Machine or Free Weights?

Posted: 27 Jan 2010 08:49 PM PST

There’s a stupid debate that still lingers on whether you should use free weights or machine weights.  The answer is you can use either.  Choose the weights that work best for you for the particular exercise and weight you’re doing.

Machine weights are going to help guide you through the perfect motion and will be easier to control.  Free weights provide a greater range of motion but require more effort from you to retain correct form.  This extra effort requires balance and will help stabilize your muscles.

Another pro for machine weights is they provide for some lifts that you wouldn’t be able to do otherwise.  For example, hamstring curls would be near impossible to do without a machine.  The alternative would be akin to taping weights to the back of your ankles.  Similarly, machines are helpful in providing safety for lifting heavier weights.  For example, a chest press machine can have a stop point for you so that you need not worry about failure on a rep.

I make most of my exercises free weights because they ooze collateral benefits (balance, stabilization) as I mentioned before.  However, machine weights may be just what beginners need to help make sure their form is on target (but you can still have bad form).

J.Lo Joins “How I Met Your Mother”

Jennifer Lopez will be taking on the role of a self-help expert on the popular CBS series, How I Met Your Mother.  The guest appearance is scheduled to air sometime this March.

Her objective is to help Barney (Neil Patrick Harris) get over his womanizing ways and she makes it her mission to transform him from a playboy-bachelor into boyfriend material.

I always find this show funny but, for whatever reason, I can't seem to remember to watch it but I will make an effort to catch this episode.  Ever since Harris came out of the closet, I find it so ironic to see him as a ladies' man.

“Gremlins” Sequel in 3D

Posted: 27 Jan 2010 08:29 PM PST

Ever since I first saw Gremlins as a little girl, I've had a soft spot for the franchise.  I watch that original movie every Christmas (it just isn't the holiday season until I see some gremlins singing carols before they murder that mean old lady) but the second movie isn't nearly as good.gremlins cover

Still, I wouldn't hesitate to give a third flick a chance especially if it was filmed in 3D.  I read on Perez Hilton that this is actually a possibility even though the potential project is very early in the development process.

Would you watch this movie?  My only real concern relates to computer generation.  The charm of some of these older movies was that the robotics were a little more realistic than some of these CGI creations.  I would hate for Gizmo to be computerized beyond recognition.

Good Charlotte Scraps Newest Album

Posted: 27 Jan 2010 08:27 PM PST

Good Charlotte have been working on a new album and I know a number of people who were really looking forward to it.  It looks like fans are going to have to wait a little longer since they have scrapped the whole thing and are starting from scratch.good charlotte

The band published the following message on their website:

"When we got back from the last trip to Australia, we had pretty much finished recording the record. I went into the studio to hear some roughs and it just wasn’t right.

I couldn’t figure it out. I was so lost. I love the songs, I love the lyrics, so what was the problem. I was just so bewildered. Devastated actually.

This had never happened. I felt crazy. Like this. I told our manager to just PAUSE everything and I need time to think. I called all the boys immediately and called an emergency meeting. Everyone sat down. And I just said ‘Guys, we gotta start over’."
And his bandmates agreed.

I was expecting everyone to freak on me and say ‘What?!’ But Billy (Martin) was the first to speak, and right away he said ‘I knew you were gonna say that. My gut is telling me the same thing. Let’s do it.’ Everyone agreed."

Well, they are back in the studio in Vancouver so I hope this is all worth it.  I'm really looking forward to hearing what they come up with.

Apple Release iPad Tablet Device

Posted: 27 Jan 2010 08:13 PM PST

Business productivity plummeted today as everyone was eagerly anticipating the latest announcement from Apple. Turns out the big deal was the release of the Apple tablet, known as the iPad. More intimate than a laptop and more capable than your smart phone.

apple-iPad

The question is who is the iPad marketed towards? Will users purchase it in addition to their iPhone and their MacBook? Will they buy it instead of one or the other? At $499 for the lowest model related to features and storage space, how much is it worth to you?

Here are the basic features available for the device:

  • 9.7" screen
  • 0.5" thick
  • 1.5 pounds
  • 16 GB – $499
  • 32 GB – $599
  • 64 GB – $699
  • Wi-Fi enabled
  • Bluetooth connectivity
  • 10 hour battery life
  • 16 GB 3G model – $629 (+ $14.99 or $29.99/mnth data plan)
  • 32 GB 3G model – $729 (+ $14.99 or $29.99/mnth data plan)
  • 64 GB 3G model – $829 (+ $14.99 or $29.99/mnth data plan)

Is all that worth it for the device? My opinion is the higher end models with more features could be a formidable replacement for a laptop, but the price difference and ongoing monthly data plans.

