Considering Surgery for your Back Pain

Posted: 13 Apr 2010 05:39 PM PDT

Chronic back pain is always irritating, but it can become debilitating and signify the presence of a more serious condition after a long period of time. Although many cases of chronic back pain will eventually disappear after prolonged physical therapy and/or medication, it is important to recognize when you should go ahead and pursue surgery for relief of your back pain.

Back surgery

First, it is important to recognize what kind of back pain you have. If the pain starts in your back and goes down your leg, below the knee, that is a sign that you should consider surgery. Another indicator is that the pain has not gotten any better since it started, which may mean that, if left untreated, the pain will not go away.

If your back pain stops you from doing the things that you would normally do, that is a prime reason to consider back surgery. Pain that has persisted for more than a few months is generally a reason to consider surgery. This means that your pain is approaching chronic levels and may show no sign of slowing down.

The source of your pain is also important to consider. If your pain is a result of heavy lifting, direct injury, or something similar, it is important to first get your back checked out by a doctor. Once you have decided whether the pain is something that can be treated or if it is something that will stay, then you can consider surgery.

Deformities or other conditions such as scoliosis (curvature of the spine), kyphosis (humpback), spinal stenosis, degenerative disc disease and others may require surgery if they cause nerve compression or get progressively worse.

There are different types of back surgery, including discectomy (removing the herniated portion of the disc), laminectomy (removing bone overlying spinal canal), fusion, artificial disks and much more. Consult your doctor and even get a second opinion before making a decision about back surgery.

Jobs in the Forensic Field

Posted: 13 Apr 2010 05:28 PM PDT

If you are looking for an interesting, challenging career, you should consider getting your degree in criminal justice. With a criminal justice degree, you don’t necessary have to go on to become a police officer, paralegal or attorney. In fact, several jobs in the field of forensics which require a criminal justice degree are both lucrative and stimulating.

Murder Case

Crime Scene Investigator – With a degree in criminal justice or criminology, you can become a crime scene investigator. The main responsibilities of this job include the collecting and packing of evidence from crime scenes. Evidence can be anything from blood and fingerprints to firearms and skeletal remains.

Forensic Scientist – Once a crime scene investigator has gathered and logged the evidence, it’s the job of the forensic scientist to analyze the evidence to help solve the crime. Though many forensic scientists have a degree in criminal justice, they also must take a lot of courses in the sciences, such as biology, chemistry, genetics or microbiology. A forensic scientist may play a key role in proving the innocence or guilt of the accused.  Most forensic scientists work for government crime labs at the local, state or federal level. They are often called open to testify in court about their findings and conclusions.

These jobs have been popularized in recent year because of shows like CSI: Miami, and there continues to be a demand for employees in the forensics field.

Finding a Job: Resume Formats

Posted: 12 Apr 2010 08:36 PM PDT

If you are looking for a job, one of the first things you should do is write your resume. Though you could pay a resume writing service to do it for you, writing your resume yourself is actually a good exercise in identifying your strengths and weaknesses in relation to your career field.

Resume

You can choose from a variety of resume formats. The three most common formats are chronological, functional and a combination of the two.

A chronological resume is probably the most traditional. You begin this resume by placing your name and contact information at the top, and then listing your work experience from the most recent to least. This chronological list should include the dates of employment, name of employer, job title and basic duties for each job. If you have large gaps in employment or little work history, this type of resume format is probably not for you. The chronological list will emphasize those gaps and may look bad in the eyes of a potential employer. People favor chronological resumes when they want to show stability and increasing responsibilities over a period of time.

A functional resume is terrific option if you are switching career fields, returning to the workforce, or have little work history. With the functional resume, you stress achievements and skills, rather than work history and job duties. A functional resume should show your worth to a potential employer. Be specific when listing your achievements. For example, your list might include: “Increased team sales by 70% in a six-month period.”

The best bet is to create a combination resume. As with the other formats, begin with your name and contact information. Next you should proceed with a short work history section. In this section, don’t be detailed or give dates, merely list previous employment that you are trying to highlight. Underneath that section, emphasize your achievements, skills, certifications and education.

Most employers and job candidates are most familiar with the traditional chronological resume. However, a resume that combines elements from both the chronological and functional resume formats may be the best way to sell yourself to potential employers.

Good luck!

How Stress Relates to Back Pain

Posted: 12 Apr 2010 08:34 PM PDT

Reducing stress in our lives is something that we should always strive to do, no matter the consequences. Stress can have a direct effect on our bodies, causing pain, discomfort, and fatigue when we should have none at all. It has become accepted that stress is one of the main causes of back pain, so it is important to try and control your stress.

Although stress is a condition of the mind, there is an important distinction to be made between stress-related back pain being imaginary and it being real. The latter is true: studies have shown that an increase in stress can cause increased levels of muscle tension that, when prolonged, irritate the spine enough to be a major source of back pain.

When we become emotionally stressed and our muscles become tense, they constrict blood flow by squeezing the blood vessels. When this happens, the back and the neck lose their normal amount of blood flow. The way that the body signals this occurrence to the rest of the body is through pain, so it is important to control this in order to reduce the amount of back and neck pain that is caused.

This also weakens the muscles, and weaker muscles are much more prone to strains and injury. If you happen to injure your back through improper lifting or another source of direct strain, then you are more likely to have long-term pain that is more difficult to combat than it would have been should you have lacked stress.

To reduce stress in your life, get proper sleep and do things to relax. Simple meditation exercises can relieve stress and help avoid back pain. Here is a basic breathing exercise for meditation that you may find will help reduce stress.

Chilaquiles for Cinco de Mayo

Posted: 12 Apr 2010 08:23 PM PDT

From World Food and Wine, you can find this delicious recipe for Chilaquiles. Easy to make, they are layered like lasagna. This is the perfect dish for Cinco de Mayo. Grab a cold beer or an icy Margarita to go with the chilaquiles and you’ll be set.

Serves: 4

Ingredients:

Cinco de MayoFor the cooked chicken:

  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • 1 onion, quartered
  • 2 cloves of garlic

For the tomato sauce:

  • 2 onions, finely chopped
  • 1 garlic chopped very small
  • 12 tomatoes peeled and seeded and pureed
  • 1 Tbsp cilantro, minced
  • salt and pepper, to taste
  • 2 Tbsp Tabasco sauce if you want it hot (optional)

Plus, you’ll need:

  • 4 round corn tortillas
  • Sour cream, diluted with a small amount of water
  • 1/2 lb manchego cheese
  • 1/2 pound mozzarella cheese

Directions:

  1. Cut the tortillas into strips.
  2. Cook chicken with a little water, the quartered onion, a pinch of salt and two cloves of garlic. Cover, cook slowly over a medium heat.
  3. Once the chicken is fully cooked, place chicken on a plate. Cool until you are able to handle it.
  4. Throw away the garlic and onion.

Making the tomato sauce:

Saute the chopped onion and garlic in some olive oil. Once the onion is translucent, add tomatoes, cilantro and Tabasco sauce, over medium heat for 10 minutes. Salt and pepper to taste. Shred the chicken and place in sauce, lower heat and cook for a few minutes to absorb some of the flavors from the sauce. Do not over cook.

Frying the corn tortillas:

Deep fry the corn tortillas. When they are crisp, remove and drain on paper towels.

Assemble:

Set the chilaquiles like lasagna. Use a large lasagna pan and layer the following:

  • tortillas
  • chicken in sauce
  • sour cream {diluted in water}
  • cheese

Repeat layers and finish with cheese and sour cream. Bake at 325 degrees F for about 45 minutes.
