nearly pulled off one of the best come-back victories ever, they only managed to tie the game by the fourth quarter. A missed Cardinal fieldgoal sent the high-scoring game into overtime. The Packers won the toss, and I really believed they'd pull off the victory. After all, the team that wins the coin flip usually receives, and scores. But Packer Quarterback Aaron Rodgers fumbled, and as he went down actually kicked the ball in the air. Karlos Dansby picked up the ball and ran it into the end zone. Take a look at the final play. Watch Rodgers kick up the ball as he falls: Final score? 51-45. That's 100 points, y'all! Needless to say, defense was pretty much nonexistent, but the Cardinals pulled out a final defensive play to win the game. Next, the Cardinals will head to New Orleans to play the Saints next week. Fatties Kicked Off Dating Site Posted: 10 Jan 2010 07:46 PM PST The dating site BeautifulPeople.com is known for their high standards in terms of member’s looks. After all, the site is for beautiful people and maintains that it’s “the sexiest website in the world.” And last week, they made an effort to make sure that holds true by expelling 5,000 members who had apparently gained a little holiday weight. ![]() Image: istockphoto “Five thousand members have been let go,” said Miki Haines, a spokeswoman for the site told ABC News. “Basically they all posted photographs on the site between November and the New Year, and these photographs were a little less flattering than their previous photos,” said Haines. I guess a little too much Thanksgiving turkey and Christmas cookies did them in. If you haven’t checked out the site, you should. Membership is free but there is a screening process by other members. To join BeautifulPeople.com, you upload photographs of yourself and then other members rate your looks. Prospective members are admitted to the site if they get high enough scores on their photos, but are denied admission with too many low scores. If you are hot yourself and only looking for a beautiful date, then this dating site might be a good option. Post from: EveryJoe Fatties Kicked Off Dating Site |

We’re redefining who we are, and how we communicate as a band, and as friends. The album has an emotional rawness to it that we may have shied away from in the past. Posted: 10 Jan 2010 03:05 PM PST We all know someone who feels they can handle pain on their own – they don't want to take medications, they'll just tough it out. But are they really doing the best for themselves? Or are they making it unnecessarily tougher on themselves? The answer depends entirely on the problem that is causing the pain, but in many cases, yes, they are just making it harder.
It's been proven that by getting people up and out of bed as quickly as is possible after surgery, the fewer complications, such as pneumonia or blood clots to the legs, they are likely to get. But, if you don't take the analgesic, you won't be as likely to move around and you may actually prolong your recovery. People with arthritis that causes a lot of pain should likely be taking analgesics fairly regularly. Arthritis in the hands can make it difficult to perform simple tasks, even hygiene. If the pain is too great, the tasks are often done less and less frequently, severely affecting how you live every day. If arthritis pain is affecting how you walk, then by not taking pain relief, this could affect your social activities, your ability to go out grocery shopping, to walk across your home. Not taking medication in that type of situation doesn't toughen you up, it sets you up for a poorer quality of life.
Taking Pain Medication If you've ever been in the hospital for something that requires pain relief, you may have noticed nurses offering you analgesics before you feel you really need it. When When you have pain, if you wait until the pain has peaked to take your medication, the medication cannot be as effective because it has to do too much work. However, if you take the medication as you feel the pain beginning, it can effectively prevent the pain from peaking. That is effective pain control. Addiction? Anti-inflammatories or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs) are not addictive. There isn't anything in them that you can become addicted to. NSAIDs are the most common of pain relievers offered and some kinds can be bought over-the-counter. Narcotics, or opioids, do have some addiction potential, but studies have shown that people who take them for true pain have a very small risk of becoming addicted. Of course, you could become used to the medications, which then means you may need higher doses. But that isn't the same thing as an addiction and it is a generally accepted course. As diseases and pain progress, more medication may be needed. ~~~ Images: PhotoXpress.com, iStock.com Post from: EveryJoe |

