| Rich Get Richer: Chevron Wins $700 Million Posted: 30 Mar 2010 07:33 PM PDT Life isn’t always fair. While we hammer away at our job, Chevron is busy making billions and winning lawsuits for hundreds of millions. On Tuesday, Chevron was awarded $700 million by an international arbitration tribunal in a lawsuit against the government of Ecuador. According to the lawsuit, Ecuador failed to pay for oil over the last quarter century. While the courts in Ecuador previously ruled in the government’s favor, the international arbitrators obviously saw the case differently. Said Hewitt Pate of Chevron: “This ruling demonstrates that the government of Ecuador is not above the law. We have maintained for some time that Ecuador’s courts are failing to administer justice when it comes to Chevron and its affiliates, and an international tribunal has now agreed. We hope this ruling will help move Ecuador towards proper treatment of foreign investors and respect for the rule of law.” In this battle of big oil company and shady country, it’s difficult to pick a side. | Troublesome Steelers: Santonio Holmes Sued Posted: 30 Mar 2010 07:15 PM PDT It’s a troubling time for the Pittsburgh Steelers. With starting quarterback Ben Roethlisberger already being accused of sexual assault for the second time, the Steelers got some more bad news: wide receiver Santonio Holmes has been sued for a nightclub altercation. According to the lawsuit, Anshonae Mills claims that Holmes got enraged when she didn’t give him her seat and responded by throwing a glass. Mills says Holmes caused an abrasion on her forehead. Art Rooney II, the president of the Steelers, released the following statement: “We are disappointed to learn about the recent incident involving Santonio Holmes in Florida. While we are continuing to gather the facts, I cannot comment further until we have more information and have spoken to Santonio and his representatives.” This isn’t the first time Holmes has clashed with the law. He’s been charged with marijuana possession, disorderly conduct and domestic violence in the past in three separate incidences. | Steve Lavin Hired by St. John’s Posted: 30 Mar 2010 07:00 PM PDT St. John’s is looking to restore their past glory. Steve Lavin is looking to restore his coaching reputation. As it turns out, the two sides thought they’d make a good couple. On Tuesday, St. John’s hired Lavin to be the school’s new basketball coach. Lavin spent seven years as the head coach at UCLA. He had a record of 145-78. During his run, UCLA reached the Sweet 16 a total of five times, however Lavin was criticized for never taking the school to a championship. As for St. John’s, they’d gladly settle for a tournament appearance. They haven’t made the field of 64 since 2002. After firing Norm Roberts, St. John’s made it no secret that they were going to hire a big name coach. Since getting fired by UCLA in 2003, Lavin has spent his time as a broadcaster for ESPN. Lavin says that time at ESPN will help him at St. John’s. “The last seven years as a broadcaster allowed me to travel the country as a barnstormer with my partner, observing and studying different styles, different coaches, aspects of game preparation, the game itself sitting courtside, breaking down tape, the scouting reports,” said Lavin. | New iPhone for Verizon, Sprint Posted: 30 Mar 2010 12:42 PM PDT According to WSJ.com, Apple plans to produce a new generation of the iPhone that would allow for phone carriers other than AT&T. It would work on CDMA – a type of wireless network that is used by Verizon Wireless, Sprint Nextel and other providers. AT&T and most other major carriers use GSM not CDMA.  Image: Apple If Apple releases an iPhone with CDMA, it would appear their exclusive relationship with AT&T would be over. Details are sketchy at this point — Apple and Verizon decline comment, and an AT&T spokesman told WSJ,”There has been lots of incorrect speculation on CDMA iPhones for a long time. | Nissan Leaf to Cost $25K After Tax Credit Posted: 30 Mar 2010 12:26 PM PDT According to Nissan, their new Leaf electric car will start with a base sticker price of $32,780 in the United States. When you consider the $7,500 federal tax credit, the Leaf’s price of $25,280 is very reasonable. State and local credits may also be available.  