Man-sized Meals: Master of the Universe Pizza

Posted: 17 Mar 2010 08:59 PM PDT

Sure, you can always pick up the phone and call Domino’s, but there’s nothing better than homemade pizza. You can choose the exact toppings that you want and just the right amount of sauce. This hearty recipe for stuffed crust Master of the Universe Pizza is from The Kitchens of The Food Channel. You can adjust the toppings to your own personal favorites.

Master of the Universe Pizza

Prep Time: 20 minutes
Cook Time: 12-15 minutes
Serves: 4

Master of the Universe Pizza – hearty stuffed crust pizza layered with a four-meat blend of sausage, bacon, Canadian bacon and pepperoni with black olives and bell peppers – all smothered in gooey melted mozzarella cheese served with a side of red sauce for dipping.

Foodie Byte: Pizza style Canadian bacon was used in this recipe; if using larger traditional sliced Canadian bacon, slice rounds in quarters. For added spice – switch out traditional sausage topping with Italian hot sausage crumbles and serve topped with crushed red pepper flakes – great paired with a side of ranch dressing for dipping to cool things down.

Ingredients:

  • 16 ounce prepared pizza dough
  • Corn meal for dusting
  • 8 sticks string cheese
  • 2 cups pizza sauce, divided
  • 4 cups shredded mozzarella cheese, divided
  • 4 ounces Canadian style bacon
  • ½ cup bell pepper, sliced into strips
  • 2 cups diced bacon, cooked
  • 1 cup crumbled cooked sausage
  • 4 ounces sliced pepperoni
  • ¼ cup black olive slices, drained
  • 1 tablespoon grated Parmesan cheese

Preparation:

  1. Heat oven to 475 degrees F.
  2. Roll out pizza dough into a 14-inch circle. Place on 12-inch oiled pizza pan dusted with cornmeal (drape crust evenly over outer edges of pan).
  3. Position 1 stick string cheese along inside edges of dough, fold dough over cheese and press to seal. Repeat with remaining cheese sticks; forming a cheese stuffed crust around outer edge of pizza pan.
  4. Spread ½ cup pizza sauce evenly over center of pizza crust; top with 2 cups shredded cheese.
  5. Arrange Canadian bacon, bell pepper strips, bacon, sausage, pepperoni and black olives over top of pizza. Top with shredded cheese and bake for 12 to 15 minutes or until golden and bubbly. Remove from oven. Sprinkle Parmesan cheese evenly over top of pizza.

Is Tiger Woods Coming Back Too Soon?

Posted: 17 Mar 2010 08:55 PM PDT

In about three weeks, Tiger Woods will be back on the big stage once again. Fittingly, he’ll make his return at the Masters where he won his first major more than a decade ago. But is Tiger Woods returning to golf too soon?

Following a car accident near his home, Tiger’s personal life hit the fan. Tiger had to eventually admit to having numerous affairs and his wife let him — as did many of his sponsors.

To repair his image, Tiger needed to spend time working on his personal issues. He needed to show remorse and prove to the world that he’s a changed man. A return this fast may instead tell the world that he just wants to get back on the golf course ASAP.

Tiger says that he’ll continue to rehab and grow as a person. But that growth should be occurring behind closed doors — not in front of millions while ruthlessly competing.

We’ll see how it turns out but this quick return has the appearance of a PR nightmare in the making.

Actress Kate Mara has appeared in a number of TV shows and films. You might have first noticed her as the daughter of Heath Ledger’s character in Brokeback Mountain, or as Shari Rothenberg on FOX’s 24. She has also appeared in We are Marchall, Shooter, The Open Road and a number of other movies.

Football fans certainly know Kate, or at least her family. She is the great-granddaughter of Giants founder Tim Mara and the granddaughter of late Giants owner Wellington Mara on her father’s side, as well as the great-granddaughter of Steelers founder Art Rooney on her mother’s side. She has also sung the national anthem at several Giants and Steelers games.

