Countdown to the Double Down

Posted: 07 Apr 2010 08:25 PM PDT

As our country’s fast food addiction continues, the food and drinks from popular eateries get bigger and bigger. Now KFC is releasing the Double Down sandwich, and get this…it has no bun.

The sandwich features two boneless white meat chicken filets as the “bread” with two slices of bacon, two slices of cheese and their special Colonel’s Sauce in the middle.  According to KFC, it’s “so meaty, there’s no room for a bun.”

Most Financially Successful Sports Franchises

Traditionally lists of this kind were dominated by soccer teams courtesy of their legions of fans all over the world. But the global recession has brought about a changing of the guard. Here are the top six most financially successful sports franchises in the world.

Manchester United

1. Manchester United Football: $1.87 Billion

Soccer is the most popular sport in the world. Period. And Manchester United, worth almost $2 billion is at the top of the heap. With revenue like this, soccer teams can afford the astronomical sums they pay their players and Manchester United can afford to pay more than anyone. Global TV revenue and huge corporate endorsements have made Manchester United the team to beat.

2. Dallas Cowboys: $1.65 Billion

America's team will soon be able to buy the United States if things keep going the way they are. The Cowboys are the wealthiest team in the NFL. And in North America for that matter. With a massive, new, billion dollar stadium featuring deluxe boxes and loges, the Cowboys are poised to increase their net worth sooner rather than later. How about them Cowboys?

3. Washington Redskins: $1.56 Billion

The Redskins and Cowboys have been rivals on the field for decades. And it's a neck and neck race off the field as well. It appears some of that bailout money has gone to buy Redskin season tickets. Sure they haven't won a Superbowl in decades but that doesn't stop the faithful from packing the stands.

4. New York Yankees: $1.5 Billion

With a net worth of more than a billion, this is something the Yankees can take pride in. A huge fan base, a tradition of winning championships and enough corporate sponsors to stock their own league, the Yankees will not be hard up for cash any time soon. Of course if those player salaries keep going up…

5. New England Patriots: $1.36 Billion

The team that Tom Brady built isn't hurting where it counts apparently. And yet, it wasn't so long ago that the Patriots were floundering both on and off the field to the extent that there was talk of moving the franchise. Now with a new stadium, an all-star roster and massive payroll, the team is one of the best in the league. And one of the richest.

6. Real Madrid Football: $1.35 Billion

Funny how 5 of the 6 teams on this list are football teams. Well, in name only. Football has replaced baseball as the #1 sport in North America and soccer (or football for true fans) dominates the rest of the world. And Real Madrid is one of the forerunners in the game. By closing land use deals with the government and corporate interests, the club became debt free and all of the money generated by a gigantic, rabid fan base has allowed the team to generate revenue of epic proportions.

And there you have it. The economic shake up has shaken up this list as well with NFL teams ranking higher than they have in the past. Time will tell if an economic recovery will shift the balance of power again.
