Mainstream Drinks Going Back to Real Sugar

Posted: 11 Jan 2010 08:45 PM PST

There’s been a new happy place that’s arrived in the Bean household recently. First it was Pepsi Throwback and most recently it was the discovering of Heritage Dr. Pepper. Both companies have now released their old recipes for their drinks using real sugar again instead of the high-fructose corn syrup.

old-school-sodas

My wife has been on a bit of a mission in recent months to try to eliminate or drastically reduce the amount of foods we’re feeding our children with high-fructose corn syrup as one of the main ingredients. My personal feelings about the health implications of high-fructose corn syrup is still undecided, but what’s absolutely a certainty is that these old-school versions of some of my favorite carbonated drinks taste far better with real sugar than the current sweeteners being used.

First, some friends of ours discovered "Mexican" Coke, or Coke that was made and intended to be distributed south of the border that uses real sugar instead of the high-fructose corn syrup.

Then we discovered this Pepsi Throwback and Heritage Dr. Pepper. It’s so good! You may think I’m crazy or you may believe me. What I know for sure though is that these bottlers and others should keep these real sugar options of their products available all the time, not just on a limited time basis.

Useful and Free Storage Containers

Posted: 11 Jan 2010 08:32 PM PST

If you’re looking to store things, most of us immediately look for a cardboard box or if we want to spend some money, perhaps a Rubbermaid tote or container. I believe I’ve found another great option and they were FREE!

tidy-cat-storage

Yep, these plastic kitty litter pails have made a great storage option for a variety of things out in our garage. At first my kids and my wife didn’t like the idea of using them for something else, but when you wash them out they make a perfect and somewhat weather proof storage option.

They will hold a ton of Lego’s, K’nex, Polly Pockets, Hot Wheels and other kid’s toys. The stack pictured above is holding all of our Christmas decorations. I stored 7 sets of outdoor icicle lights in one of them. They’re also doing a great job of holding and protecting the variety of glass Christmas tree decorations and ornaments.

You’ve got to think about what items you can fit into the lid area easily, but once the items are put away and the lids are tight, they’re basically water proof and with their rigid plastic sides also provide a good layer of protection that’s not there with cardboard or thinner plastic storage bins.

Should You Even Count Your Reps?

Posted: 11 Jan 2010 08:11 PM PST

If you’re willing to crawl to different spots of information, every now and then you find a gem. Two days ago, I found an article that made my fitness paradigm shift. In the fitness files of my brain, it was as if I heard that “If a tree falls in the forest” riddle.  The article is The Perfect Rep by Christian Thibaudeau on TMuscle.com.

“The Perfect Rep” ebs and flows in and out of power packed, rich information, but the part that stuck highest on my wall is counting reps.  The point of weight lifting and fitness is not to reach 10 or 12 reps for each set.  It’s to get the most benefit you can from the exercises you do.  Christian emphasizes quality over quantity and if you read the whole article until the end, you’ll be treated with a super video that makes it all come together.

I still don’t completely discount counting reps if you’re a beginner or novice to fitness.  The reason being is you probably won’t be certain on when to start and stop.  Stated another way, beginners simply lack the experience that tells them when to stop and when to keep going.  The best cure is to create a count.  However, for the experienced and even the more disciplined beginners, why else would you really even count your reps?

Fitness isn’t a test where a teacher is going to come up behind you and say, “Ah hah, you only did 7 and that’s not a full set.”  Morever, if you have the initiative to improve yourself, it’s really counter intuitive to think you’d try to cheat yourself out of a full workout by subconsciously dropping reps to make things easier on yourself.

A dedicated lifter would never intentionally cheat themselves, but maybe some of us unintentionally are by staggering through arbitrary numbers that we began counting simply because we played follow the leader to someone else who was playing the very same game.

As Christian layers again and again in his media, focus on the quality of the rep and ignore the quantity.  This is great stuff.  I’ve never worked out with this specific mindset – and this isn’t to say I didn’t want quality but my mind wasn’t focused precisely on this message.  After reading this article, I’m honing my focus on the principles Christian illustrates in “The Perfect Rep” and I encourage you to do the same.