I’ve heard developers complain already that there’s so much difference between the iPhone and the iPad that separate versions of applications will have to be developed to take advantage of both’s strengths.

Will it replace the Kindle DX? Or the Barnes and Noble Nook? Based on price it would be a hard sell as both devices will soon be having apps functionality. It will immediately sell quite a few though just because it’s from Apple.

Settlers 7 Beta Open for the Taking

Posted: 27 Jan 2010 08:06 PM PST

The Settlers franchise is nothing new, especially since we’re on #7 now – actually more if you check out the Wikipedia page for Blue Byte.Settlers-7-Logo

In any case, the beta for Settlers 7 is now alive and well and you too can get a chance to play the newest game and help the developers work out the kinks and mishaps.

I played literally like five minutes of the game today – just enough to choose a character and basic traits and then high tailed it out of there. I suspect my laptop just isn’t going to be able to handle the online aspect of the game. I even turned the graphic settings down just about as far as they could go and still had lag issues.

I’m not sure if that’s a Beta issue but, like I said, I’m going to assume it actually has to do with my laptop.

SO. Where do you get your code for the Settlers 7 Beta, you ask. Well, thanks for asking!

Whatcha need to do is head over to Ubisoft’s website…actually, hold on. If you live in the US or the UK then this applies to you. If you live somewhere else then you’re going to have to find your answers somewhere else.

OK.

  1. Go to Ubisoft’s website here —>LINK
  2. Make sure you have a Settlers Forum name. Check it here —>LINK
  3. Go to The Settlers 7 Paths to a Kingdom Beta Event Page on FilePlanet here and sign up—>LINK

That should do you. Have fun and don’t be surprised when you see some stuff about animations not being there because it’s a Beta. I’m just sayin’.

Strep Throat: A Senior Bowl Excuse?

Posted: 27 Jan 2010 02:46 PM PST

Everyone might be talking about Tim Tebow in terms of his anti-abortion football ad, but the player and those in the NFL are more concerned with his performance at the Senior Bowl. Critics have said that Tebow can’t handle playing in the NFL, and he peaked in college, so he’s out to prove them wrong, hoping that a great team will take a chance on him come draft day.

Image: Newscom

Image: Newscom

It depends largely on how he does in the Senior Bowl…and during practice on Monday, things didn’t exactly look good. It wasn’t that he was bad, but he clearly wasn’t used to playing in an NFL manor, and critics said that he fumbled the ball and held onto it too long. It isn’t about his inability to connect with receivers. It’s about the fact that linemen in the NFL might…kill him.

Apparently, he did a bit better on Tuesday, even though he’s a bit under the weather. Everyone’s saying that he’s sick, and his agent has even reported that he has strep throat, a 103 temperature, and spent Monday night in the hospital. A spokesperson from the Senior Bowl said he’s sick, but not to that extent.

So is the “I’m sick” excuse Tebow’s (or, at least, his agent’s) plan for explaining away some of the poor performance? Maybe. Regardless, someone in the NFL is going to gobble up the player and hell be left to show the world what he can really do.

Colts Will Send Players to Pro Bowl

Posted: 27 Jan 2010 02:24 PM PST

Who really ever believed that it was a good idea to have the Pro Bowl the week before the Super Bowl? Anyone? The Colts, for one, are none too happy about it. They were up in arms about the whole thing and there were even rumors of them boycotting the game.

20100127_zaf_ss5_022

Now, apparently, the Colts have come to terms with the league and will send their guys to the game. The Colts players will go down ” via charter jet (reimbursed by the league),” hang out in Miami Sunday night and then wait for the rest of their teammates. This avoids hiking back and forth from Indianapolis to Miami.

Now that we’ve got that all worked out, does anyone really care? Seriously, it seems to be a status thing with players because as fans we could give a rip less who players in the Pro Bowl. For me at least, it’s enough to see who is getting voted in. I don’t care to watch.

Anyone else feel the same way?

Kyle Busch Racing Team?

Posted: 27 Jan 2010 01:10 PM PST

All boys grow up eventually and Kyle Busch has decided to throw his hat into the owners ring of NASCAR’s Nationwide Series by fielding two Toyota trucks for the 2010 Camping World Truck Series campaign. This comes after weeks of speculation and rumour that Kyle Busch had decided it was time to make the move up the ladder of NASCAR success by becoming an owner. In fact, as early as the November championship banquet Kyle Busch was fielding questions concerning rumours about his plans to become an owner and telling every one that he had no such plans.

The rumours were right! Kyle Busch is forming his own race team.

The rumours were right! Kyle Busch is forming his own race team.