Image: Nissan The automaker announced that they will begin taking orders for the Leaf on April 20 with a refundable $99 deposit, and the car will go on sale in December — one month after the Chevrolet Volt. The Volt is expected to cost about $40,000 — or $32,500 after the tax credit. The Leaf and the Volt are a bit different in terms of electricity and range. The Leaf is all-electric with a driving range of about 100 miles, while the Volt has a range of just 40 miles — but also has a gasoline engine that can generate enough electric to go 300 miles. Nissan expects many people to want to lease the car — so they will offer a lease with a down payment of $1,999 and payments of $349 per month. | Erykah Badu Window Seat Video Uncut Posted: 30 Mar 2010 10:01 AM PDT Controversy surrounds Erykah Badu’s new video “Window Seat”. In the video, Badu strips naked as she walks the street in Dallas and then falls shot near where President Kennedy was assassinated. The video was shot “guerrilla style” with no crew in one take on March 17 and was released this past Saturday. The City of Dallas is pissed off that she made the video without a permit. Others are pissed off that there were children around when the video was being filmed. Apparently the meaning of the video is that she is shedding her skin to reveal her true self, but that society tries to destroy anyone who breaks cultural bounds put forth for them. A big tattoo that reads, “Evolving” can be seen across her upper back in the video, but it’s her bootie that is getting some love from fans. “Window Seat” is the latest single from her New Amerykah Part Two: Return of the Ankh album. “We only had 1 shot to get it right,” she wrote on Twitter on Sunday. “We didn’t plan the shot. Coodie (director Coodie Rock) and I just went raw dog. Too busy looking for cops and being petrified.” “I was petrified while shooting this video … but liberation began to set in. | Donovan McNabb Traded to Raiders? Posted: 29 Mar 2010 08:55 PM PDT A trade that would send Donovan McNabb to the Oakland Raiders is apparently heating up. In the deal, the Raiders would send a second round pick to the Philadelphia Eagles to acquire the star quarterback. While the trade isn’t complete, sources indicate that it is likely to go down prior to the 2010 NFL Draft. This trade would make sense for both teams. The Raiders don’t really have a quarterback at this point. JaMarcus Russell has proven to be a bust on the NFL level and the backups aren’t much better. Trading for McNabb would give the Raiders a chance to surprise the league next season. His veteran leadership — not to mention his skill level — would be invaluable to Oakland. For the Eagles, they are looking to get younger and they are loaded at quarterback. Kevin Kolb appears to be a star in the making. Philadelphia could speed along his progression by shipping off McNabb and handing the keys to the car to Kolb. The Eagles also Michael Vick under contract as well. Raiders owner Al Davis loves veterans, loves to make a splash and really wants to win now. That recipe makes a trade for McNabb very probable. Since releasing their first EP in 2009, they have already opened for Neil Young, booked multiple TV gigs across Europe and are being dubbed as “must-see” by many critics. | Settle Squabbles With Instant Jury Posted: 29 Mar 2010 11:26 AM PDT Arguing with your roommate? Squabbling over fantasy football? Disagreeing with your spouse? Image: sxc.hu In addition to settling disputes, you can also sit on a jury or be a judge. Instant Jury offers these nine tips on how to win an argument. Pick your battles. This is the most important point of all. You certainly don't want to argue with a 6 foot 5 inch bouncer when he insists that you had too much to drink. That's probably an argument you're not going to win. Pick the battles that you have a reasonable chance of winning. What's in it for me? Sometimes just knowing you're right is justice enough but sometimes it pays to kick and scream to score those two first class tickets to Tahiti. The bigger the prize, the better your argument must be. Always know what you stand to win…and lose! Stack the jury. You need to know who's going to render the verdict before you start arguing. If you are trying to make a case for watching Monday Night Football to a group of women holding a Sex and the City DVD, you probably won't get many votes. Make sure you're on a level playing field. Just the facts ma'am. If you don't know the key points of your argument as well as your