Dealing With Lumbar Spinal Stenosis

Posted: 25 Apr 2010 08:42 PM PDT

Lumbar spinal stenosis is spinal stenosis in the lower back. Spinal stenosis is the overall degeneration of the spine's vertebrae, ligaments and discs. Lumbar spinal stenosis generally occurs during the second half of a person's life (symptoms usually begin after age 50).

The most common symptoms occur in the legs and around the lower back. Patients often feel pain while walking or running. Others can lose feeling in their lower back and experience tingling. Severe cases often leave patients completely incapacitated due to the extreme degeneration of the lower back.

The main reason people get lumbar spinal stenosis is simply old age. However, it can also occur due to osteoarthritis, degenerative disc disease, diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis and spondylolisthesis. Doctors can detect lumbar spinal stenosis with a CT scan (with myelogram) or an MRI scan.

Patients have many different options to help treat lumbar spinal stenosis. There are walkers and canes designed specifically for giving support to the lower back. Doctors also recommend physical therapy and exercise (using a stationary bike) to help keep the back active. Some sufferers can also take anti-inflammatory drugs and epidural injections — both help to alleviate pain and reduce swelling.

The most effective method for treating lumbar spinal stenosis is with surgery. Open laminectomy is the most effective (80% improvement rate) form of decompression surgery available. Other types of operations include microdiscectomy, interspinous process device surgery and facet joint replacement.

Here, we see Alexis as she arrived at the premiere of Five Star Day during the opening night of the Newport Beach Film Festival 2010. Smokin’!