The cool Rowdy denied any such plans up until about three weeks ago, when he just as calmly announced that he would put fielding two Toyota trucks in the 2010 Camping World Truck Series. Were not sure why he was being so sly about his plans, but we’re sure he had his reasons. The signs were kind of obvious, though, as reports had been circulating that he had been talking to Rick Ren about overseeing operation of his two trucks during the upcoming season. Now that the cat is out of the bag though, we have found out that Brian Ickler will be behind the wheel of Kyle Busch’s No. 18 Toyota truck and Kyle Busch himself will sit in the driver’s seat of the No. 56 truck. At the same time, Kyle Busch also announced that he was trying to obtain funding to field a third truck for former Camping World Truck Series Champion, Johnny Benson.

Kyle is going to be a busy man this season with all of his team owner duties combined with his driving, which he isn’t likely to give up anytime before he dies. In fact, if they can pass the physicals and tests that should be required, we could start an old drivers league, like the series golf has created for retired golfers that can’t put the club down. Mark Martin could be the first member of this fraturnity, since it appears retirement is something he plans on doing after he dies. Surely other drivers would start appearing out of the woodwork as soon as we decided to start such a league and before you know it it would have a new fan base that would give NASCAR fresh blood in the stands and more money in the bank.

Before you know it we would have a young guns series and other series for the fans to enjoy and NASCAR to grow with. The possibilities are endless if we work together toward growing the fan base of NASCAR and racing as a whole. The new jobs that would be created and old jobs that would be saved by growing the industry of racing could be impetus for even greater growth. Let’s all work together!

Apple unveils the iPad

Posted: 27 Jan 2010 11:53 AM PST

Pricing starts at $499, and it’ll be on the market in 60 days. That’s the word from Apple’s big keynote event today, where the long-awaited iPad was unveiled at last.

Calling it a “magical and revolutionary product,” Steve Jobs himself was on hand to show off the device, which he said was “better at key tasks” than the iPhone or a standard laptop.

ipad_hero

Somehow, Apple managed to make fulfilling the most reasonable and predictable predictions feel exciting and revolutionary. It’s at once simplicity incarnate, and completely revolutionary. Everything UI wise is scaled down, made ultra-simple yet still attractive.

Let’s take a look at the key specs:

  • Standard models: 16GB $499 / 32GB $599 / 64GB $699
  • 3G models: 16GB $629 / 32GB $729 / 64GB $829
  • 9.7″ IPS fully capacitive touchscreen
  • .5″ thin
  • 1.5 lbs
  • 1Ghz Apple A4 processor
  • 802.11n built-in wifi
  • 3G is optional via 2 plans from AT&T: 250MB/month for $14.99, or unlimited data for $29.99
  • Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR built-in
  • Accelerometer
  • Compass
  • Speaker
  • Microphone
  • 30-pin connector
  • 10-hour battery life for constant use, 1 month standby
  • Synchs over USB just like iPhone & iPod

The iPad will be available in standard configurations in 60 days, and the 3G models will arrive in 90 days.

ipad_2up_hometimes

The UI is everything you’d expect, looking basically like an extra-large iPhone. You slide to unlock the screen, and use flicks and gestures just like the iPhone. It even runs all standard iPhone apps, either at their original size, or at 2x size. It’s also going to run customized games, and perhaps most notably, ebooks.

iBooks is the new ereading app, and it’s one of the biggest pushes of the device. There’s an entire iBooks Store that works basically the same as iTunes, only with books. Apple has established partnerships with five major publishers — Hachett, HarperCollins, MacMillan, Penguin, and Simon & Schuster — and iBooks is set to take on Kindle with a very slick, full color UI that uses the open source ePub format and comes with nice little extras like letting you change your reading font at will. Prices for ebooks were not yet announced.

Jobs emphasized the iPad’s use as a casual media device used best for surfing the web, viewing or listening to personal media, and checking email. All of these features are built into the device of course, including YouTube and YouTube HD, which were shown off at an impressive frame rate with even full-screen videos. Apple also noted that “there’s no wrong way to hold” the iPad, showing that it can be held any way you like, and what’s on screen will auto-adjust to suit you.

For typing, the iPad has a huge, on-screen QWERTY keyboard, which looks quite impressive. There are other keyboards for number input (calculator standard input) and date/time.

ipad_2up_fbgame

An iPad SDK is releasing today, and Apple is expecting an explosion of new apps similar to what happened when the iPhone first released. Accessories for the iPad include a dock/stand, a full keyboard with built-in dock/stand, and a carrying case that doubles as a stand.

Sadly, it looks like there’s no webcam built in, and multitasking apps was not addressed during the press conference, so very likely it’s something that’s been left out for a future release.

On the whole, it looks like the iPad is intended to be a new casual computing device, not meant to replace the laptop or desktop, but complement them with the ability to “hold in your hand” all of the content and media you want to use.
