How to Get in Shape for Beginners Posted: 01 Mar 2010 08:31 PM PST With a wealth of information available online for getting into shape, it can be easy to overload on what to do for fitness. Add in the expert opinions that completely contradict one another and a beginner to exercising can quickly get lost. The best method for exercising is the KISS method (acronym for Keep It Simple Stupid), especially for newcomers. With KISS in mind, stick to the most basic of fitness advice and exercises to build a foundation for success that you can build upon and get more creative with as you progress. I recommend beginners start by picking 4 days a week to exercise for 45 minutes. Ideally, these will take place at the same time of day, but if not, you take your workouts where you can get them. During your 45 minutes, aim for cardio between 15-20 minutes and resistance training and stretching for the rest of your time. For cardio exercises, try rotating the treadmill/running and stairstepper or rotex/biking. For strength training, do your best to work as many different muscles as you can. An easy way to divide exercises is by concentrating on legs and abs one day and everything else on your second day. Try finishing at least 6 exercises after you finish your cardio. When you are first starting, keep your reps to 10-12 and your sets between 2-3. You don’t want to challenge yourself to the point where you’re straining. Instead, just make sure you put a solid effort into your lifts. Outside of your exercise routines, make sure to get a balanced diet including the core food groups and at least 7 hours of sleep a night. Be cognizant that fast food or other unhealthy food will impede your progress. With these adjustments working in your life, you should see some results in just 2 to 3 weeks. Kevin Harvick Wins Sam’s Town 300 Posted: 01 Mar 2010 03:48 PM PST Kevin Harvick stayed strong through the first part of the Sam’s Town 300 and when his moment came he surged forward to grab the win at the line from a frustrated Denny Hamlin. Kevin had to deal with several problems on the day that included pit stops that dragged on like church and a rainbow of different tire strategies that finally hit the spot. Harvick stayed as close as he could for 275 laps in Saturday’s race and with about 25 laps remaining at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, he pulled in front of Denny Hamlin and slowly pulled away to win by a 1.361 second margin. This is a day that has been a little while coming for Harvick during his current period on the track, but this win puts him back in the books with his 35th career Nationwide Series win, which puts him second on the all time win list for the Nationwide Series. The season has just started though and if Harvick gets his car running fast he could get on a role that will see him lead the pack as we travel further into the 2010 Nationwide Series season. He still has a lot of work to do, but so far things are looking up for a racer most thought would challenge for the Nationwide Series championship in 2010. Carl Edwards had a pretty good day on Saturday and managed to finish third in the Sam’s Town 300. He looked pretty fast out on the track and just lacked the speed to keep up with the leaders as they came to the final laps. Expect the team to get the car running a little better in the next race and Carl to pick up the pace of his racing. There are many who expect Carl to be one of the challengers for the Nationwide Series title in 2010. They could be right, but he has a lot of work to do if he’s going to challenge the faster cars on the track. Brad Keselowskifinished fourth in the Sam’s Town 300, just ahead of Brian Vickers in fifth, Trevor Bayne in sixth, Justin Allgaier in seventh, Paul Menard in eighth, Greg Biffle in ninth and the top ten was rounded out by Steve Wallace. “Image: Zuma Press” Post from: EveryJoe Kevin Harvick Wins Sam’s Town 300 |

Posted: 01 Mar 2010 07:00 AM PST Former American Idol contestant, Danny Gokey, may not have won the competition, but he certainly is making music regardless. His debut album is called My Best Days and is being released Originally, the song "It's Only" was supposed to be the first released track, however, they decided to release "My Best Days Are Ahead of Me." In 2008, his wife passed away after complications arose while undergoing heart surgery. This was four weeks before Gokey auditioned for American Idol. It's a pretty symbolic song considering all that he's gone through. It's great to see him making music! Take a look at his video for "My Best Days Are Ahead of Me":

The New Top 5 College Basketball Teams Posted: 01 Mar 2010 06:33 AM PST There was plenty of action in college basketball this weekend. Kansas fell to Oklahoma State, a team that isn’t even ranked in the top 20. And both Kentucky and Purdue (number two and three respectively) were upset as well. Kentucky lost to Tennessee. And Purdue lost to Michigan St. Only Duke and Syracuse continued on with their winning streaks. So, what does all of this mean exactly? Well … as far as rankings go, there should be a new number one team in college basketball. And that team should be Syracuse.
![]() Even Syracuse fans know that their team should be ranked number one. The Orange Men are rolling. They handled Villanova (a team that many analysts believed could win the whole NCAA Tournament this year) with impressive ease, winning 95 -77 in front of over 34,000 screaming ‘Cuse fans. With a 26 -2 overall record, and an incredibly effective two-three zone defensive scheme, Syracuse should be the new number one team in the country. In fact, I’m picking them to go all of the way in the NCAA Tournament. We’ll know for sure once the new rankings are announced today. But in the meantime, here is my list of the new top five teams in college basketball: 1. Syracuse Image: Zuma Press Post from: EveryJoe The New Top 5 College Basketball Teams |
Male Hearing Loss and Analgesics Posted: 01 Mar 2010 04:31 AM PST Men who regularly take aspirin, acetaminophen, and/or ibuprofen, may be at higher risk of developing hearing loss than men who don’t use the analgesics (pain killers) regularly, say researchers.
What they found was that men under the age of 60 years who took aspirin on a regular basis had a 33% higher chance of losing some hearing than men who did not take aspirin regularly. This wasn’t too surprising to the researchers because there was already information in the medical literature about some of the toxic effects of aspirin. However, non-steroidal anti-inflammatories, such as ibuprofen and acetaminophen didn’t fare much better. Men under the age of 50, who took NSAIDs regularly, had a 61% higher chance of losing hearing, while those who were between 50 and 59 years old had a 32% higher chance. And, while for men over 60 years, there was no additional risk for men who took aspirin, there was a 16% chance for men in that age group who took NSAIDs. ~~~ Image: PhotoXpress.com Post from: EveryJoe Male Hearing Loss and Analgesics |
Overcoming Mental Barriers to Fitness Posted: 01 Mar 2010 02:11 AM PST Have you ever stopped yourself from doing something and found out there was no good justification for doing so? Everyday millions of people keep themselves from getting in shape because of hang ups they created. The hang ups I refer to include things like avoiding the treadmill because too many people might see you run or staying away from the gym altogether because the “in-shape” people will make fun of you. It could be an idea like exercising will be so super hard, you need to try to avoid it at all costs. Or it could be purposely arranging your schedule so you have the excuse of being too busy to workout. Whatever the scenario, many people carry mental barriers when it comes to fitness and they end up proving very self destructive. Let go of your fears and misconceptions holding you back. Think you don’t have any? You may be harboring some subconscious mental barriers and not even know it. Give yourself a candid self assessment and ask yourself what exercises you avoid and why? Also question yourself on the real reasons you skip the gym. Clear your mind of past conditioning and pre-conceived notions. You can’t afford to let any mental barriers stop you from achieving a happy and healthy workout. Post from: EveryJoe Overcoming Mental Barriers to Fitness |
