On DVD: “Where the Wild Things Are” Posted: 03 Mar 2010 06:45 PM PST Where the Wild Things Are may be just what you need if you're looking to watch a movie suitable for the family. The film is based on the 1963 children's book by Maurice Sendak, which you may remember from your childhood, or from having introduced to your own kids. The book is about a boy named Max who fools around his home in a wolf costume. His mother is annoyed by his mischievous behavior and decides to send him to bed without dinner. Emerging from his imagination, Max enters a mysterious lands where he comes across what is known as The Wild Things, which are monsters. While there he makes a few realizations about his home life. It could be an interesting film to watch the whole family. It's available now on Blu-ray and DVD. Image: Amazon.com

Video Games Make Kids Sociopaths Posted: 03 Mar 2010 05:59 PM PST A recent Iowa University study finds violent video games make players more aggressive and less caring. This was a “meta-analysis” meaning the author [Craig Anderson] took 130 research reports and then studied those reports and came up with the conclusion that violent video games aren’t good for kids. Normally I would poo-poo something like this since “violent” video games seem to be the current collective Whipping Boy of American Media but the sample size of this meta-analysis is big -130k. A big sample generally means better science. While the study doesn’t list at what age they consider a person a “youth” it seems like common sense that constant exposure to violence would desensitize some to said violence. If all you see is violence [even if that violence is virtual] then the next time you see violence, you won’t be as shocked. But while it might seem like a “Duh” thing to say “Violent video games are bad for kids” there isn’t a lot of evidence as to just how harmful the games are with regards to longterm effects.
What does this mean to your average Joe who has a kid who really likes playing COD4? It comes down to Parenting 101 – know what your kid is doing and how it’s affecting him. Also, you have to know your kid. Parents need to know what their kids are playing and what their kids can handle but the study pretty much confirms what a lot of people have been saying for a while. You know I’m not saying some kids shouldn’t be playing what some people would consider “violent” video games. Everyone is different and what’s violent to some isn’t violent to another. But, I am saying the next time I hear a pre-pubescent kid screeching curse words at me while I’m playing COD4 online, I’ll think of this study. Rossi and Lorenzo Visit Indonesia Posted: 03 Mar 2010 05:52 PM PST The boys of the Yamaha MotoGP Premier Class team were in Indonesia for a three day period of press conferences, meetings with the public and visiting the sites of Indonesia that were of interest to them. Jorge Lorenzo and Valentino Rossi spent the three days having fun, while meeting people and taking a look at some of the Yamaha factories and other infrastructure in Indonesia. Indonesia is actually one of Yamaha’s better and more important markets and this kind of publicity outing is just the thing to improve relations and sales. The boys spent the time in meetings with Yamaha officials when they weren’t talking to fans and looking at the local sites of interest. This kind of things is just what the boys need after the tension of their last testing session on their bikes, like they feel tension when their on their bikes. They should take some time to relax and take their mind off of the bikes and the up coming 2010 MotoGP Premier Class season. This kind of thing is going to feel like an old and comfortable hat to a seven time MotoGP Premier Class Champion like Valentino Rossi, Jorge on the other hand will probably be a little more on edge at these kind of affairs as compared to Rossi. This of course could be wrong, but something tells me that not much will phase Rossi. Any man that can get on board a two-wheeled machine and take it around a track at breakneck speed year after year isn’t going to be pressured by much. Actually, the first time I saw Valentino Rossi in person I found it hard that such a young looking man could be as tough physically and mentally as he obviously is. His face and smile made me think of my little silly little nephew, rather than a man many consider the best sportbike rider in MotoGP history. He seemed to have an inherent calmness about him that I have found in people with an intense confidence and intelligence that allows them to understand the world. He certainly held himself with confidence but I felt no feeling of superiority in the way he held himself, talked or acted. This to me is amazing because having met other celebrities and the way people treat them as gods at times it must be hard to stay human and realistic and he seems to have accomplished this with style and grace as well. CÎROC: I Thought Only Wine Came From Grapes Posted: 03 Mar 2010 05:33 PM PST CÎROC vodka is made from grapes. Who knew you could make vodka from grapes?! Well, obviously the people who make CÎROC knew you can make vodka from grapes but I didn’t and I was all shocked and stuff. Can you tell? The extremely nice PR lady for CÎROC sent me a bottle of the original CÎROC along with the new Red Berry and Coconut flavors. I’m telling you right now, if you’re a big fan of berry Kool-Aid then you’re going to LOVE Red Berry CÎROC and I mean that in the best way possible. Really. The stuff smelled so good I wanted to drink it straight…just chug that little bottle like I was back in college. But, I didn’t. I mixed it with Sprite and then I chugged it. I’m cultured now and stuff. The Coconut CÎROC reminds me of Cancun and I’m sure that has something to do with the fact that most beach products smell like coconut…though you probably shouldn’t drink those. Drink the Coconut CÎROC. CÎROC has succeeded in taking two flavors that could have very easily turned out cheap tasting and kitschy and have instead come up with something pretty fantastic. If you haven’t tried them yet, you should. You won’t be disappointed. Image/Ciroc Post from: EveryJoe CÎROC: I Thought Only Wine Came From Grapes |