LLoyd Banks Arrested for Assault & Robbery

Posted: 11 Jan 2010 08:08 PM PST

G-Unit member, Lloyd Banks is currently being held in a jail in Kitchener, Ontario in Canada. The rapper has been held in the jail since Saturday morning after he was arrested for assault and robbery.20061010_kaz_k03_017_picnik

He along with three others were said to have assaulted the promoter after Lloyd performed at Club NV on Friday.

Banks’ legal counsel in Canada, Patrick Ducharme, said, “There has been an agreement between the prosecution and defense for his release and the release for each of the individuals. I expect for him to be released tomorrow morning. It’s just a question of posting some bail, which I’m going to do. I’m going up there tonight with the money, and they’ll be released sometime tomorrow morning.”

Audio from the alleged victim, Chris Hines, had him explaining what happened. Chris can be heard as saying, “We got into a confrontation, and of course, they assaulted me, they kept me there for a little while, assaulted me for a few minutes, like 20 minutes, 30 minutes. They had me there for quite some time.”

On Tuesday, a bail hearing will be held.  For Banks, the bail is $50, 000 and for the others the bail is $25,000.

Working With ASP.NET Reporting Tools

Posted: 11 Jan 2010 07:12 PM PST

I continue to learn more new things as I expand my skills with ASP.NET development. One of the newest things I’ve begun learning to use are the free reporting tools that are available with ASP.NET development.

ASP-NET-Report-Development

Every time I use the Microsoft ReportViewer control for my ASP.NET development projects I learn a new trick or method for getting more out of the controls. One challenge I’ve run into today is trying to figure out a way to enter a checkbox list functionality into a report. For example, a section could have five different options and they’ve chosen the 3rd option. I want to both display the one they’ve chosen and the four other options that were choices.

A checkbox list control is super easy to add into a normal .aspx page, I was hoping/expecting it to be as easy for a report. Not so much, or at least not that I’ve discovered yet.

Another small irritation I’ve come across is some of the default formatting settings that are pre-defined. The real annoying one today was the padding settings for each report field I added. The default was 2pt on all sides of the field. I ended up changing all of these to 1pt or 0pt in some situations. Doing that manually was very annoying. If you’ve got a solution for that, please let me know.

Oh yeah, it also appears the "Can Grow" and "Can Shrink" settings don’t work as expected. I’d appreciate a solution to that too if you have one.

Packers Loss Not Entirely Bad

Posted: 11 Jan 2010 05:05 PM PST

The Packers-Cardinals game probably kept you on the edge of your seat… if you tuned in during the fourth quarter, that is. Up until that point the game was downright boring. The Packers looked every bit the young and inexperienced team they are. Their second half comeback attempt was admirable, but even that was riddled with errors and missteps. All in all, though, if you’re a Packer fan, there are some good things you can take away from the game and season.

20100110_zaf_e47_462.jpg

Winning Season
After a dismal season last year, the Packers were awarded an easier schedule. They took advantage of it, and ended up with a wildcard playoff berth. Does that mean that next year they’ll go back to a losing season? No. They have gained the confidence and experience necessary to handle a tougher schedule. Watch for the Packers to put up winning numbers next year as well.

Rodgers Got Over His Playoff Nerves
There is no denying that quarterback Aaron Rodgers had the playoff jitters. His slow start was a direct result of inexperience. But this game will serve as a good reminder on what he has to do next season to get it together and win. Rodgers helped lead the team to a comeback that was impressive, and this will give him confidence next season.

Young Team, But Matured
For the first several years into Ted Thompson reign, none of the “older” players were safe. Thompson believes in a young team, but if he keeps the team intact from this point on, these young players will gain the maturity needed to win. Thompson has to admit now that getting rid of every single veteran you have isn’t always a good idea.

