Regulators Seize Failed SC Bank Posted: 10 Apr 2010 09:21 PM PDT The failure of Beach First National Bank, a small bank located in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, brings the year’s tally of failed banks to 42. Regulators have moved in and seized the bank in a continued attempt to clean up after the banking crisis meltdown that has left a huge strain on the economy. ![]() Image: istockphoto Bank of North Carolina will assume all of the failed bank’s deposits, which are comparatively small. While First National had about $585.1 million in total assets, Washington Mutual, the largest U.S. bank to fail due to the crisis, had $307 billion in assets. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp’s Chairman Sheila Bair predicts that bank failures will peak in the third quarter of this year. Bank failures have skyrocketed since 2007, when only three banks failed; 2008 saw 25 banks fail and 2009 saw 140 banks fail. However, the rate of bank failures has not nearly reached the levels seen in 1989, when 534 banks were seized due to the savings and loan crisis. Post from: EveryJoe Regulators Seize Failed SC Bank |
Posted: 10 Apr 2010 09:17 PM PDT Osteomalacia is one of many conditions that can cause back pain. Although back pain is just one of many symptoms of osteomalacia, it is one of the first recognizable symptoms. If you body doesn’t have enough vitamin D or is unable to metabolize the vitamin, that can bring about osteomalacia. This condition causes your bones to become softer over time. Your bones may even start to bend under the pressure of your own body weight. ![]() Image; istockphoto The type of back pain associated with osteomalacia is pain along your spinal column. While the muscles in your back won’t necessarily hurt, they will become weaker. This condition also makes your much more vulnerable to suffering from compressed vertebrae. To be diagnosed with osteomalacia, you will need to have a blood test. X-rays are also useful to see how spread the condition is in your body. If the condition is advanced, many bone fractures will likely be seen in the X-rays. Once diagnosed with osteomalacia, your doctor will likely put you on a diet that is high in vitamin D and calcium. You may also be advised to add phosphorus to your diet. Vitamin D, calcium and phosphorus will help make your bones sturdier and may even be able to start reversing the effects of osteomalacia. In regards to back pain caused by osteomalacia, the change in your diet should help. You may also be given a back brace to help the bones in your back heal in correct alignment. If your vertebrae damage is extensive, surgery may become an option. Post from: EveryJoe |
Plants vs. Zombies: Casual Gaming Done Right Posted: 09 Apr 2010 10:59 PM PDT The premise is absurd: your house is under attack by a variety of zombies — zombies wearing cones/buckets/football gear, zombies reading newspapers, zombies with backup dancers — and it’s up to you to stop them. How? Not with shotguns or rocket launchers like Left 4 Dead would have you suspect, and not with careful evasion, a la Resident Evil. You’ll ward off the shambling legions of undead by carefully planting a garden. As you can probably tell, Plants vs. Zombies is not the kind of game that’s going to take itself seriously, hence the “casual gaming” genre designation. To grizzled hardcore gamers that cut their teeth on the brutal games of yore, “casual gaming” is a nice way to say “worthless fluff”. Discounting Plants vs. Zombies based on this bias is not a wise decision, though, as it will deprive you of a genuinely fun and unique gaming experience that is sure to bring a laugh or two. ![]() Image: GamesRader.com First of all, Plants vs. Zombies is a PopCap game. Anyone who has played a PopCap game will now close this review and download Plants Vs. Zombies immediately because this is a developer that is dedicated to the kind of gaming that everyone enjoys. PopCap games are the ones that you show your girlfriend and after ten minutes, you’re desperately trying to pry her hand off the mouse to get your fix again. Seriously, PopCap doesn’t mess around. When you load up the game, the first thing you’ll notice is Plants vs Zombies’ charming style. Graphics-wise, Plants vs Zombies features gorgeous, hand-drawn visuals that perfectly fit the mood of the game. Each plant has a distinct look that fits its personality (more on that later) and each different breed of zombie looks suitably humorous. There’s not a lot to represent, considering that Plants vs. Zombies is a tower defense game, but everything is tastefully done. Plants vs Zombies shines in the gameplay department. As previously mentioned, your defense against the undead incursion amounts to your garden, so you’re in charge of planting the right plants to kill the zombies dead. At first, you’re limited to planting sunflowers and pea shooters. Sunflowers generate sun, which is this game’s currency, while pea shooters, well, shoot peas in the hopes of knocking off a zombie’s head. Every time you beat a level, you’ll be rewarded with something new, usually a new type of plant. There are 49 different types of plants and a limited amount of plant slots, allowing for a wide variety of defenses that incorporate each plant’s unique powers. Aside from adventure mode, where you’ll battle progressively more difficult zombie hordes and gain new plants and collect money to buy stuff, Plants vs Zombies also offers a variety of other modes to keep you entertained. You also have access to an Almanac that contains information on the different