Tim Tebow Shouldn’t Attend Draft

Posted: 17 Mar 2010 08:55 PM PDT

According to numerous sources, Tim Tebow has been invited by the league to attend the 2010 NFL Draft. Personally, I think it’d be a big mistake for Tebow to accept the invitation. While he may be the best college football player of all-time, his draft stock is too unpredictable for him to risk embarrassment.

There is some talk that Tebow could go in the first two rounds of the draft. A team could invest a high draft pick in him and then give him a few years to master the NFL game. That said, there’s probably a better chance that he’ll be drafted after the beginning of the third round.

As long as Tebow is on the board, that’s all the talking heads on television will be discussing. Between each pick, they will be talking about whether Tebow makes sense for the team on the clock. Then we’ll have to see shots of Tebow sitting with his family waiting … and waiting … and waiting.

Tebow doesn’t back down from adversity but for his sake and the sake of the viewing public, he needs to watch the draft from home. He’ll be selected at some point but the wait won’t seem quite as long from home opposed to in front of a national audience.

Must-See Sports Movies

Posted: 17 Mar 2010 08:55 PM PDT

Since the beginning of 2009, there have been a number of quality sports movies that have hit theaters. Which of those were must-see sports movies? Here’s a look at the best of the best.

Sugar
This is one of my favorite sports movies of all-time. “Sugar” is a flick about a baseball player from the Dominican Republic and his experience climbing the ladder in the sport he loves.

The Blind Side
“The Blind Side” was one of the surprise hits of 2009. Sandra Bullock ended up winning an Oscar for his performance in this movie about a homeless kid adopted by wealthy family who turns into a beast on the gridiron.

The Damned United
Even if you aren’t a fan of soccer, you’ll still probably like this flick. It’s about a soccer manager in England set nearly a half century ago. “The Damned United” features a number of quality European actors including Michael Sheen, Jim Broadbent and Colm Meaney.

Big Fan
Sports fans don’t understand how ridiculous they seem to the outside world. “Big Fan” tackles that issue in a hilarious way. Patton Oswalt plays a memorable role as a fan of the New York Giants of the NFL.

Rangers Manager Admits to Cocaine Use

Posted: 17 Mar 2010 08:55 PM PDT

Ron Washington, the manager of the Texas Rangers, has admitted that he used cocaine during the 2009 baseball season. Although he offered to resign at the time, the Rangers decided to keep him on as manager.

Said Washington: “I apologize for a huge mistake I made. I’m not here to make excuses, I’m not here for sympathy — that would be asking too much. I’m truly sorry for my careless, dangerous and, frankly, stupid behavior last year.”

After being selected for a random drug test, Washington informed both the league office and the Rangers that he was going to test positive for cocaine. The tests later came in and indeed showed that Washington had used cocaine.

Washington says that was the one and only time he used the drug. The manager says he used cocaine as a way to escape.

“I’ve learned a lot about myself personally,” said Washington, “and I recognize that this episode was an attempt to dodge personal anxieties and personal issues I needed to confront.”

Since his positive drug test, Washington has been continuously drug tested. All of the subsequent tests have come back negative. While Washington remains the manager of the Rangers, one would assume this news could lead to his firing if it becomes a distraction.

Nike Q3 Sales Up 7 Percent, Stocks Up

Posted: 17 Mar 2010 08:27 PM PDT

In a bout of good news for athletic apparel and footwear company Nike, reports reveal that third quarter sales and earnings are up. This news surprised analysts and sent Nike's shares to a new 52-week high, signaling better times for the athletic goods giant.

Nike

Image: Nike

Nike reported third quarter sales of $4.7 billion, marking a 7 percent increase from the $4.4 billion in sales that it reported last year. Earnings improved to $496 million, or $1.01 per share, compared to last year's $244 million, or 50 cents per share. Last year's figure, though, reflects a $241 million one-time charge.

Analysts' expectations were soundly beat, with analysts predicting earnings of 89 cents per share and $4.6 billion in sales. Shares went up 3.4 percent in after-hours trading to $73.14, exceeding Nike's previous 52-week high of $71.33 by a substantial amount. With Nike's future looking brighter, it remains to be seen how the rest of the economy recovers.