opponent's, you will have a difficult time creating a sound case. Positioning your strong points against the holes of the oppositions' will make for stronger case in your favor. Find some red hands. Having irrefutable evidence helps make any case stronger. You can't just cite your cousin Joey as saying "he thought so too!" Cousin Joey has no credibility but a photo of the crime or a paper trail will. Check your emotions. As much as you would like to reach across the table and rip out the opposition's endocrine system with your bare hands, showing this type of emotion could hurt your case. Presenting your argument with a sense of calm shows maturity and garners respect and credibility. Wait 'til after the case is over to go curse like a sailor. Don't be a bully. Maybe your opponent has some skeletons in their closet that have no bearing on the argument at hand. Don't reveal them. Doing so looks petty and will only make you lose favor in the eyes of the jury. If you have your facts straight, they will be ammo enough. Win with pride. Saying "I told you so" can feel soooo good. But biting your tongue and not saying anything at all will help you in the long run. No one likes a know-it-all. Don't be one. Your opponent will know they're wrong and your silence will be salt in the wound. Lose with dignity. You can't win 'em all and you won't. Don't be discouraged. | Who Will Win the NCAA Basketball Championship? Posted: 29 Mar 2010 10:54 AM PDT The Final Four is set — Michigan St, Butler, West Virginia and Duke all survived to make it to the Big Dance. Michigan St will face off against Butler in a semifinal matchup of two No.5 seeds. The other side of the bracket pits West Virginia and against Duke — the only No.1 seed to make it to the Final Four. The semifinal games take place on Saturday, April 3 and the National Championship game on Monday, April 5 in Indianapolis. | Duke and Michigan St. Round Out Final Four Posted: 28 Mar 2010 08:55 PM PDT In yet another classic finish, Michigan State defeated Tennessee to reach the Final. With the game tied at 69, Raymar Morgan nailed a free throw to give Michigan State a one-point lead with less than two seconds remaining to ice the contest. Michigan State was led by Durrell Summers’ 21 points. Morgan chipped in 13 points, ten rebounds and two blocked shot. Draymond Green came off the bench to score 13 points and was the only other Spartans player in double-figures.  Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo celebrates the win (Image: Zuma Press) Wayne Chism led the way for Tennessee with 13 points, while J.P. Prince, Brian Williams and Scotty Hopson all had at least ten points. The other team to reach the Final Four with a win on Sunday was Duke. Going against an athletic Baylor squad, Duke battled back in the second half and won by a final score of 78-71. Nolan Smith and Jon Scheyer were the two stars for Duke — combining for 49 points, eight rebounds, five assists and nine three-pointers. Baylor’s Ekpe Udoh gave all he could give, finishing with 18 points, ten rebounds, six assists and five blocked shots. LaceDarius Dunn was the leading scorer for Baylor with 22 points. The Final Four will begin on April 3rd in Indianapolis. Hometown team Butler will go up against Michigan State. In the other side of the bracket, Duke plays West Virginia. | Magical Night: J.J. Redick Explodes Posted: 28 Mar 2010 08:55 PM PDT Sunday was a big day for Duke. During the day, Duke beat Baylor to reach the Final Four. Later, former Duke sharpshooter J.J. Redick had the best game of his NBA career. Thanks for Redick’s dominance, the Orlando Magic were able to down the Denver Nuggets 103-97. Redick came into the game averaging 9.2 points, 1.8 rebounds and 1.7 assists. Against the Nuggets on Sunday, Redick had 23 points, eight assists and seven rebounds — both of his totals for rebounds and assists were career-highs. After Vince Carter hurt his toe and left the game less than two minutes in, Redick took over and never looked back. Dwight Howard had 18 points, 11 rebounds, five assists and two blocks but this night belonged to Redick. With the win, the Magic have solidified their spot at the second seed in the Eastern Conference behind the Cleveland Cavaliers. Denver, on the other hand, fell from the second seed in the Western Conference after the loss. The Nuggets are now tied with the Utah Jazz for the third seed with a 48-26 record.