types of plants and zombies you have seen, each entry containing a laugh-out-loud description of the plant or zombie. The game’s gorgeous soundtrack makes everything that much more enjoyable, as you’ll love the tunes as much as you love everything else. Available for Windows, Mac, and iPhone (an excellent port that is missing only a few of the PC/Mac version’s features), Plants vs Zombies is a real treat to play. It’s the kind of game that you’ll want to play with your family and friends as much as you’ll want to play it into the wee hours of the night. Apple Unveils iAd, Competes with Google Posted: 09 Apr 2010 10:52 PM PDT Apple and Google have been anything but friendly recently, with Google providing substantial competition to Apple’s iPhone with its own Android-based smartphones. Now, Apple has decided to hit back where it will hurt, unveiling a new advertising platform for mobile devices that will challenge Google’s advertising dominance. ![]() Image: Apple iAd has a variety of groundbreaking features when compared to traditional advertising that may make Google nervous. Advertisers have the ability to make interactive ads that surpass the traditional form of advertising that simply tries to lure consumers to websites. The move could mean that Google’s hold on the mobile advertising market is weakened by a product that revolutionizes current advertising methods. For Google, this could become more of an opportunity than anything, as Google could eventually come back with a product that builds upon the successes (or failures) of Apple’s iAd. Still, iAd certainly poses a significant threat to Google in an area that has been left relatively unchallenged. Post from: EveryJoe Apple Unveils iAd, Competes with Google |

Posted: 09 Apr 2010 09:30 PM PDT The term “degenerative disc disease” is misleading, because the condition is not actually a disease in the traditional sense, but rather a condition that happens naturally was we age. Spinal discs are soft bundles of tissues that separate the vertebrae in the spinal column, acting as shock absorbers and allowing for mobility. As we age, these discs naturally deteriorate. ![]() Image: istockphoto Most often, the most degenerated spinal discs are found in the lower back, because most of the weight is supported by these discs. As these discs deteriorate, several conditions may result, including osteoarthritis, herniated discs, and spinal stenosis. All of these conditions cause varying levels of chronic pain. Spinal discs contain a gel-like fluid in the center, and when the discs degenerate, the fluid tends to seep out into the spinal region. This is most often referred to as a herniated disc, and it can pinch nerves and cause severe back pain. Fluid seeping into the spinal region also narrows the spinal cavity, causing spinal stenosis and an increase of pain in the back, buttocks, and legs. Heavy physical work, stress, smoking, and other bad habits can lead to an increased risk of developing degenerative disc disease. The symptoms include back and neck pain, but not every case of the condition results in pain. Rather, the symptoms can go completely unnoticed or they can strike later on, once the discs have worsened even more. Extreme deterioration of the spinal discs can lead to complete loss of mobility and crippling pain, but reducing the amount of stress on the back and exercising more are great ways to reduce this risk. Check out this video to learn how Dr. James Milham and Milham Family Chiropractic can successfully treat degenerative disc disease with non-surgical spinal decompression therapy. Posted: 09 Apr 2010 09:26 PM PDT A lot of people stress out about what they are going to say during a job interview. Will you know the answers to their questions? Will nerves get the best of you? Will you have chemistry with the interviewer? However, a secret among employers is that they tend to have a good idea whether or not you are suitable for their job before you even begin talking about specifics. Half the battle, if not more, takes place in the first few moments of the interview. ![]() Image: Zuma Press First of all, appearance is extremely important. Even if the job you are interviewing for is in a casual environment, always dress up for the interview. It's safer to be too dressy rather than too casual. Make sure your clothes are clean, ironed and tailored. Also be sure to be well groomed. Freshen your breath with breath spray or gum before arriving, but don’t chew gum during the interview. You want to cover all your bases in terms of your appearance when presenting yourself to a prospective employer for the first time. You should always arrive just a little bit early for an interview. You don't want to show up too early, however you definitely don't want to risk being late. Arriving just 10-15 minutes early tells your prospective employer that you are prompt and reliable. Your initial introduction to the interviewer is also important. Make eye contact and confidently greet him or her with your first and last name. Stand tall and extend your hand for a firm (yet not crushing) handshake. When seated during your interview, don’t slouch. Be sure to smile and keep eye contact throughout the interview. Never trash your previous employer, get too personal, or act desperate during a job interview. Play to your strengths and make it clear what you can do for the company, instead of concentrating on what you are going to get out of the job (money!). Mastering these simple steps could be the difference between landing your dream job and missing the boat. Post from: EveryJoe |
