Healthiest Artificial Sweetener

Posted: 02 Apr 2010 04:12 PM PDT

Artificial sweeteners are by definition unnatural. While artificial sweeteners can sweeten your favorite food or drink without adding calories, many health experts are wary about how these substances can negatively affect your body.

When searching for the healthiest artificial sweetener, it’s easiest to first eliminate those that are most criticized. Saccharin, which is sold under the brand name “Sweet ‘N Low”, has been criticized for years. In fact, saccharin actually caused cancer in lab rats.

Aspartame is another artificial sweetener. It is sold as “Equal” and “NutraSweet”. While it isn’t as harshly criticized as saccharin, a number of studies have had less than glowing conclusions.

Other artificial sweeteners that are on the market include Acesulfame, Neotame, Stevia and Tagatose. These options are either inadequately tested or have iffy side effects.

That leaves one standing as the healthiest artificial sweetener: sucralose. Also known as Splenda, most people in the medical community consider Splenda to be safe. Though not everyone is convinced, the fact that Splenda is actually made from real sugar helps most experts breathe a sigh or relief.

Playboy Golf Scramble to Unemployment Line

Posted: 02 Apr 2010 03:35 PM PDT

Talk about a great week gone bad. To begin the week, Ken Hamlin of the Dallas Cowboys was hamming it up with playmates at the Playboy Golf Scramble. To finish the week, Hamlin learned he was being released by the Cowboys. Hamlin was to be paid approximately $5.6 million for the 2010 season.

Hamlin began his Cowboys career in 2007. After a fantastic first year in Dallas, he signed a deal worth almost $40 million. But his play fell off, especially last year, and the Cowboys decided to go in a different direction.

Also attending the Playboy Golf Scramble, which took place in Industry Hill, California at Pacific Palms Resort, were fellow Cowboys Terence Newman and Miles Austin. Luckily for that duo, both Newman and Austin remain on Dallas’ roster.

Joining Hamlin in the unemployment line on Friday was Flozell Adams. Flozell the Hotel had been with the Cowboys since 1998, when he was drafted out of Michigan State in the second round. In his Cowboys career, the 6-foot-7, 240-pound offensive lineman made the Pro Bowl five times. Unfortunately for Flozell, he apparently didn’t even get to enjoy the playmates prior to losing his job.

Ron Artest Reality Series: “They Call Me Crazy”

Posted: 02 Apr 2010 02:38 PM PDT

Ron Artest of the Los Angeles Lakers is one of the most colorful characters in the NBA. Now, a worldwide audience will be able to see what makes Artest tick. According to THR, Ron Artest will star in a reality series called “They Call Me Crazy”.

The reality series, which will be developed and produced by Tijuana Entertainment, E1 Entertainment and Ron Artest himself, will tackle the many trials and tribulations of Artest’s personal life off the basketball court. Artest will also incorporate his music label — Tru Warier — into the reality series.

The story of Ron Artest is a roller-coaster. Even though he’s a very good basketball player who is one of the best defenders of his generation, oftentimes his troubles have overshadowed his positives. When he wasn’t attacking fans in the stands, he was admitted to being drunk during games … among other transgressions.

This season with the Lakers, Artest has been on his best behavior. Once his “They Call Me Crazy” reality show begins filming, we’ll see if he keeps being the good guy or if he goes back to his crazy ways.

Kobe Bryant Signs Extension with Lakers

Posted: 02 Apr 2010 02:36 PM PDT

While nobody really thought Kobe Bryant would leave L.A., Kobe made it official on Friday. The 31-year-old shooting guard signed an extension with the Los Angeles Lakers that runs through the 2013-14 campaign. Salary figures weren’t immediately released by the team.

“Kobe has been a cornerstone of the Lakers for well over a decade, helping to lead us to four NBA championships and in the process developing into one of the greatest players in basketball history,” said Mitch Kupchak, the GM of the Lakers.

Even though Kobe has a ton of mileage, he’s still playing at an amazingly high level. This year, the reigning NBA champion is averaging 27.2 points, 5.3 rebounds and 5.1 assists, while shooting 46.4% from the floor and 81.5% at the line. Led by Kobe, the Lakers are 54-21 and will easily finish with the top seed in the Western Conference.

The question now is how many championships Kobe will win. He has a very good supporting cast, a fantastic head coach and a team with deep pockets. If I had to guess, I’d say Kobe wins at least six NBA championships. What do you think?

Garnett Fined for “Michael F***ing Jordan”

Posted: 02 Apr 2010 07:55 AM PDT

The NBA was not amused when Kevin Garnett referred to Kevin Durant as “Michael Fucking Jordan” after a recent loss. Garnett, who was pissed because Durant almost shot as many free throws as the entire Celtics team, was fined $25,000.

Here’s the video of Kevin Garnett cursing.

The exact quote from KG was: “I thought we were playing Michael Fucking Jordan tonight the way he was getting the whistle. Durant damn near shot more free throws than the whole team,"

While Garnett may have had a point, it’s more likely that he’s just upset that the Celtics are no longer legit NBA championship contenders. On top of that, Garnett is no longer the superstar he once was in his prime. Nowadays, he averages 14.3 points, 7.6 rebounds and 2.7 assists. His numbers haven’t been that poor since his rookie when he was 18 years old.

Shaun Rogers Arrested for Gun Possession

Posted: 01 Apr 2010 08:55 PM PDT

Shaun Rogers, a defensive lineman for the Cleveland Browns, was arrested on Thursday for being caught with a loaded gun at Hopkins International Airport in Cleveland. He’s being charged with a third degree felony.

Rogers began his career in 2001 with the Detroit Lions. He played for the Lions until the 2008 season when he joined the Browns. With the Browns, Rogers has been one of the better nose tackles in the NFL. Last year, he missed the final five games of the season due to injury.

The 31-year-old was being counted on as being a large part of the Browns’ team in 2010. At 6-foot-4 and 350 pounds, large may be an understatement.

Legal experts are already saying Rogers could be in a heap of trouble. It’s likely he will see federal charges. And it’s even more likely he will at the very least be suspended for a game or two by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell.

Guns and athletes have been a hot topic lately after Gilbert Arenas’ incident. Arenas ended up getting suspended for the rest of the NBA season in addition to be ordered to pay a fine, do community work and live in a halfway house for 30 days.