Posted: 10 Jan 2010 12:54 PM PST The 2010 MotoGP circus is going to be a different animal this year as the Grand Prix Commission of MotoGP has decided it needs to make a few changes to the rules and regulations that the races are run under. There has been lots of talk about the proposed changes to the maximum engine capacity of the power plants used to 1000cc starting in the 2012 MotoGP season. The rules makers and breakers of the MotoGP circus has decided that additional changes for the 2010 season are needed to tweak the show a bit to try to increase the entertainment value. ![]() Valentino won't be effected by the changes, he just wants to race Did you know that MotoGP contracted racers are forbidden from practicing with the motorcycles they're going to use for the races during the season and this does include during any significant gaps in the 2010 schedule. The only exceptions to this rule are on the day right after the Spanish Grand Prix (Jerez) and the Czech Grand Prix and the two days immediately after the Grand Prix at Valencia. Practicing would also be allowed by special dispensation of MotoGP. Contracted racers are also forbidden from practicing with the motorcycle they'll be using during the season in the winter times at any race venue. The only exception to this rule is the official Dorna/IRTA tests that are part of the MotoGP season. In addition, no testing is allowed from December 1 to January 31. Rookie riders have been given the right to test the bike they'll be racing on for one three day period during the months of November/December. The test schedule of rookie riders must still be given the nod by MotoGP officials, before any testing can occur. Other changes include contracted wildcard riders in the 125cc and Moto2 classes now having the right to test and practice on the bike during the two weeks before a race. This levels the ground a bit for wildcard riders, who are at a disadvantage to begin with because of their inexperience and should make them safer riders on the day of the race. At least now wildcard riders can get the practice they need to become familiar with the track and give them a chance to learn a little more about the craft of racing a sportbike, rather than just trying to learn the track. “Image: Zuma Press” Post from: EveryJoe |

Posted: 10 Jan 2010 07:38 AM PST This is a guest post from Certified Financial Planner Joel J. Ohman. People typically fall into two different and very distinct camps when it comes to one’s natural feelings about borrowing money. The first camp can best be characterized by the phrase, “I hate the feeling of owing someone money and I would rather just work this out on my own.” while the second camp can best be described by the statement, “Of course I can afford it! Why wouldn’t I want to just borrow the money? I can pay it off whenever – I’ll worry about the specifics later.”.
Here are 3 different questions that you should ask yourself and criterion that you should review, no matter what your natural inclination towards borrowing money is, before you make any type of borrowing decision whether it is something as straightforward as a credit card or whether it is something more complex like a business loan.
#1 WHAT Type of “Thing” Will You Buy with the Borrowed Money? One of the absolutely most important things to do before making a borrowing decision is to properly characterize whatever it is that you want to buy with your borrowed money. Even the most debt averse financial planners will tell you that certain things are in fact a good thing to go into debt for. More specifically, assets and even more so, appreciating assets and income producing assets can be good things to go into debt for while depreciating assets and everyday expenses are typically NOT a good thing to go into debt for. Some examples of appreciating/income producing assets that would make great candidates for taking out some debt to purchase include:
#2 HOW Will You Pay the Loan Back?If you have not developed a solid budget for what your finances will look like after the potential loan that you will assume then chances are that you have not thought through the full cost of the loan thoroughly. If you tally up all of your inflows and outflows and any monthly loan payments needed to pay off the loan puts you too close for comfort then it may be time to think of some other options or forget about borrowing money until it makes more financial sense because as any credit card minimum payment calculator will tell you if you start to find yourself bogged down with a load of debt and high interest rates then “it ain’t pretty”. #3 WHO are You Trying to Impress? The answer to this question should be a solid “No One” if you want to pass the “Should I borrow money?” test with flying colors. If your only goal in borrowing money is to keep up with the Joneses and live beyond your means in the process then do not pass go, do not collect $200, and do not take out the loan. Buying a house can be a good use of borrowed money but NOT if you are trying to buy more house than you can afford so that you can impress your golf buddies. Buying a car with borrowed money can be a good use of borrowed money if an only if you absolutely need it to get to work and you can’t afford to buy it with cash but NOT if you are just trying to buy a flashy car to impress your office mates when you pull into the office parking lot. Yes, you might find yourself tempted to take out a loan to buy something just for the way that it makes you look to others (especially if you are in the “I love to borrow” camp) but long term financial success comes with living within your means. How do YOU Decide? What are some of YOUR criteria for deciding when to borrow money? Image source: sxc.hu Post from: EveryJoe |
