Posted: 04 Mar 2010 07:47 PM PST

Tricia Helfer started life as a Canadian farm girl but after winning Ford Models’ Supermodel of the World Contest, Helfer spent 10 years as a fashion model. Since then, she has continued modeling and has also dabbled in acting, appearing in Battlestar Galactica and Burn Notice.

Her 2007 nude spread in Playboy brought a lot of attention to this sexy blonde and her perfect body. She’s living proof that some of the hottest chicks in the world might be living in the middle of nowhere.

Let Picasa Tell You Who’s In Your Photos

Posted: 04 Mar 2010 07:25 PM PST

A few months ago I discovered a feature in one of my favorite graphics applications. The application is Picasa and the new feature is their facial recognition functions.

picasa-face-recognition

The Picasa application isn’t really a photo editing tool in my opinion, although it’s got some tools that are nice for the entry-level and home user. What I believe Picasa excels at is organizing and managing your photos and other graphics.

Part of that organization has now become their facial recognition tool. Picasa will start to recognize faces in your photos and then prompt you to tell you who it is. You then tag those photos, similar to how you would in Facebook, and Picasa begins to learn to recognize that same person in other photos.

I was very impressed with how quickly and accurately Picasa was able to accomplish this task. It doesn’t take long to train it, but the more you tweak and adjust, it gets better and better and more accurate.

Now, the next time you need to find a photo with someone in particular, you can go right to it and find exactly what you need.

I wish I could adjust the sensitivity to recognizing the faces though. It will start picking up faces on clothing, billboards and other displays. Perhaps the most frustrating part is when it prompts you to identify all the people in a crowd. That becomes a real big waste of time.

Overall though, I’m very impressed and really enjoying seeing all my photos in a different way now. Organized by person is really interesting.

Baby Dies Due To Video Game Addiction

Posted: 04 Mar 2010 10:39 AM PST

A South Korea couple took care of their Second Life baby while their REAL baby starved to death.

According to reports, the couple would head off to an internet cafe while their three month old baby was left by herself. A three month old!

After the baby had died, the parents [if you can call them that] called emergency services and basically told cops the baby had died during the night.

Since the baby was so dehydrated [cops later discovered that baby was given one bottle a day], the cops didn’t buy that the baby “had just died” and when an autopsy was done on the baby, they found out the parents had starved the poor thing.

This all happened last September but is making news now since the murderers ran right after the baby’s funeral and cops just now caught them.

My usual go-to thing is humor or maybe satire but there’s nothing funny about this. It’s just sad and pathetic and criminal and I’m sure you can add a few of your own descriptors as well.

This baby died because of her parents’ video game addiction and while  addicts need help not jail time, if you kill someone – especially someone as helpless as your three month old daughter – you deserve to have the proverbial book thrown at you.

Pinky Spring Fever Cocktail

Posted: 04 Mar 2010 09:32 AM PST

Infused with the bright flavors of green tea and citrus, Spring Fever is sure to remind you that Spring is right around the corner.

There’s a bit of “cooking” involved with this recipe but don’t be afraid – it’s easy.

Spring Fever Cocktail

Ingredients:

  • 2 parts Pinky Vodka
  • 1 part TLM Green Tea Simple Syrup*
  • ¾ part fresh orange juice
  • ¾ part pineapple juice
  • 1 edible flower garnish

Directions:

Shake all ingredients with ice and strain into a chilled cocktail glass.  Garnish.

*TLM Green Tea Simple Syrup: Brew four ounces of green tea and pour into a saucepan.  Add eight ounces of white granulated sugar.  Heat and stir constantly, until boiling.  Reduce heat, set aside and refrigerate.

Think of the Spring Fever Cocktail as Spring in a glass.

23-Year-Old Rugby Player Has Parkinson’s

Posted: 04 Mar 2010 08:48 AM PST

Parkinson’s disease – a neurological disease that affects movement – is a disease for old people, right? That’s what many people used to think before actor Michael J. Fox revealed that he had been diagnosed with it at the age of 30, in 1991.

News that Fox had been diagnosed was stunning to many who had never considered that such a disease could strike young people. And yet, it does. And the latest to make the news is a 23-year-old rugby player from the United Kingdom.

According to this Mail Online article, Father becomes one of UK’s youngest Parkinson’s disease sufferers at 23, Shaun Slicker became the youngest person in the UK diagnosed with Parkinsons, but he had been experiencing symptoms of the disease since 2006.

The typical symptoms of Parkinsons include:

  • tremor in the hands, arms, legs and/or face
  • stiffness of the arms and legs
  • bradykinesia (slow movements)
  • difficulty maintaining balance or coordination

Because the symptoms can be so vague in the beginning, it’s easy not to consider a diagnosis of Parkinsons right away, particularly in young patients. In this case, Sean’s first noticeable symptoms was a tremor in his left leg. But, as he said in the article, that was easily attributed to something else. It was only as the other symptoms began to develop and become more pronounced (a limp and then tremors in the hand and arm) that he sought help. Unfortunately, it still took three years to be told he had Parkinson’s disease.

Sean currently takes daily injections of a medication called apomorphine, which seems to be helping with his symptoms.

Brittney Griner Takes Two Steps Back

Posted: 04 Mar 2010 07:05 AM PST

I’m a fan of Brittney Griner. I think she has the potential to single-handedly change the game of women’s basketball. But I’m not a fan of what she did last night.

During the second half of the game between Baylor and Texas Tech, Griner was fouled underneath the basket by Jordan Barncastle. It was a clean foul, as Barncastle was simply trying everything she could to keep Griner from getting position in the lane.

Yes, there was some “chippy-ness” involved, but that is what is expected when you play hard in the lane.

Griner, who is normally unusually composed when defenses swarm and harass her, came unglued. Something about Barncastle’s foul hit a nerve in the talented freshman. After the whistle was blown, Griner lunged at Barncastle, who was already walking away from the play, and swung a roundhouse right at her face. The punch knocked her backwards, and everyone stood back in awe.

Did that really just happen? Did the most talented freshman in all of women’s basketball just punch another player in the face?

Griner was understandably ejected from the game with 9:01 left to play, leaving Baylor coach Kim Mulkey incredibly stunned.

“It was ugly for women’s basketball,” she told ESPN. “It was ugly that coaches were on the court, that benches cleared, and I will take care of that with my team.”

There is no doubt in my mind that Mulkey will get to the bottom of Griner’s motives for taking a swing at another player. It was so uncharacteristic, so shocking that I’m positive there is something bubbling beneath the surface of Griner’s emotions. Maybe the freshman is beginning to succumb to the pressure and overwhelming responsibility of being in the spotlight after all.

Either way, she’s taken two huge steps back.

Here’s the video clip of the incident, courtesy of YouTube:

A Closer Look at ExerciseTV.TV

ExerciseTV.TV is a largely commercial website designed at getting you to buy exercise videos or memberships to online health workout plans or clubs.  They do have a few nice nuggets of free stuff though.  One of their experts created this video which contains a number of dynamic exercises you can do with dumbells.  You get the most out of your time because you’re working several muscle groups simultaneously.  (You can tell it’s challenging because the trainer is huffing and puffing soon after starting).

Another nice give away was a free 30 day weight loss plan in PDF form.  You can find this here.  If your browse around, you can find some decent freebies in terms of similar videos, workout plans, articles, and tips.  Check out the video referenced above:
