Should Tebow’s Ad be Scrapped?

Posted: 25 Jan 2010 08:56 PM PST

Women’s Media Center, a New York-based group, is protesting a Super Bowl ad that will run during the game and feature Florida quarterback Tim Tebow and his mother. CBS has approved the script, which lasts for 30 seconds (fairly long for a Super Bowl ad), and the center, backed by the National Organization for Women and a bunch of other feminist groups, are not happy, to say the least.

No one knows for sure what the ad says, but critics say that the message is likely one that’s anti-abortion. It’s paid for by Focus on Family, a Christian Group that will likely talk about Tebow’s mother’s pregnancy with Tim, who doctors recommended she abort due to illness.

Says Tebow, “I know some people won’t agree with it, but I think they can at least respect that I stand up for what I believe. I’ve always been very convicted of it because that’s the reason I’m here, because my mom was a very courageous woman. So any way that I could help, I would do it.”

The ad likely cost between $2.5 and $2.8 million dollars, money that came from specific donors, not the Focus on Family general fund, according to the group. They say that they’re surprised over the controversy surrounding the commercial and think that viewers will be less opposed when they see the actual message, which a spokesman says is not political or even controversial.

Networks do sometimes reject ads, especially for the Super Bowl, when they feel that they’re strongly advocating a specific point of moral or political view. For example, in 2004, CBS rejected a United Church of Christ ad that focused on the the denomination’s stance to welcome the gay community.

Personally, I support a woman’s right to choose (in most cases). At the same time, I’m not offended by a commercial that promotes families and making the choice to have a baby. I’ll save my final opinion for when I actually see the ad, but chances are that if it met network standards, the whole “controversy” is a little out of control.

What do you think – should Tebow’s ad be removed from the lineup?

Gary Coleman Arrested – Again

Posted: 25 Jan 2010 07:54 PM PST

Gary Coleman is probably best known as the adorable Arnold on Diff'rent Strokes but things have been rough for the former child actor since his days on the hit television show.gary coleman arrest

He's suffered from substance abuse problems and has been in trouble with the law.  He was arrested for reckless driving and disorderly conduct in 2008 and he even appeared on Divorce Court with his wife, Shannon Price.

I'm guessing things didn't get settled since he was arrested yesterday in Utah on domestic violence charges

He was released on $1,725 bail today.  He also seems to have a history with domestic assault since he was hauled in after a similar incident in 2008.

Invisible Hand Gives You Shopping Upper Hand

Posted: 25 Jan 2010 07:21 PM PST

A fellow computer friend introduced me to a little web tool last week that I thought was pretty cool. It’s called Invisible Hand and it works as an add-on in my Firefox browser. It helps you save money when shopping online and that’s always cool.

invisible-hand-firefox-addon2

When you have the add-on installed and you visit a website or webpage that is a product page for an item, the Invisible Hand kicks in and searches other websites behind the scenes and then lets you know if you could save money by purchasing the item on one of the other sites.

As you can see from the screen shot above, I was looking for a Zune 120GB device on Amazon’s website. The Invisible Hand add-on fired off a status bar at the top of my browser window and let me know I could save $50 if I purchased the device at Geeks.com.

I can click on the button for the site with the lowest price and be taken immediately to the product page for the item on that site.

The only real challenge I see with the tool is that it doesn’t take into account any shipping charges that may be different between sites and in the case above, the product was currently out of stock on the cheaper website.

Perhaps these are improvements that can be incorporated in future releases of the Invisible Hand add-on.

Nancy Kerrigan’s Family Tragedy

Posted: 25 Jan 2010 03:11 PM PST

The 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic Games is less than three weeks away and one of the figure skaters who I remember fondly from the past is having a very hard week – silver medal winner, Nancy Kerrigan, is grieving the loss of her father and must be horrified by the arrest of her brother.[c] Stargaze Media Photos Photo By Glenn Weiner

Seventy-year-old Daniel Kerrigan collapsed, or fell, in his kitchen early Sunday and then was pronounced dead at the hospital.  The tragedy occurred following a struggle with his 45-year-old son, Mark.

Mark entered a plea of not guilty in court where he was ordered held on $10,000 cash bail.  He didn't have anything to say but he was reportedly weeping at one point.

Nancy's brother, who had been living with his parents since he didn't have a job, is apparently no stranger to the justice system and has a "lengthy" criminal record.

I can't even imagine what she's going through.  How do you wrap your head around the death of your father and your brother's involvement in it?  I hope that she's got a lot of support to get through this.

Black Eyed Peas Given Award By Mistake

Posted: 25 Jan 2010 02:53 PM PST

The NRJ Awards took place in France over the weekend and there was an embarrassing blunder made at the expense of the Black Eyed Peas.

Presenters Ke$ha and French choreographer Kamel Ouali accidentally called the group’s name as the winner of the "Best International Group" prize.  The actual winner was Germany's Tokio Hotel (honestly, how is that possible!?).bep i gotta feeling

The error occurred because, instead of just listing the winner inside of the envelope, all of the nominees are listed and they just called out the name of the group on top.  Well… the other presenters didn't seem to have a problem!

When Ouali apologized and announced Tokio Hotel as the winner, the crowd booed.  Here's a video of his apology (it's in French but he basically explains how he made the mistake and who the real winner is but you can hear the crowd vocalizing their disappointment).

You know what sucks the most?  The Peas had opened the show with their huge hit "I Gotta Feeling" so it's pretty shafty that they had to get embarrassed like that.  Here's the video of their (lackluster) performance.

