Have You Had Your Annual Physical?

Posted: 11 Mar 2010 11:19 AM PST

Many men don’t go to the doctor until they are sick…and sometimes not even then. However one of the keys to long-term health is regular checkups and preventive care. When was the last time that you went to a doctor? Do you have an annual physicals?

A health checkup will only take about 45 minutes and include a physical exam and discussion with your health care provider. Men should have their blood pressure checked, as well as a blood test to check cholesterol levels. Every three years beginning at the age 30, men should have a standard cancer check (thyroid, mouth, skin, testicles, lymph node). Beginning at age 50, men should have a colonoscopy every 10 years.

Antonio Bryant Signs with the Bengals

Posted: 10 Mar 2010 08:55 PM PST

Antonio Bryant was very good in 2008. Last year, he struggled. However, his good season in 2008 was apparently good enough to convince the Cincinnati Bengals that he’s for real. On Wednesday, the Bengals signed Bryant to a four-year deal worth $28 million. Bryant could earn an additional million dollars with incentives.

In 2008 while with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Bryant had 83 catches for 1,248 yards and seven touchdowns. Last season, he had 39 catches for 600 yards and four touchdowns. The emotional 29-year-old was out of football in 2007.

The Bengals needed another wide receiver to put next to Chad Ochocinco after they released Laveranues Coles and the death of Chris Henry. While there were rumors that the Bengals were considering Terrell Owens, the team apparently decided T.O. wasn’t worth the risk.

Earlier in the offseason, Cincinnati signed Matt Jones — who was out of football last season due to off-field problems that included a drug-related arrest. With Ochocinco, Bryant and Jones, the Bengals suddenly have a lot of weapons for quarterback Carson Palmer.

Mavs Rally to Win 13th Straight

Posted: 10 Mar 2010 08:55 PM PST

The Dallas Mavericks are the hottest team in the NBA. The New Jersey Nets? They are the worst team in the league. Early on during Wednesday night’s contest, it appeared as the Nets were going to pull an epic upset. However, the Mavs were able to rally and beat the Nets by a final score of 96-87. The win was the Dallas’ 13th in a row.

The Nets led by as many as 18 points in the first half but Jason Kidd had the Mavs fighting back. Kidd finished the game with 20 points, nine assists, four rebounds and four steals. The newly acquired Caron Butler had 18 points, while Brendan Haywood had 11 points, ten rebounds and two blocks.

Leading the way early on for the Nets was Devin Harris. The former Mav had 21 points, seven assists and three steals. Rookie Terrence Williams had 18 points, 13 rebounds and three assists for New Jersey.

The Nets are now 7-57 on the season — easily the worst record in the NBA. The Mavs, on the other hand, are 45-21 and sit in second place in the Western Conference.

5 Things We Can Learn From Pro Athletes

Posted: 10 Mar 2010 08:52 PM PST

By Guest Blogger Andrew Salmon

Professional athletes are in peak physical condition and can serve as inspirations to us all. Here are five things we can learn from pro athletes about staying fit.

1. Every Muscle Is Important

Pro athletes have well-muscles, proportioned physiques. This is not so they can land that underwear ad. It's because the human musculature is a system something akin to a series of pulleys. Every muscle group has to be fit and developed. The same applies to us. When you exercise, make it a full body workout.

2. The Importance of Diet

Eating right is crucial to an athlete's performance. There's a lesson in that. But the thing to look out for here is the danger of overeating. Professional athletes eat like horses. They have to since they expend enormous amounts of energy staying on top of their game. But check out the diet ads for men on TV and in magazines. Almost always they feature one or more pro athletes plugging a diet/meal plan because they needed to lose weight. The thing is, after they retired, they no longer needed to gobble down every scrap of food in sight. But over the course of their careers they became accustomed to doing so and then it's a one-way train to Bloat City. So the lesson here is to make sure you're eating the amount of calories you need for the amount of activity you have in your life.

3. Stretching

Tune into any pregame show for your favorite sport and watch the report from the field. Behind the announcer you'll see players twisting themselves into pretzels and doing it slowly, carefully, with no bouncing. A lot of weekend athletes like to hit the field running. Problem is they usually leave the field limping. Pulled or strained muscles are not only painful but can take weeks to heal, leaving you on the sidelines when you were trying to get into shape. Pro athletes are in better shape than most of us will ever be, and yet they stretch before they play.

4. No Such Thing As Too Much Energy

Being a pro athlete must be exhausting! Not only do they have train all year long before and after grueling seasons where they give it all they've got, but modern day athletes have so many demands put on their time via endorsements, interviews, public appearances and so on, it's a wonder they don't drop where they stand. Of course their state of physical fitness gives them the energy they need to be on the go 24/7/365. As exercise increases our energy levels and gives us the tools to shoulder the burdens in our lives, I think we can learn a lesson from the professionals.

5. Make Exercise the Journey, Not The Destination

Now athletes don't eat carefully outlined diets, stretch and exercise endlessly as a goal in itself. Rather they work on their fitness level so that they can play the sport they love. This is their reward for all that hard work and sacrifice. Their sport of choice is fun! And so should your fitness routine.

Foreclosure Rate Slows to Four-Year Low

Posted: 10 Mar 2010 08:46 PM PST

As another hint that the economy is getting back on its feet, new reports from RealtyTrac show that the amount of foreclosure filings in the United States rose at the slowest pace in four years in February. This revelation suggests that government efforts to slow bank seizures of property have begun to have a marked impact on the housing market.

Foreclosure

February saw 308,524 households receive notices of default, auction, or seizure last month, a figure that amounts to a 6 percent increase in filings from a year earlier. This is the smallest increase since RealityTrac, the California-based default data seller, has recorded since it began tracking this figure in January 2006.

Still, foreclosure rates rose for the 50th straight month, topping 300,000 foreclosures for the last twelve months. According to RealityTrac's CEO, James J. Saccacio, the findings show that the government's efforts to keep people in their homes have capped monthly foreclosure activity, but also that many people across the country are still suffering and at risk of foreclosure.