Posted: 03 Mar 2010 05:30 PM PST The 2009 Formula One season is over and it only made us want to see what would happen in 2010. 2009 Formula One World Champion Jenson Button will be ready to go and probably a little nervous considering expectations now that he has won it all. Nobody will be satisfied unless Jenson wins again and with the roster of talented drivers, former Formula One World Champions, and inspiring champions he has to contend with, the battle is going to be an intense one. Jenson is certainly in the drivers seat, but his ability to win is going to be tied to a lot of factors he has no control over. The first would be the work on the car that needs to be done to get it ready to win. He certainly will have a drivers input on the changes the engineers make to the car, but the final result is out of his hands. He also has to deal with Lady Luck and the possibility that the little things won’t go his way, which will make it even more difficult to repeat as Formula One World Champion. The toughest part will certainly be the pressure, because there’s only one thing tougher than winning it all once and that would be doing it again and again. This is why the return of Micheal Schumacher to the Formula One mix is so interesting to Formula One fanatics. They wonder whether Micheal is really talented enough to return to the cockpit after sitting on the sidelines for a few years and return to the form that won him consecutive Formula One World Championships. Micheal has looked okay behind the wheel and on the track, so far, but one has to wonder if he still has what it takes to win. It’s hard for me to believe that an intelligent racer like Schumacher hasn’t tested himself in his own way and wouldn’t take the chance of returning if he thoughts he was going to embarress himself. This is why I think that Micheal will have a slow start to the season, but will improve as the season progresses and by the end he could be in the winner circle once or twice. Lewis Hamilton on the other hand is the other former Formula One World Champion with something to prove to himself, his team and the world at large. He won his championship in away that made me think he had a chance of repeating and his inability to rise to the top last year was a real disappointment for all who love to watch him race. Lewis is going to have to get a good start to the season to have a chance, I feel, because his competition is going to get stronger with each race. The best chance he has in my opinion is to come out and take control in the first race and try to keep everybody behind him. He’s a better front runner, than a racer who is one of the better passers, so jumping out to the front and trying to stay there is probably his best strategy. “Image: Zuma Press” Post from: EveryJoe |
Posted: 03 Mar 2010 08:00 AM PST If you or your family were looking forward to seeing Tim Burton's film Alice in Wonderland then you might be interested in the video game, based on the film. In the game, players are taken to Underland. Yes, Underland. Of course you wouldn't be able to play the game without running in to Alice's friends the Mad Hatter and the Cheshire Cat. They each help Alice along her quest with their unique individual abilities. The Cheshire Cat has the ability to make things appear and disappear. The Mad Hatter takes advantage of optical illusions to help Alice open up pathways in Underland, which she may not have noticed. The game is available on the Nintendo Wii and DS. Looks like it could be interesting! Likely, a good game for the whole family. Image: Alice in Wonderland Post from: EveryJoe |
Ochocinco on Dancing With the Stars Posted: 03 Mar 2010 07:33 AM PST I’m glad to see that Chad Ochocinco will be on the upcoming Dancing With the Stars. Why? Because I actually miss his on-field antics. He was starting to grow on me. Besides that, Dancing With the Stars is a far better venue to have his crazy antics than an actual football field. This way he’ll get to dance, wear pretty outfits, and show off. In fact, he might just win. Ochocinco joins ESPN sportscaster Erin Andrews and figure skater Evan Lysacek as contestants this year. As far as Ochocinco’s teammates, Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer said he was “Fired up” and “Excited to watch Chad on the show.” You and me both, Palmer. You and me both. Mayweather, Mosley Press Tour Gets Physical Posted: 03 Mar 2010 04:27 AM PST Floyd Mayweather and Shane Mosley got into a bit of a tussle yesterday at the start of a New York City press conference promoting their upcoming May 1 fight on HBO PPV. This was the first stop on a three-city media tour. Rounds two and three are in Washington DC and Los Angeles, respectively. I’m sure the shoving match was staged, but it does add to the hype. Michael Vick: I Like Carolina’s Uniforms Posted: 03 Mar 2010 04:17 AM PST There are many reasons a player may want to go to a particular team. It’s location, the type of fan base it has, the coaching staff, the players….. but the uniforms? Michael Vick likes those Carolina uniforms! Vick still has another year on his contract, but he’s already looking ahead to where he could end up next and wasn’t afraid to share his thoughts. USA Today reports that Vick would pick Carolina because, “It’s close to home. I like the uniforms. You get to play against Atlanta twice a year.” Image: Zuma Press Post from: EveryJoe Michael Vick: I Like Carolina’s Uniforms |