More Non-Combat Injuries Result in Absence

Posted: 25 Jan 2010 02:45 PM PST

If you’re serving in the armed forces and you have to leave the field for medical reasons, there’s a good chance that your medical reasons have more to do with tendinitis or fractures, not obtained in combat, than in combat injuries, say researchers.

iStock_kneexrayWe see in the news about soldiers who are injured and are evacuated from combat areas. We also see stories about soldiers who are treated at military hospitals for injuries and some of the difficulties some soldiers have in reintegrating into non-military life. But in reality, 24% of soldiers must leave because of fractures, tendinitis (inflammation of a tendon) or other injuries or disorders of the musculoskeletal system. Combat injuries only come in second at 14% . These statistics were obtained from a review of the records of 34,006 members of the armed forces and a study published in today’s issue of the journal Lancet.

Other medical issues include:

  • Neurological disorders (10%)
  • Psychiatric (9%)
  • Spinal pain (7%)

These findings shouldn’t be too surprising because many of the chores and tasks done by service men and women are quite repetitive or physically stressful. Marching with their heavy gear, for example, puts a lot of strain in the hips and knees, and repeatedly lifting heavy objects or tools puts strain on the wrists, elbows and shoulders.

Which Companies are the Best to Work For?

Posted: 25 Jan 2010 07:48 AM PST

Every year, Fortune releases a list of the 100 Best Companies to Work For. These are companies that offer great benefits, a good working environment and a corporate culture that focuses on employee appreciation. In this economic climate, the competition for good jobs is fierce, but if you can land a job at one of these companies, you could be in great shape. Here are the top 10 companies to work for, according to Fortune:

  1. SASWegmansBROWNnameonly
  2. Edward Jones
  3. Wegmans Food Markets (never had a layoff in its history)
  4. Google (bonus: Google is ready to start hiring again)
  5. Nugget Market
  6. DreamWorks Animation SKG
  7. NetApp
  8. Boston Consulting Group
  9. Qualcomm
  10. Camden Property Trust

If health care is important to you, 14 of the companies on the top 100 list pay 100% of employee health premiums. These companies include Nugget Market, Boston Consulting Group, Qualcomm, Zappos.com and Whole Foods Market.

As you can see, some of these companies require specialized skills. However, some of them — like Wegmans and Nugget — will take care of you even if you aren’t specialized.

Can Anyone Beat UConn?

Posted: 25 Jan 2010 06:47 AM PST

It’s almost embarrassing, really. The UConn women’s basketball team has crushed every opponent they have played this season, even the teams ranked in the top ten.  They won 70-46 against Notre Dame, the third-ranked team in the country. If the sharp-shooting Irish can’t even give the Huskies a run for their money, who can?

Maya Moore and the UConn Huskies are taking every team in the country to school.

Maya Moore and the UConn Huskies are taking every team in the country to school.

UConn is riding an undefeated winning-streak that has carried over from last season, where they won yet another national title. Barring an upset, the Huskies are on track to win the national title again with coach Geno Auriemma at the helm.

As usual, UConn is stacked with talent — from the starting five all the way down the bench. Maya Moore and Tina Charles are the best players in the country, and all of the bench players could easily be starters at other Division I programs. Are all the best players in the country choosing to go to Connecticut? Or has Auriemma somehow cornered the recruiting market?

Where is Pat Summit and her Lady Vols? Stanford’s Tara VanDerveer and North Carolina’s Sylvia Hatchell are at a loss. These teams are good. The problem is that UConn is better.

The only other undefeated team in the country is Nebraska. And with the way they have been playing, I think they can possibly pull an upset against the Huskies.

Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait until NCAA tournament time for that showdown.

Watching Fave Team May Cause Heart Attack

Posted: 25 Jan 2010 06:30 AM PST

Sports – is there anything else that makes some men get so riled up over something that is supposed to be entertainment than sports? Picture this: Yesterday, the Indianapolis Colts versus the New York Jets: some people were screaming in encouragement as “their” team tried to win. Others were screaming in indignation as their team wasn’t doing as they iStock_manpainSmallshould. If the scenario changes, and their team does better, the screaming goes to joyful and encouraging screaming and the other team’s fans do their frustrated act. Repeat this all a couple of hours later with the New Orleans Saints and the Minnesota Vikings.

Fast forward to the upcoming Superbowl and this scenario will be played over and over again in homes across the United States and Canada.

While it may seem obvious to some, it may not be to others: Watching your favorite team play – and lose an important game – could cause a heart attack.

This finding isn’t really unusual, considering we do know that strong emotional reactions can affect the heart. But a few years ago, researchers wanted to see if there was a more direct correlation between sports championships and heart attacks, already noticed in the mid-1990s when Dutch researchers found a relationship between death due to heart problems among men with the 1996 European championship match between the Netherlands and France.

Researchers in the United Kingdom looked at men who watched World Cup matches involving England, in particular a loss to Argentina in a penalty shoot-out.

The researchers compared the number of admissions to the hospital for heart-related issues for a month before the World Cup and for a few years after. They found that there was a 25% increase on the day of the match (June 30, 1998) and the next two days then the other days. Interestingly, this only occurred for this match and not others that involved England.

“No excess admissions occurred for other diagnoses or on the days of the other England matches. The effect was the same when only the two days after the match were treated as the exposed condition. Individual analyses of the day of and the two days after the Argentina match showed 55 extra admissions for myocardial infarctions compared with the number expected.”

So guys – when it comes to the Superbowl, take it easy. It’s fun to get riled up, but consider the effects that this may have on your heart – and your life.