Packers Remain Relevant
One of the questions of Brett Favre leaving the team was whether or not they’d remain relevant without him. I’m not talking wins or playoffs, but rather getting games featured with top commentators, better game times, and better postgame coverage. As a fan that sat through the 70s and 80s Packers, I know what it’s like when no one cares about your team. Coaches used to threaten to send their poor performing players to Green Bay as a punishment back in the day. No one wants to go back to that.

Successful Transition of Leadership
It’s hard to follow a long-time quarterback, and even harder to follow a legend. There is an intangible quality that a team gets with an experienced quarterback. Look at the way Arizona played, and the way Kurt Warner (who actually threw more touchdowns than he did missed passes) was able to find the holes in the Packers defense and lead the team. That leadership is something that is learned, and when you lose it, it takes a while to get it back.

The Packers still have a way to go in that respect, but they’re on their way. Packer fans have a lot to look forward to next year.

Harrison Ford on Possible “Indiana Jones 5″

Posted: 11 Jan 2010 04:17 PM PST

So, would Harrison Ford really be up to starring in yet another Indiana Jones film? According to him, he says he’d love to as long as the script is good and he’s still in good shape.

In an interview on Friday, he admitted, “I don’t think I’ll do it in a wheelchair. George [Lucas] is working on an idea, and if it comes to a fruitful stage, all of us are very interested in making another.”

20090912_zaf_g84_017_picnik

He adds, “I think it would be interesting to advance the understanding of the character, as we always have had that ambition throughout the series. I think it would be interesting to deepen the relationship between he and his son [Mutt, played by Shia LaBeouf] and play on that relationship. … It’s full of opportunity. The series is full of opportunity.”

As long as the script’s good and Harrison is in the movies, I can’t see why another Indy movie wouldn’t do well. You’ve got to admit, it’s an interesting thought!

Simon Cowell Leaving “American Idol”

Posted: 11 Jan 2010 03:55 PM PST

Often seen as the face of American Idol, judge and producer, Simon Cowell has revealed that he will be ending his position as a judge on the popular reality television show. So, what will the wealth Simon Cowell be moving on to next?20091202_zaf_e30_145

Well, he revealed that his hit show in Britain, The X Factor would be receiving a spot on FOX’s schedule next year. Cowell makes about 36 million a year on Idol, and could be making even more with his show The X Factor if it takes off.

Cowell says of Idol, “I was offered a lot of money to stay on. But that wasn’t the reason behind it. I wanted to do something different. I wanted a new challenge.”

As for who will be replacing Simon, FOX chairman, Peter Price says, “We have to take our time on that. We have to make sure the chemistry of the judges is as good as it can be.”

With Paula Abdul leaving the show, Simon Cowell leaving next season and the addition of new judges Kara DioGuardi and Ellen DeGeneres, the show won’t be what it was!

Will any of you guys be watching the show after Simon leaves?

Get in Shape, Save Money on Health Costs

Posted: 11 Jan 2010 08:56 AM PST

One of the most popular New Year’s resolutions is to get in shape and/or lose weight. I should know. My resolution this year is related: To live healthier. Of course, in order to live healthier, one has to exercise and eat right. The good news is that these habits are more likely to help you save money overall in health costs. If you are taking care of yourself, you are less likely to end up with the costly diseases associated with obesity, poor eating habits and a sedentary lifestyle.

390607320_c2d49e27a3But it can be expensive to go to the gym, or to buy expensive home exercise equipment, like a treadmill. Happily, though, I received an email recently on behalf of the American Institute of Healthcare & Fitness, outlining some helpful strategies on how you can get a great body for a lower cost. Here are some of the suggestions from Director of Fitness & Wellness, John Rowley, on small investments that can yield big exercise health results:

  1. Adjustable dumbbells
  2. Jump ropes
  3. Resistance tubing
  4. Exercise DVDs

He also recommends using things you already have, by going for walks, using your stairs for exercises, and playing sports as a family. He points out that you can get discounts at your local recreation department, and I would add that if you are a student, or a spouse of a student, you can get access to university facilities at a discounted price.

In the end, you don’t have to spend a ton of money to get into shape. All you need are a few items, and desire to make time to exercise.
